Kson tough to play.  They are far from top-tier.  They are hampered by so many things.  But, I was playing around with the sacred number and wondering if it might just be better to forget the whole thing.

I have a friend who is going to start playing them.  He is an awesome marine player.  And he wanted me to help him come up with a good 1500 point list, and it isn't an easy thing to do.  His 1500 point marine list fills out a force organization chart.  This army can fill a between half and a third.

So what if we make squads of five or six instead of nine?  Is this ok for the marines?  We get more sorceres, but fewer ablative wounds.  I personally think six per squad is the best option.  What about flamers?  9 may be overkill.  6 might be the better again.

We don't get +1 to summon or free AC's, but the army is a bit more flexible.

Sample1

9 rubrics in a rhino with Wind and thrall

9 rubrics on foot

5 rubric terminators

1 lord (terminator)

9 flamers

2 annihilators

Or

6 rubrics on foot x2

6 rubrics in the rhino

5 rubric terminators

terminator lord with 4 bare chosen terminators

9 flamers

1 annihilator

I just added a unit and a sorcerer for the loss of a tank.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

Well, you are right. The smaller the squad, the better off you are.

Thousand Sons are all about the AC. I can't think of any other army off the top of my head that is so dependant on them. And the smaller squad sizes lets you take more ACs. The other upside is more scoring units. Another advantage is more thrall wizards in a rhino. Of course smaller squad sizes let them get killed faster as well.

Where I really like the small squads is in the Rubric Terminator squads. They are so pricey and hard to kill, the lend themselves to smaller squads. Also screamer for some quick and cheap scoring units.

bad idea. thousand sons are already pricey, get as many free points as you can get.

list1:
2 annihilators? 1 for sure, but in 1500 pts i would drop the 2nd.

honestly I think the best way to win with 1ksons is to stick w/ ur bread and butter: rhino mounted wind of chaos, followed by a hail of bolter fire. then charge or get charged at some point to swing ur fist around.

rubric termies and chosen and flamers and all that other crap is kind of fun once and a while but always seems to weigh down the list w/ stuff that the tactical squads can do just as well if not better.

Sure.  When I'm feeling masochistic enought to pull out my Sons, I've often ran a squad with:

4 1k Sons
1 Asprining Champ
w/ Bolt of Change, 4 Thralls, and Warp Focus.

It's begging for some Rending/Starcannon torrent of fire, but being about to move then fire two S8 shots 25-30" actually makes you feel competant for a turn or two.
