Greetings,

I have been a long time enthusiast of Sword and Sandal/Peplum flicks, and Gladiator movies in particular. There is nothing quite like watching a mid-60's flick of oily, sweaty beefcake Italians westling around in short shorts to get the heart stirred... or maybe that's just me. In addition, I have done some research into the real world of Gladiators. I am also an avid wargamer and really like 28mm skirmish rules. These two loves seemed to logically combine into a desire, nay NEED; to start a Gladiator Ludus or two of my own.

I'm not entirely new to the Gladiator wargaming scene. I have dabbled in the past with Familia Gladiatoria, Mino Sin Missio (sp), and a few others. However, for this project I am going to be using The Games: Blood and Spectacle as my base rule set. These rules can be found here: http://www.wargamevault.com/product/210557/The-Games-Blood-and-Spectacles

I like these rules as they balance some tactical play with a campaign system, and they have a lot of different Gladiator fight types and not just straight up Mano-a-mano clashes. Plus, I wrote them myself so that limits rule disputes. However, Gladiators don't rely on a single ruleset to work. A murmillo is a murmillo no matter what ruleset you are using! The other great thing is that you don't need a ton of Gladiator models for a good night of gaming. A handful will suffice.

Now, onto the Gladiators. For this project I decided to use some of Crusader's beautiful 28mm models. I ordered from their US Distributor Age of Glory. Here is what I started with....

You can see a nice big piece of MDF that use to be a Cake board, a few Roman Pillars for cake decorating, a box of washers for bases and some miniatures. So far I have recieved:

1. Gladiator Characters- really I only wanted the Gladiator with the two-handed axe, but the others might be useful too.
2. Equites- This pack has them mounted and dismounted. Cool since Equites typically both dismounted when one ro the other was dismounted.
3. Thraeces and Hoplomachi- Curved Sword and Spear armed type respectively.
4. Secutores and Scissori- The Secutor is the traditional for of the Retarious (Net and Trident) and the Scissori is also known as a Arbelas. They have a stranged curved blade arm thing.
5. Retarius and Laquerius- Net and Trident and Spear and Lasso armed light gladiator types.

Here is a closer look at the two groups I plan on working on first, the Secutors and Retarius packs. You can also see the Arbelas and Laquerius in this picture. Since Secutors and Retarius are a "classic" gladiator match up they seem like painting up one of each is a good start.

Here are these guys to scale with the arena I plan on using.

Obviously this is just the beginning stages of the project. Much will need to be done, but here is the start.

I was planning on taking a pizza dish and flocking it with sand coloured flock, but a cake disc doesn't have a lip. Good idea.

I just received my blister of Velites and Provacatuers and Dimachareus. I haven't even had time to take pictures yet. So, I ripped one off the internet instead....

Oddly enough, they sent me a blister labelled Murmillos but it was full of Hoplomachii and Thraex. A quick Email to Age of Glory and they are getting it sorted out. I felt bad for Age of Glory because it was clear that Crusader mislabelled the blister from the start and I don't expect the packing guy to have an intimate knowledge of Gladiator types when fulfilling an order.

just got my final box of Murmillos from Age of Glory. Again, I haven't had time to take any new pictures, so here is an image ripped from the internet....

Hopefully I can now spend some time painting this weekend. I'm hoping to paint up a Retarius and Secutor for a demo game to show you guys.

However, I'm not done buying stuff yet. Next I think I will need two Gladiator Chariots and a few animals. For the Chariots I am thinking Old Glory Gladiator Wars line. However, I am unsure about Old Glory since they are very hit-and-miss with their sculpts. Has anyone seen them in the metal before?

I got some time to base a few more guys and clean up the flash. This is probably about 70% of the Gladiator models that I have.

This Dimachaerus is a good example of the detail these Crusader models have. I'm pretty sure my meager painting skills will not do them justice.

They look like they'd take a base coat, wash and touch up approach really well.

I am very impressed with your ruleset. I read through it twice and other than some minor spelling and grammar issues I think you've really got something good here. I am going to build my own arena and play test this out.
Pm me if you're interested in some other ideas.
Great job,

Cool. I'm glad you liked it.

I hope I only had as many typos as your average Forgeworld product.

