This is my first batrep so I hope you enjoy it.

700pts of Marines VS Tau, using all our new buildings and working out how best to use them in a game.

5 Pathfinders - Bonding knife, Shas'ui, Ion Rifle, recon drone
5 Pathfinders - Bonding knife, Shas'ui, 2 x Rail Rifles, Pulse Accel drone

Drone Squadron - 4 x gun drones

We are using the famous planet of Dining Room Table and it's capital city 'Why can't you roll those dice quietly, I am watching Eastenders says the wife' (!)

Table layout -

Spoiler:

Rules for the buildings -

Do not count as ruins (no difficult test except climbing up to second floors
4 + Save
LOS can travel through several windows across table
Marines, Scouts, Firewarriors etc can move through windows, larger units, Stealthsuits or Terms etc have to go around as there are no doors.

Marines roll to go first, traits where useless and I don't remember them!
I deployed with the worry he would steal the initiative, it has happened before!

Deployment -

Spoiler:

Scouts in a high risk position looking for the first blood

Tau went for a typical Xenos coward 'all hide in a big line' approach

Turn One Marines.

Spoiler:

I pushed my Tacticals and Captain forward and brought the Terminators up behind them, my storm moved forward to try to get to the far left building and get into a position to deposit it's shotgun wielding maniacs in turn 2.
Shooting was fairly bland, my heavy bolter snapshots hit nothing and my bolters where just out of range, leaving everything riding on the bolter scout squad. Taking aim at the Pathfinder squad hidden away up high to their left they let fly with 8 shots and 3 from the heavy bolter. 7 hits with the bolters while the heavy bolter sprayed wildly hitting absolutely nothing. 6 wounds forced the cover save and after the dice where thrown 3 Pathfinders laid dead.

They of course passed their morale test and I realised looking at the sheer weight of Pulse weapons staring back at me that my get first blood plan had not gone entirely to plan...

Turn 1 Tau

Spoiler:

The Tau's only movement was the squad of 12 Firewarriors with the Fireblade moving forward to get a better view of the scouts hidden in the flimsy buildiing ahead.
Shooting began and somewhat of a shock came the immediate painting of my Landspeeder with 5 markerlights.
Rail rifles and an Ion Rifle fired ignoring the cover and managed to penetrate taking off a HP and resulting in a shaken crew.
Unfortunately there where still plenty enough marks for the small firewarrior team to ignore cover and glance it to death.

The large squad in the middle opened up with 26 Pulse Rifle shots massacring the Scout squad and giving Tau first blood.

Remember how there used to be 5 brave initiates here....

Marines turn 2

Spoiler:

Pushing forward more and planting my surviving shotgun scouts firmly behind a wall my shooting was again fairly weak. The Terminators assault cannon missed all its snap shots and their storm bolter where millimetres out of range.

The combined might of my Tactical squad however did manage to get rid of the last two Pathfinders hidden off the the left.

Tau Turn 2

Spoiler:

The Tau began by moving their drone squad out over the crashed ship giving them clear LOS of my tactical squad.

Marklights igniting them the poor BS of the drones became less of a worry and 3 marines fell to their shooting. However worse was yet to come, 39 Pulse shots from the Fireblades squad came flying in taking them down to just 4 men and wiping 2 wounds off my Captain

Marines Turn 3

Spoiler:

Moving my Terminators into some mild cover behind a tank trap was how I started the turn and then after much faffing I decided to win I needed a linebreaker and to wipe out another unit. My Scouts began what can only be described as a 'Mad Dash' through the building with a view to getting close to the Firewarriors camped ahead. My Captain seeing the coming iceberg broke away from the Tactical squad leaving them to it and began to move over to get in behind the Scouts.

For shooting I managed to take out two of the Firewarriors ahead of the scouts, softening them for what was to come and wiped out the drone Squad, it did however take all my Terminator and Tacticals shots to get them killed.

Tau Turn 3

Spoiler:

Tau's worst turn this one, despite their overwhelming numbers advantage they managed to take out just one Terminator and one Shotgun scout.

It was so boring in fact I took no photos!

Marine Turn 4

Spoiler:

Movement didn't happen, I needed to hold the line and not get any closer to those guns.

My Terminators finally managed to hurt some of the second Pathfinder team, forcing a morale test they passed.

My Shotgun scouts took out two more of the Firewarriors and moved into assault, taking all but one for one loss and forcing them to run.

Tau Turn 4

Spoiler:

At this point the score stood at Marines 2 Tau 3.

The Tau however concentrated everything on my Captain and Tactical marines, leaving just one Tactical marine and landing a full 18 wounds on my Captain. The Captain fell and my Tactical Marine began running.

And at that point it was game over.

Result -

Spoiler:

Marines 4 Tau 5.

I managed to steal linebreaker and break his Pathfinders but he took out my warlord, took first blood and wiped out two squads.

If we had played another turn I don't think I would have had a unit on the table to be honest!

All in all a good game, I wish I had taken a Missile launcher instead of the Heavy Bolter and a Cyclone on the Terminators, some Frag missiles on that tightly packed Fireblade and his squad might have turned the game, but you live and learn.

Hope you enjoyed this, we play weekly the Tau army is quickly growing to match my 1500 points so expect bigger battles!

Fun little report. Just a comment on the Terminators; you seemed to be worrying about giving them cover, but I don't know if the Tau could actually get through their armour. I'd have reversed the positions, with the Terminators going in front of the Tacticals. That way you get to soak shots on your 2+ armour save.

Unfortunately it seems like you were forced into playing the Tau at their own game - they wanted to trade shots at mid range, with that kind of list.

I was worried about getting the termies into rapid fire range of his two rail rifles (AP1) so kept them behind cover, the 6+ on the tank trap saved them twice!!

Really I should have dropped my scouts up front with a becon and deep struck them. But you live and learn. Will play again next week and try with a second tac team and rhino in lieu of.l terminatiors

Automatically Appended Next Post:
My big loss was the storm though. Had I got it another 12" and ipened up with the heavy flamer I could have made a real dent and then got the scouts moving into assault a lot sooner.

6+? Why not take the 5++ from the armor? I would rather risk Termies against Rail rifles than standard marines since the Termies will still get their invul.
