I'm interested in the ring, is it just a random magical artifact with no further explanation? Could something similar exist? Also, how did the Eternal Life thing work?

Do you mean Vlad's ring? The one which kept on bringing him back to life? If so, then honestly there isn't a whole bunch of fluff on it, but that is purposeful as GW has obviously tried to make it mysterious. From the fluff we do know, is that Vlad did not make it. That it is similar in design to rings made by Nagash, but it looks a bit like a copy, probably not the original. We know it allows the bearer to come back from certain death, we don't know how, as even when his body was evaporated by a cannon ball he still came back, so the body may not be necessary. We know that after it was nicked Vlad died and stayed dead, and that Manfred either has it or is looking for it.

Thats about all we know, and that is mainly from the old VC book, haven't read the newer one.

Yep, thats the one. I suppose then that a ring with similar properties could possibly exist, without anyone really knowing of it? I want something for my VC army fluff that explains why he dies in battle yet still lives, a ring or similar item would do the trick.

Possible, but you are playing Vampire Counts, the Lords of Undeath. You could equally explain it by simply having a very loyal and powerful Necromancer at your Beck and Call.

The problem with that is this Tribe of vampires distrusts and dislikes all things living, including Necromancers. While they will use them as a means to an end, they wouldn't trust one with their lords life.

FFG in Nights Dark Masters had the C ring as a gift from Nagash to control the vampires........

Spoiler:
He was resurrected in the short story "Charnel Congress" by Josh Reynolds that's part of the Gotrek and Felix anthology. He didn't come back completely, in fact he came back as a Varguhlf, as the resurrection process was botched. Gotrek and Felix, along with an assist from Mannfred Von Carstein, put an end to him again, before Manfred turned on them and was driven off again.
