Beyond the Beltway

So, I'm starting this thread here at somebody's suggestion (Ruglud's, if you must know). First up is an oldie but a goodie, a couple of storage tanks that I scratch built some time ago. The style is something most of you have seen before. You'll have to trust me when I say that the terrain I post will move rapidly outside of your Zone of Familiarity. Some of you may have seen these pieces before, on the WH40k tables at the NOVA Open tournament in 2010 or 2011 perhaps?

One storage tank started life as a coffee can, the other as bottle of saline solution for contact lenses. Everything else is paper, except the railings (q-tip shafts) and the ladder (balsa wood)... Oh, and the rivets are sewing pins. Don't stick you hand inside the terrrain please.

Thanks for stopping by.

So here are some more photos. I think this design should look familiar to many. Just a simple bunker, with a detachable roof for interior access.

The top view.

I may have a few more photos of other bunkers to post. Let me know when you're bored of them. I have much cooler stuff to come Or click the Infinity graphic in my sig if you want a sneak peek. Don't worry, it's to another thread here on Dakka. I'm not rick-rolling anyone...yet

Thanks for stopping by.

Hey Red Harvest, great to see you starting a thread here

Really cool terrain pieces, the bunker reminds my of the ones they used to show in 2nd / 3rd Edition. Subbed!

That's exactly where the idea originated, OneManNoodles. 2nd edition. Good catch. And these are from the 3rd edition...I'm almost positive. Lousy edition though. Perhaps 4th. Anyway, this is the last of the gray stuff.

I found that 'not gray' terrain was more interesting to make.

I think the Alien storage tank started as an oatmeal container, but it's been so long since I made it, I don't recall. Everything else is paper, foamcore on the landing pad (from an idea on the old GW website, back when it was, y'know, interesting.) and the ruins were white sytrofoam, and then clad in paper. The one common ingredient would be wood glue (aliphatic resin) instead of PVA glue -- except for the bases.

I think I'll try photographing some of the Fantasy terrain I made too. But this is enough pix for one post.

So, to sub a thread you simply need to post a comment in it? I'll be hunting a few of you guys down soon enought then, so watch your six I already found Cam's land rover.

And remember, click the Infinity banner below to go to the Infinity terrain. Although I'll start posting WIPs of that here soon enough, and maybe just a few finished pix there.

Great stuff, loving the old school stuff, and the thick walls. And I totally agree, grey is very boring after a while.

Also most of us have our threads in our sig's at least our main ones. I have 2 main ones, you could spend some serious time catching up on us all, but I think it was worth it when I did it. Give yourself about a year for Vik's thread, but it is full of wonderful gems.

If you do not want to subscribe just by posting, you can go in your profile and untick the box for it. Then you have to use Rugluds method to sub, but it means you can then comment without subbing.

Thank you for posting these pic's, very inspirational.

I see the little subscribe thing now. Thanks. And thanks for rolling out the welcome mat guys. Much appreciated. Now this gallery voting thing... I've voted about 20 times, but my info only lists 3. I think it's a browser setting on my part. Grrr. Ah well. Learning new things is healthy.

Anyway, the terrain thus shown goes way back to 2nd ed. days, except for the desert stuff. That's from 2007. So,I build to last apparently. Good terrain should last 20 years

Anyway these Obelisks...

...date from the same time as the previous terrain. But since I am working on a desert board these days, I'v started to modify them. You can see one set has hexagonal bases now. I used that hologram ribbon (?name?) and it produced a nice effect. I thought so anyway. Had LEDs been readily availabe to me back them, I would have lit the 'gemstones' on them. But the obelisks inspired this for the table I'm slowly building these days...

At last, LEDs Fiat Lux!

I painted these for a Terrain painting contest (took 2nd place.) to resemble red marble. I think I ended up with more of a granite look, but I like it. To complete the look I should add a few more layers of polyurethane to it, and then wet sand it smooth. Just worried about sanding through to the paint or paper. That would be a mess.

Sadly, I need to work on the photo skills still. Yes, Lighting, lighting, lighting. I know. I'll get it.

Thanks for stopping by.

Amazing tour, and yes, I fully agree on the other-than-grey colour choices for the builds!

And curved walls with spiralling stairs, I can't praise those high enough!

Excelente!

I've managed to get quite decent at the spirals and curves...and in proper scale too

The exterior shots of the building are in the Infinity thread. (link in the sig) Not sure where I put the photos of the finished stairs... oh, never mind. I only primed them. Never could decide how to do the interior of the building beyond movable walls, and a plexiglas floor... for playability of course. Have to build a few more of the really big buildings soon. Man, they take serious time though.

After a few decades, straight lines and right angles began to bore me. Espero que me entienda. So I look at what Gaudi, and Gehry, among others, did, and draw inspiration.

(OT: Why do you use English-UK spellling? I thought Argentines learned US English.)

I love LEDs in models, put some in my up-armoured Rhino and Predator (still need to finish those models...)

So majority of your stuff is built from card right and laminated for strength? You should check out silveroxide, he's a crazy papercraft builder of the highest level

I didn't know that you could auto subscribe just by posting... That's a handy little feature...

Just had a quick peek. Yeah, Silver Oxide's stuff is good. I'll be checking out more of that. Thanks for the heads up.

Makes me regret that I never gave decent paint jobs to all the vehicles I built back in the day-- Leman Russes, Sentinels, Land Raiders etc, and even a Baneblade from plans in an old White Dwarf-- Rogue Trader era White Dwarf. Anything to avoid giving $$$ to Nottingham. Plus, The ones you build yourself do better on the table. The Dice Gods always favor the scratch builder. True.

