So, my group has recently started BWG as a sort of diversion game. We get together for 40K every Saturday that the host is available (about 45 or so times a year). Lately, we've been getting in one or 2 games of BWG, in addition to the 40K. There are 5 of us, total.

Most recently, we tried a 4 player free-for all. Some issues came up; things we thought should be there, things that were too popular, some WTF moments, etc.

Since this is Necros' forum, I am hoping he'll answer any questions here. Opinions of casual readers are, of course, wanted and welcome... but Necros trumps.

In no particular order (as I recall them):

How many sticks of dynamite do you get when you buy dynamite for a model?
We had one guy play a 4 model crew (we can be a bit lax on rules LOL) on horseback and 2 of them had dynamite. They ran rampant with it; one stick hit (almost) my whole crew. Took down 2 henchmen and did a point to my Leader. Five of my 6 models were hit (I got some lucky rolls). Even though neither of his models managed to use the dynamite more than twice before being taken down, we could easily see how something like this could be damaging to games.

Why can I give a HUMAN Strength 6, but dynamite is only Strength 5?
I can have a model who can use a dueling sabre that is over 150% as damaging per hit (in theory, anyway) than a hit of dynamite. Seems odd.

Why is it that, after being hit with a stick of dynamite, a wooden western building suffers no ill effects?
We had a gang with 2 models in a building. A dynamite wielding loony threw a stick at them. Due to the hard cover, they laughed off the explosion. They didn't build their buildings too tough back then. Wouldn't it make sense to damage the building?

House Rule: A building hit by dynamite moves from hard to soft cover where hit. If it is hit again, it offers no cover from that direction. To make game play easier, a wall still blocks line of sight, even if it's been hit by dynamite twice
We figure that this will show the fragiliity in wooden buildings vs. dynamite.

Oh, God. We haven't played with any flaming weapons yet. Suggestion on house rules vs. wooden buildings?

Why did you not include rules for jumping or being thrown through windows? It happens all the time in Westerns.
Some of our building have back doors. Some don't. We arranged the town to be pleasing to the eye. So, not all of us ended up able to slide into buildings via the back door. We had to run around front and expose ourselves to fire, if we wanted to get into a building. There were, however, windows in the walls that could have been jumped through.

House Rule: Jumping through windows.
We aren't sure how to run this one yet, but we're contemplating an "auto hit" for d3 S3 or S4 hits, to reflect the slam into the floor/ground and the shards of glass. Thoughts?

Army Builder Inquiry: It shows that Wilt Clancy has a DF of 5. Why is this? Also, DF shows when building the army, but not on the print outs or PDFs. Do you know why? This would be a huge help.

That's all I have at the moment.

Also, for the record, others are welcome to use this thread as a generic "rules query" thread or to inquire about or suggest house rules for anything.

Eric

...and Horses.
Horses are large, sturdy animals. One shot kills them, though?
Unless we overlooked something, all horses seem to have 1 HP. Odd, when a mule is as tough as a warhorse.

There's no ammo limit, so you can throw as much dynamite as you want You can also have unlimited bottles of booze to throw too. I left ammo out of the game to keep it more streamlined. Maybe we could put a limit on them though.. you can have 20 sticks of dynamite, but each one will cost XP? Or, have a "quantity" rule for larger thrown items? I guess if someone was throwing a spear, they wouldn't have 10 of them strapped to their back.

For the strength, it just worked out that way.. and I wanted Melee combat to be more deadly so the game doesn't end up being a bunch of guys in buildings shooting out windows and standing around bored. Maybe you could imagine it as someone sees a stick of dynamite sailing through the air, so they hit the deck and don't get hit with the face with the explosion. I have considered having the max str for humans be 4 though, or 5 for bounty hunters since that's their free attribute.. but it seemed weird having just 1 stat max at 4 when everything else goes to 6.

I didn't add destructible terrain again for streamlining. I thought about having that as an advanced rule though. Or making blasts ignore cover. In fact I meant to make them ignore cover, but I forgot to add it to the book I just don't want to be fast & fun, not get into something like "Well that wall has an armor value of 6 so the dynamite can't hurt it, but it can hurt this other wall that has a 3, so hold on a minute or 5 while I take apart this building..." .. I could make it where it will blow up an obstacle, but what if that obstacle is a giant boulder?

One thing I'm doing with the adventure game is if you're in a cave or mine and use dynamite there's a good chance you'll cause a cave in that will do extra damage to everyone.

Not sure about the army builder thing, the files are pretty incomplete :( The guy making them never finished them. So the DP of 5 is probably a type-o. It works good for building characters from scratch though.

There are rules for jumping, like from rooftop to rooftop, and falling if you don't jump far enough. Climbing or diving through a window would be like moving over an obstacle, -1 " to your movement.

Horses are really just there to give you extra movement and a special trample attack. If one gets shot, it might not die but I figured it would be pretty spooked and want to run away and/or throw the rider too. In fact I was going to add a throwing the rider rule if the horse get's shot. Just thinking about how every movie I've seen, when a horse gets shot it drops like a rock. So that's kind of what I was going for.

Good info. Thanks for the responses. That helps make a lot of sense of things.

I'll post more as I think of or come across them.

I'm just going to throw this out there as a FWIW... It's been my experience that horses really are not that "tough." They are actually quite fragile in the sense that they require a LOT of maintenance and care to keep them functional as a mount. Now, I have never shot a horse so I cannot say this with certainty, but it's been my experience that an injured / wounded horse would not be of any value as a mount.

Yeah that's kind of what I was going for with the horse stats I mostly just added them just so people with mounted figures can use them. The majority of BWG figs will be on foot, but I've been thinking about doing alt sculpts of each gang leader on a horse, some day.

And we'll need the horse stats too when we get around to bigger models like carts and stagecoaches .. so you can shoot out the horses and rob the coach the easy way.

In my youth, I worked with ponies. Oddly, my experiences were different.
Now, I realize they are hosed if they have a leg/ankle issue. They were overall, though, always pretty sturdy.

Regardless, like Necros said, it's a game. It should not be presumed to accurately reflect reality all the time.

According to my girlfriend, who has a degree in Animal Science with an emphasis on equine (and is thinking of pursuing a masters in equine physiology), a horse that has been shot would be fine as a mount except for a few cases.

Shot in the leg, it is done for.
Shot behind the shoulder, it is done for (heart and such right there).
Neck if it hits a vertebra, it would be done for, if not, probably would be fine.

Now how it would react to being shot, that is relative to the training it has received.

How about each level of horse will get +1 HP, so Mules = 1 HP, Small horse = 2 HP, Large Horse = 3 HP and War Horse = 4 HP

But, if a horse loses 1 HP he has to make an Int roll with a 5+ (or should it be 6+?) and if you fail they get spooked and run off, and throw the rider. The rider will take damage same as falling, if the horse moved more than 3" in it's last activation (instead of falling down 3")?

That sounds about right. Also opens up a skill where they get a bonus on their Int roll or something.

Like cavalry riders (and horses) are going to be less likely to spook than a horse that a small time thug is riding.

I like it, except that i'd make the mule and small horse 1, then drop the rest by 1.
I like the Int check, too.

Funny thing... my friend's horses were smarter than one of his henchmen. LOL