Here is my first Arbelas Gladiator that I finally painted. I plan on basing all my Gladiators and the Arena in some play sand. I also learned that almost all of my paints have dried out.

Anyway, on to the Gladiator....

I got painting time early this year! I painted a few more Gladiators.

Bad picture, but you get the idea. From left to right....

Gaulus- Heavy armor, big axe, similar to a Murmillo without the sword and scutum. The term Gaulus may refer to a Gladiator from Gaul and not an actual distincitve style of arena fighter.

Retarius- Trident and net, a Hollywood favorite, as well as a Roman favorite.

Hoplomacchus- Spear, small shield, and dagger to possibly represent a greek Phalangite. Not very popular in the Eastern half of the Empire.

Velite- Javelins, dagger. A very light skirmishing Gladiator typically used in Venatorii.... beast hunts.

Laquerious- Similar to a Retarius only wielding a spear and lasso. Often fought against Arbelas and Secutores.

Dimachaereus- A dual sword wielding type. There is some dispute if this a real historical style or just a refernce to Gladiators who were ambi-dexterous. However, their is a single relief carving that seems to indicate a Gladiator wielding two weapons, a sword and some sort of curved dagger. This is also the style of Spartacus in his role as the Bringer of Rain from Blood and Sand.

This is a cool project. I once started gladiators using Pegasus' 1/72 plastic gladiators, but I was unimpressed with the figures and gave them to a friend. Gladiators need to have personality and I think the figures you chose are much better than 1/72 plastics.

Hey guys,

I want to paint up a few of my Gladiators as Numidians or North Africans, but I am unsure how to go about getting the right flesh tone. I pretty much just have the basics of Army Painter colors so would love to hear some recipes for getting the right tone.

Thanks.

I haven't used the army painter colours, but a leather colour highlighted with a darker tanned flesh might work well. Shade colour would be a medium brown.

Okay, I took a shot at some Numidians and Nubians. Not the best pics as they needed a flash as it was winter and the middle of the night.

The guy on the left with the trident was clearly intended to be of North African/African decent. The other two I just decided to paint that way. They are a Secutor and a Murmillo. However, I haven't painted the shields for them yet.

Really nice minis! I'm about paint an African Retiarius as well, any tips?! Although I see you used Army Painter whereas I'll be using GW...

That Scissores Gladiator further up is REALLY nice, been looking for a model for one for ages as Scissores are probably my favourite Gladiators.

Yet to read your rules yet but this while project looks great and is definitely and inspiration for me! I noticed a Gallus (we'll have to agree to disagree on spelling of that name...) with a mighty axe who looks very cool, i may have to pick one up. Where is he from? That chariot is also looking good: I really want to add some cav based Gladiators to my repertoire, might be able to persuade the client!

Thanks. The models are from Crusader. The Murmillos are especially detailed with little Hoplites on the Greave, Rosettes on the helmet, and laces up the back of his Manica. As I started to paint him I realized that he was no mook, but a champion of the arena.

The Scissori is also Crusader and they call him an Arbelas. I doubt even the Romans got so hung up on the categorization of Gladiators as we do today. They just wanted a good fight.

I recall reading that there were actually fan "factions" divided on large shield vs. small shield. I guess that leaves the poor Laquerius and Retarius right out then. Oh well, at least they were the ones most popular with the ladies.

HaHaHa! Probably very true! Might have to steal that quote...

Will have to check out Crusader as they look and sound pretty good. Lots of dynamic sculpts as well. I think the thing that put me off them originally was the fact that I needed a lot of diversity in types for a little price, which Wargames Foundry did very well. Now I have the basis of the models though I may expand and get the models I like the look of!

Interesting about the shield 'factions'. The only real 'rivalries' I thought of were between training schools, but of course there must have been differences within the different schools. Mmm, will see what I can dig up from the long lost archives the interwebs... The Ret. and Laq. probably had factions between long and short hafted weapons... no euphemism here don't worry...

We who are painted salute you!

From left to right....

Samnite- This one came packaged as a Murmillo, however I tend to think of him as a Samnite. Why? Murmillos have two greaves and a Manica where this model clearly has no Manica and only a single greave. Therefore, he is armed more like a Samnite style. This type fell out of favor and many believe evolved into the Secutore with the rise in popularity of the Retarius and integration of the Samnites into the Roman Republic.