I want to build a cool dropship at some point too. Perhaps something inspired by the UD-4L from Aliens, or something from Elysium, or based on the Sea Stallion (US navy helicopter). It would need to be big, 20" long big, though, to be in good scale. I have little interest in distorted scale and proportion these days.

Yeah, we used to stack dice to make little platforms for the meeples, but in Infinity we use a d20, which is not so stackable as the d6. So the "Temporary terrain element" came to be .

And now for something completely different (just to spam up my post count. Lol.) a Fantasy building. It was supposed to be an Inn. I used a few Mordheim bits on it, and plastic from clamshell packaging for the windows. The gargoyles on the roof...that is the second set. They kept getting knocked off. Everthing else is paper.

And a shot of the interior.

There will be more Thanks for stopping by.

Great stuff, love the stairs. Great way of making them to scale and usable.

I could see that building on many a battlefield, apart from maybe infinity.

Keep it coming.

Actually the fantasy Inn works just fine for Infinity. You have a themed board for a 'Rendez-Vous at the Renaissance Faire' scenario. As you can see.

I'll post a few more of the Fantasy building photos. Just have to get around to uploading everything.

Thanks Doc. It's just corrugated cardboard, but neatly cut up and hardened with a pva glue wash. I see alot of the stuff used, but people don't really do much to make it look well, better.

A few more Fantasy buildings. The farmhouse is inspired by the cardstock Brettonian farmhouse that came in the 5th(?) edition box - Brettonians v. Lizardmen. The tower is a coffee can. I do raid my recycling bin for a lot of building materials. I'm "eco-friendly" or maybe just, erm, thrifty, yeah, thrifty.

Thanks for stopping by.

I like the fantasy buildings, but the spiral stairs keep knocking me over!

I'd surely like to have a glimpse at your old vehicles, if you still have them around, too.

(OT: I studied at a British-English school, and I'd say those were the rule more than the exception in bilingual ed, at least in my time. Of course, that was so long ago, I'm not sure US-English did even exist back then !. The cubs are attending school now, and it is also UK-English, with Cambridge oriented IE formation. Old habits just die hard, I'd guess)

Beyond the Beltway

Well, I learned Castellano from Colombians and actual Castilians, so my Spanish isn't quite Central American-- which is what we normally hear in the US, obviously. Leads to some amusing situations.

My old vehicles, as in haven't touched anything in 7-8 years or more, tail end of 4th ed. Most are even older. They were in a sterilite container, those that survived the periodic purges anyway.

I was always more interested in buildings, so I never finished painting or even building most of the stuff.

A few of the bits, and tracks on the tanks but not the landraiders, are from the GW kits, everything else is from scratch.
These drop pod blanks I can re-use though. They can become Infinity terrain.

Thunderbolts...sigh. Found out they weren't exactly the right dimensions. Kind of took the desire to finish them. The one fuselage w/out wings etc is the right size, but I quit playing before I did more work on it.

And of course this

to replace the one I built from White Dwarf plans. The original did not survive the ages, and a few moves, among other things. I can modify this one to be some sort of heavy industry vehicle for say terraforming and use it as Infinity terrain.

I still scratchbuild Just not vehicles. And why do I always read Omnissiah as Omnius? (oh yeah. Never mind.) Now, any ideas for transforming them into useful terrain for a certain skirmish game? The tanks and sentinels are write-off, but the rhino blanks, drop pods, and the baneblade have potential for conversion.

Anyway, a few fantasy building shots, since I have them, and have an injury that prevents me from doing any building. (Cleaning a mini. A blade slip. It happens. but right at the fingertip. bleah, so I'm out of commission while it heals. Should be a few days. Typing is a joy right now too.)

For some reason, I really enjoyed building this stuff. The base sections are from Celestial Seasons tea boxes. The actual wood bits are from a paint stirrer. Everything else is paper. These buildings, heck, all of the buildings shown so far-- minus the vehicles and the Infinity Obelisks, was on the tournament tables at the NOVA Open in 2010 and 2011. Took a bit of damage in 2011 too, like the movers transported everything in the back of a cement mixer or something. So, everything stayed at home in subsequent years. Still, there is a certain sense of pride in knowing that my stuff made it to the big leagues.

Thanks for stopping by (I've been using that phrase for ages. Seems many folks around here use it to. Hmmm, great minds and all that?)

Your work is pretty amazing and very cool. I will say your painting is incredibly crisp. Refreshing to see in these days of "Make it rusty! with a side of Mud."

As to Rhino's, always thought to make some without tracks, kind of like stack-able shipping containers. And why not repurpose the sentinals to industrial lifters (ala Alien.) Been done before I know, but you could paint them JCB yellow with lots of hazard stripes. Put on a set of forks or grabbers instead of guns. They could be stood around cargo yards.

Thanks guys.

Well Magos, it has been a while since I built any vehicle. But I'll build some soon enough. I could use some cars and buses and delivery vehicles etc, as scatter. There are plenty of folks who use toys and die cast stuff, but it looks, meh.

Hmm, good ideas Cam. Those Sentinels are huge too, scale-wise, so they have potential, definitely heavy industry. I thought the Rhinos could get really big wheels-- Aliens APC style-- and a few other conversions. Thing is, I would want some them to come out Civilian and Industrial or something like that.

The painting is how it was done c.1998-2002 or thereabouts (5th ed.). And to take advantage of the post, a few pix of a bridge I did.

and with a river section.

Thanks for stopping by.
