I have a question. I think we figgured it out, but I want additional input.

A unit of mandrakes gets assaulted while they are in rough terrain. The rule for mandrakes is that they are considered to have a cover save EVEN in Hand to Hand, or out in the open, etc...

If in cover, they get a 3+ cover save.

Does this mean a 3+ cover in hand to hand as well, as the rules state they get the cover save in hth?  Or do they get the 5+ cover save, as normaly NO cover saves are allowed in Hand to Hand for any reason?

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Oh, by the way, we played it as a 5+ save, as the +2 cover bonus would not apply because you normaly get no cover save in hand to hand....

But there was enough doubt for me to ask...

No, I don't believe you get the cover save in hand to hand:

"Mandrakes always count as being in cover, giving them a 5+ save against most attacks."  Then "This counts in an assault as well, so unless the attackers are armed with frag..."

The problem is sentence structure.  The first says that Mandrakes always count as being in cover.  Fine and dandy.

The second sentence is specifically addressing the mandrakes being assaulted in cover, indicating that since they 'count as in cover' all the time, they attack at I10.

Cover never gives you a 'save' in close combat anyway, so you ultimately played it correctly.  They have a 5+ save versus hand to hand, and weapons that ignore cover.  And a cover save versus shooting, even in the open.

I hope that made sense :-)