Thraex- The famous adversary of the Murmillo type armed with the curved sword of Thrace and a small, buckler style shield. Many believe that Spartacus may have been this type of Gladiator as he is often referred to as a Thracian. However, it could be he actually hailed from Thrace.

Provacatuer- The only type of Gladiator to wear a breastplate. Typically, they only fought other Provocatuers. Some believe this was to represent the Roman on Roman combat of the Civil Wars.

Secutore- The famous rival of the Retarius. The helmet is designed without a crest to help avoid getting tangled in the Retarius' net. The Secutore represented endurance and strength while the Retarius represented speed and finesse.

No shields or basing yet, as I am saving those for late.

Okay, the last two Gladiator models before I move onto shields and bases.

A Murmillo and a Velite.

Murmillos were the staple heavy Gladiator of the Romans and were a fan favorite. Murmillo is some derivative of the term fish, perhaps because of the large crest they typically wore on their helmets. However, the exact meaning/nature of the name is unclear.

Velites were lightly equipped Gladiators who used javelins in the arena. Frequently, they were used in the Venatorii (beast hunts) as opposed to fighting other Gladiators.

Next up, I want to do shields and such and then move onto my Equites and Essadarius (Chariots). However, I have never really painted horses before, so I am open to any suggestions or tutorials that you guys recommend.

Okay, to get us going my friend and I set-up a pair of rival Gladiator Ludi with the models I have now. Sure, they all still need to be based and their shields finished, but at least they have paint on them!

House Quintillus
Spain had served as the home base of Lucius Varro Quintillus. However, on a spur of the moment decision he decided to leave Spain to the fertile lands of North Africa and Luptis Minor. The shady Lanista decided to take his troupe on the road. The exact reasons why are uncertain. Many of the well-bred and low born speculate wildly that it had something to do with an illicit affair, gambling debts, or running a foul of a political rival. No matter the case, he has brought his Troupe south to test his troupe's mettle against the Gladiator's of Luptis Minor. The majority of his Gladiators were purchased fromt eh sturdy Barbarian stock or from prisoners taken on the battlefields. Therefore, they were also fearsome and deadly men.

The Murmillo Jugartha leads the pack of able Gladiator Warriors

In this group, my opponent and I decided to put the best Gladiators with the most popular/expensive types together to see how they fared. The exception is the Gaullus, but hey we had to fit the points. From left to right we have:
Longinuis the Prisoner-of-War Hoplomacchus
Lucius the Desserter Provacatuer
Priapus the Barbarian Retarius
Jugartha the Prisoner-of-War Murmillo
Marcomanni the Barbarian Gaullus
Arminius the Prisoner-of-war Velite

House of Luptis Minor
The local Gladiator's of Luptis Minor hailed from a small school that had supported the ampitheatre in the region since its inception. Therefore, the members of the school were much more provincial. The Lanista, Titus Pulio Metallus; had inherited the Ludus from his father and the Metallus line had managed it for many decades. The arrival of House Quintillus offered rich potential gain, and also potential risk. For the House of Luptis Minor had mostly featured against other provincial North Africa Ludi. The gladiators of House Quintillus were a different breed all together. However, Metallus was a pragmatic businessman and he figured he could outlast the troupe of Quintillus over the course of the Gladiator season.

The slave ranks of House Luptis Minor

These are my guys, and I don't even remember their names! Huh, I guess that makes me a true Lanista! As opposed to House Quintillus, everyone of them is simply a Slave. Therefore, they are not going to be nearly as fearsome starting out. I have a feeling they will lose and get killed a lot. However, my plan is to replace them cheaply and easily as needed. I am curious to see how this balances out with my opponent's Ludus in the campaign.

From left to right:
Minoris- Murmillo
Moderatus- Thraex
Plano - Retarius
Alexander the Elder- Laquerius
Regulus- Dimachaerus
Ordinarri- Secutor
Mediocrates- Samnite
Averginonix- Secutor
Lupis the Lupine- Velite

We are setting up a time to fight our first Games. Exciting times!

On a side note, does anyone know a good place to get some 28mm exotic animals? I need wolves, lions, ostriches, etc.

