I found some model ranges that will work for Kingdoms of Men and now I'm having trouble where to start for building an army. What are some competitive builds for KoM? What are some play styles that men are good at? What units should I focus on? What point value should build towards for the average point value per game? So far from reading other posts and looking over the rulebook is that cannons are overall the best war engine, I should take crossbows for my missile troops because of the restrictions on shooting in and out of combat.

Knights are always a good bet if you're fielding humans.

MSUs (Troops) of shooters are good for harassing the enemy for a cheap cost.

Using Troop shooters with bows (can move and shoot) are good meat shields for your larger block infantry as you move them forward.

Cannons are excellent war machines. Also any warmachine with Indirect Fire (like Undead Balefires and I think Trebuchets) because they take no modifiers for range, cover, etc.

Are you using historicals? If you are, then you might try building a roughly historical list. Roman, samurai, and landsknechte (for example) armies are easy to build with the KoM list, and were all quite successful in their times.

Now showing The Fellowship of the Ring, along with some Dreadball Captains!

I'd start with knights and artillery, with some nice big blocks of pikemen to hold up the center (or far flank, if you favor a refused flank).

I prefer crossbows and handguns to bowmen, but each have their advantages.

The Kingdoms of men can be tricky, simply because they have such a wide range of options.

But, yeah - you can pick a historic archetype and build to go with it, without too much fear of crippling your army.

I am likely going with 17th Century Germanies, in part because I have an Empire WHFB army - but I picked Empire because I like the 30 Years War. (A classic 'oh my gods, why did they do that?! war.)

I picked fireforge crusade models for the vast majority of my army. I don't plan on making a historicaly accurate army. I just picked thay range becuase its cheaper than gw models and I like that period of europian armor and style of uniform.

I'm from the future. The future of space

Big hordes of spearmen get work done in Kings of War. They hold the line and dish out the dice. Fireforge's foot guys are probably good picks for them as well.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Very nice knight models choice.

Big units of pikemen are great, as you can churn out a metric ton of attacks. I'd highly recommend them with small units blocking for them to guarantee their charge after the small units get eaten.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Edit: realised i read the OP post wrong. Feel free to ignore my post.

Fireforge games have been recommended and the models are pretty good.

Vitrix and Warlord Games have some decent ancients that may do the job too.

These models look decent for the price too. Never had them in hand though.

Are musket models useable for KOM? If so this may be a decent deal.

You may also want to read the just-released Basilean list if you're wanting a GOOD-aligned human army.

Yup! Archer units (Missile Blocks) can upgrade to either crossbows for free (Can't move and shoot, gain Piercing (1) which is a bonus to-wound if you hit), or arquebuses/muskets for a nominal point cost (Can't move and shoot, and gain Piercing (2))

Imagine the feeling when you position your tanks, engines idling, landing gear deployed for a low profile, with firing solutions along a key bottleneck. Then some fether lands a dreadnought behind them in a giant heat shielded coke can.