I got the shields painted and the bases added to the Gladiators I have painted so far.

There is enough for the two Gladiator Ludus that are needed to start our campaign.

Here is the House of Quintillius. It is composed of cagey veterans, Brabarians, and prisoners-of-war. The best warriors that Quitnillius' money could buy and train. They are his picked men.

House Quintillius led by the Murmillo Juggartha

And the Ludus of Luptis Minor. The house of the local Gladiator school in North Africa. These men are common slaves forced to train for The Games. How will they fare against the picked men of House Quintillius?

The much larger House of Luptis Minor. The hometown Gladiators.

The Games: Blood and Spectacle- Report

The magistrate of Roman controlled Luptis Minor in North African welcomed the traveling Gladiator Troupe of Marcus Crassus Quintillius. Quintillius had left the Spanish town of Tarraco in a world wide tour for his troupe. It seemed logical that his first stop would be in his hometown's sister city.

The Roman nobles whispered that the Troupe of Quintillius fled Roman Spain under a dark cloud. Some claimed unpaid gambling debts, others an affair with the wife of a powerful man, and others claimed that he had secretly converted to some outlawed religion. Whatever the truth, the Troupe of Quintillius was the talk of Lupti Minor.

The Magistrate of Lupti Minor was eager to see how the Troupe of Quintillius fared against the local Gladiator ludus of Lanista Metallus. His local school was know as the Ludus of Lupti Minor. The Magistrate himself offered to be Editor of the Games between the local favorites and traveling gladiators. However, before the main event of the Spectacle Gladiatora; he asked the rival Lanista to put on a display to the public masses in the marketplace.

Before the days events, the Gladiators of the rival troupes marched from opposite ends of the town into the marketplace. The citizens of Leptis Minor lined the streets to cheer and jeer. For their part the Gladiators made a nice show of flexing, rattling their weapons, and thumping their chests.

The two troupes met in the center of the marketplace. There they were surrounded by the crowd. The Magistrate went to the center. There he officially introduced the rival troupes.

Since this was going to be our first run through for the campaign, my opponent and I decided to start with a “lighter and gentler” set of Games. We purposely decided to make the crowd Merciful, and choose the events instead of randomly rolling them. Plus, I didn't have any Noxii, chariots, or animals painted up so....

Event 1- Puglarius- Merciful- Sunny and Bright
House Quintillius to be represented by their Gaullus Marcomanni.
House Luptis Minor would be represented by Lupin Lupinious the Velite.

Event 2- Warm-up Match- Merciful- Normal Weather
House Quintillius would be fielding Priapus the Retarius.
The local boys of Luptis Minor would send out one of their Secutor, Ordinarri.

Event 3- Single Combat- Merciful- Normal
Quintillius sent out their champion Juggartha!
Versus Luptis Minor's own Mediocrates the Samnite.

Since this series of Games was suppose to take place in the forum, we pulled out a rectangular board 19 inches across and 14 wide. We placed two rows of columns, three on each side as obstacles/terrain. Luptis Minor got the South end of town, while House Quintillius got the North side.

Event 1 Puglarius
Both combatants handed their weapons, and slowly unlatched their armor. With a flourish, Marcomanni removed his helm and hoisted in the air with a roar. The crowd returned his cheer with vigor!

Across the forum, Lupin carefully wrapped the heavy clothes around his hands and wrists. When he was done, he inspected them carefully. Then, to please the crowd he let out his trademark wolf howl, and his local fans picked it up and it carried around the forum.

Satisfied, the two men eyed each other carefully. The magistrate, and Editor for the Games introduced each combatant, beseech the Gods, laid down the rules, and with a flourish gestured for the event to begin!

Since this is a Pugliarius, neither Gladiator has their armor or weapons. This is a bare-knuckled brawl!

Turn 1
The opening turn, both warriors confidently step forward towards each other.

Turn 2
Lupin turns and darts behind one of the pillars. Marcomanni turns towards him and confidently strides closer, not even raising his fists. Next turn looks like someone will make the first move.

Turn 3
Lupin wins the Initiative, and decides to try to charge the Gaullus. Lupin puts all his CP into the attack, and the +1 for charging. Marcomanni, only puts 3 CP into it his defense and decides to save one for a potential counter-attack.

Lupin charges with a ferocious howl, but the wily barbarian is ready. Not only does he intercept the attack, but he manages to land a solid counter-strike (Knock Down Striking Success Defense) that knocks the velite to the ground. The Gaullus follows it up with a kick, that reduces Lupin to Pain 1.

After the blow, Lupin springs back to his feet. Marcomanni finally takes a ready stance to fight.

Turn 4
After landing the first blow, Marcomanni gets ready for some serious brawling. He decides to put 2 of his Combat Pool into the attack, and holds onto two for defending. Lupin puts 2 to defense as well.

Marcomanni shows his ability with another striking success that gets past Lupin's guard. The crowd shouts as the Velite looks like he will be momentarily Dazed, but the Velite shakes it off quickly. However, his counter attack fails to find the mark as he shakes off a punch to the face.

Turn 5
Lupin puts all his dice into his attack, while Marcomanni puts only 2 to defend. Lupin got a success and a striking success, and he decided to keep the double Success from his 6. This is a wise move, and Marcomanni rolls 2 successful defense dice. Marcomanni is reduced 1 Pain. However, the Gaullus' return strike lands clean and the velite is reduced to 0 pain.

The crowd is beginning to get involved.

Turn 6
Marcomanni is quick to follow up his hits and attacks with all 4 dice! Lupin had decided to defend with only 2. Lupin is lucky and wards off the Barbarians frenzied blows. However, he misses with his counter-attack.

Then, Lupin tries to break away from the combat by backing up. However, Marcomanni keeps him locked up.

Turn 7
Marcomanni again attacks, this time with 2 dice. Lupin defends with 2. The Barbarian's attacks are swatted aside, and the Velite pushes him back with a shove. Marcomanni stumbles backwards fromt eh defensive striking success.

This gives the Velite some room to move. He turns and moves away from the Barbarian with a howl. Safely out of range, he tries to Recover Strength. Which he does successfully with double 1's! This gives him a Pain of 1 again!

Turn 8
The Velite begins to run circles around his opponent. True to his name, Lupin Lupinius begins the bay wildly, and signals for the crowd to join him!

Frustrated by his inability to take out the lighter gladiator, Marcomanni turns to give chase.

Turn 9
This time, Marcomanni cuts the angle on the Velite, and charges him. He puts all of his CP into the attack. However, Lupin doesn't see him coming and can not properly defend. Marcomanni easily thros the Velite to the ground and kicks him a few times too. Lupin is Down and reduced below Pain 0.

Lupin crawls two inches away and tries to regain his strength, but fails.

Turn 10
Marcomanni begins to suffer from fatigue. However, he easily walks up and knocks Lupin out while he is downed. The crowd hisses, jeers, and boos as the local Gladiator is dragged unconcious from the forum. However, he will recover with no serious injuries.

Winner: Marcomanni!

Event 2- Warm-up Match

The attendants of the two Ludus' rush forward and clear the forum of any accumulated debris. The slaves of House Luptis Minor drag Lupin from the forum, and revive him with a bucket full of water. With a nod from his Laniste, Ordinarii the Numidian dons his Secutor's helm and steps into the Forum.

The Magistrate proudly announces the Luptis Minor gladiator. A ripple of approval and applause race through the crowd as Ordinarri raises his sword high in salute. However, their enthusiasm is cut short as Priapus the Retarius steps in on the other end. The Germanic barbarian and his blind hair hush the crowd. He calmly stares down his opponent, before breaking into a deep chested laugh,

The crowd bristles at the jeer from the blonde German, and begin to roundly boo him. The Retarius seems to relish it.

The magistrate cuts the intro short, and motions the two gladiators to their ready positions. Ludus slaves carefully replace the live weapons of the Gladiator's with their wooden training equivalent. Priapus sneers at his wooded trident with disdain.

Turn 1
Surprisingly, Ordinarri nimbly springs forward and runs towards his opponent on the other side of the forum. Priapus jogs around behind a column and begins to swing his net.

Turn 2
Priapus jogs behind the next column. From there he casually shouts insults to Ordinarri in Germanic. Ordinarri begins the circle around the back of the column the Retarius is hiding behind. The crowd begins to chant for Ordinarri.

Turn 3
The two Gladiators continue to circle around the column, and the crowd starts to get restless.

Turn 4
Priapus moves out from behind the column, and throws his Net. He uses all 4 of his Combat Pool to try and entangle the Secutor. He defends with 4 and saves 1 to attack. The Net easily goes over Ordinarri, and entangles him. The Secutor twists and turns in the Net, but is unable to disentangle himself from it.

In the Recovery Phase, Ordinarri again fails to get the net off himself.

Turn 5
With his opponent safely entangled, Priapus charges into him. He puts all of his CP into the attack. Ordinarri's CP is half due to being entangled, and decides to use 2 of his 3 to defend. Priapus manages to land a hit on the Secutor, but the trident slides off Ordinarri's Manica. The Secutor attacks back, but his sword fails to find the nimble German.

In the Recovery Phase, Ordinarri tears the Net from him, and tosses it aside. Priapus begins to sense the tide turning.

Turn 6
Priapus disengages and backpedals away from the Secutor. However, freed from the net Ordinarri charges forward and attacks with all of his dice. Priapus tries to block with all of his dice.

Ordinarri's sword strikes true, and he hits the Retarius potentially 3 times, but one of his swings is absorbed by Priapus' greave. The Retarius is reduced to Pain 0. Ordinarri locks him up.

Turn 7
Ordinarri wins initiative and presses his ferocious attack and wins Initiative! Savagely, he puts all of his Combat Pool into the attack and holds nothing back. Priapus tries to defend with 3 and holds one for a counter-attack.

The Retarius manages to beat back the Secutor, and pushes him back 2 inches due to a striking success. With some breathing room, he darts away from his opponent and begins to circle towards his discarded net.

Turn 8
Priapus dashes forward and retrieves his net, and then quickly backpedals away from Ordinarri. In return, the Secutor begins to turn towards his foe.

In the Recovery Phase, Priapus tries to regain strength, but fails.

Turn 9
Priapus again tries to entangle the Secutor. He uses all of his CP, while Ordinarri defends with 3. The Net flies out, but Ordinarri easily swats it aside with his shield, and it lands behind a column and safely away from the Retarius's ability to retrieve it.

With that, Ordinarri manages to charge the Retarius and attack. Using his shield as a weapon, the Numidian catches the German in the side of the head. The Retarius goes down.

Turn 10
Priapus crawls away, but it won't be far enough. Ordinarri runs up and with a shot from his wooden sword, puts the Retarius out of the fight.

Winner- Ordinarri the Secutor!

Event 3- Single Combat!
Lanista Quintillius grimaced as the final blow was struck. His servants ran out and pulled the german to the north gate of the marketplace. He turned to his prize Murmillo.

“It is up to you now. Finish this rabble.”

With a nod, the Nubian Murmillo latched the iron grill of his helm. A slave adjusted the straps to his shield while another placed his Gladius in his hand.

On the other side, The Luptis Minor slaves and Gladiators whooped and cheered their Secutor champion. The winner grasped the forearm of the next man, a fellow Numidian. With that, the Samnite Gladiator stepped into the forum and drank in the wild cheers of the crowd.

Quintillius sneered, “A samnite? How archaic.”

With that, the Magistrate introduced the Lutpis Minor gladiator as Mediocrates. The crowd was going wild for him. Then, he introduced Juggartha and a terrified hush fell across the forum. As he entered, the Murmillo slowly gazed around the arena before settling his gaze on the distant Samnite. With that he offered a traditional salute.

As the magistrate signaled the fight to begin, an expectant hush fell over the forums.

Turn 1
Juggartha jogged forward, eager to slug it out. Mediocrates was a bit more cautious, but came forward.

Turn 2
They both moved towards each other, carefully sizing up the opponent.

Turn 3
Juggartha judge the distance to be right, and charged forward with only the sound of metal-on-metal as his armor jingled together. He put 4 CP into the attack and +1 for charging. Mediocrates decided to defend with 3 CP and saved one to counter-attack. The wily Murmillo's attack managed to sneak through and draw blood, reducing Mediocrates to Pain 1. The Samnite's counter-attack banged loudly off the Murmillo's greave.

Turn 4
Mediocrates attacked with 4 CP, while Juggartha defends with 3 CP. The Murmillo easily defends and gets a pair of Striking Successes. He attempts to disarm Mediocrates sword, and the blade goes flying and lands with a clang on the tiles of the Forum. This is followed up with another Striking Success that disorients Mediocrates with a solid shot from the Murmillo's shild into his opponents face mask. The crowd gasps at the martial display!

With that Juggartha goes on the offensive. He hits Mediocrates twice, but worse goes past his guard with a striking success! This reduces the dazed Samnite's armor save. He is injured twice and reduced below Pain 0, and downs Mediocrates!

In the Recovery Phase, Mediocrates lifts the two fingers in a sign of submission. With that, the battle is over!

Winner- Juggartha!

The crowd, awed by Juggartha's martial display roared with approval. The Nubian reached down and helped Mediocrates to his feet and congratulated him on a well-fought and honorable battle. The two clasped forearms in friendship before returning to there sides. This sign of solidarity and sportsmanship only caused the crowd to grow even louder.

With that, the Magistrate declared House Quintillius the winner of the demonstration and announced the date of the first set of official games in the Arena between the rival Gladiator schools.

The Games: Blood and Spectacle- Game Report

After the display in the marketplace, word of House Quintillius' Gladiators spread through Luptis Minor quickly. The first “official” Games day was a celebration of Jupiter Triumphant to celebrate the Roman defeat of the Carthaginians so long ago.

The Roman and local nobility were a buzz to see Roman Quintillius and his troupe would fare against the local Ludus of Lupti Minor on such a historic event. Meanwhile, the common populace was eager for the local Gladiator's to show the out-of-towners a thing or about fighting. On the day of the big event, many in the crowd came prepared to cheer on their respective troupe.

However, the local Gladiator troupe was clearly the underdogs in today's matches. This caused their Lanista Metallus some worry before the start of the Games.

Today, we decided to follow the rules and randomly determine the Events of the day, Mood of the Crowd, and so on. The regular rules about Mercy and Freedom would be in effect. This was no demonstration match. We would both choose Gladiators as the Events were determined.

Event 1: Tertiarri
Weather: Normal
Mood of the Crowd: Normal

A Tertiarri battle has each house choose 2 Gladiators. 1 is chosen as the Primus. When a Primus is defeated, his Tertiarri partner can then enter the battle.

House Quintillius

Primus
Longinus
Hoplomacchus, Desserter

Tertiarri
Priapus
Retarius, Barbarin

House of Lupti Minor

Primus
Avergonix
Secutor, Slave

Tertiarri
Mediocrates
Samnite, Slave

For House Quintillius, their fearsome spear wielding Hopplomachus and blonde haired Barbarian Retarius enter from their gate. Priapus the Blonde Barbarian is roundly booed by the crowd as he raises his Trident skyward. He has proven himself to be an antagonist of the crowd. They crowd boos even louder when Longinus is announced as the Primus.

For Lupits Minor, the Primus is Averagonix the Secutor. He did not get a chance to fight in the exhibition and his eager to prove himself. He bangs his Gladius against his shield and exhorts the crowd to cheer even louder. His Tertiarri is the Numidian Samnite, the heavy Gladiator roundly beaten in the demonstration match.

Turn 1:
Both Gladiator's jog forward. Longinis moves to get around the center column.

Turn 2:
Avergonix jogs up behind the center column, leery of a spear being tossed his way. The plan seems to work, as Longinus decides to close the distance instead.

Turn 3:
The Secutor turns to face the oncoming foe, and then backs away. He was not in a proper position to charge yet, and wanted to give himself space. However, he is now in the open. Longinus walks forward, putting himself into the Secutor's charge distance next turn. However, he hefts his spear and tosses it at the other Gladiator.

Longinus puts all of his CP into the attack, and Avergonix uses 3 to defend, and holds one to parry with his shield. Longinius gets 2 successes, and Averagonix gets 4. He easily bats the spear down, and it lands a few feet in front of him.

From the gates, their fellows cheer them on!

Turn 4:
Luck is with Longinus as he wins initiative. He charges forward, scoops up his Spear, and attacks! He uses 2 dice +1 for charging. He holds the other 2 back for defense. The Secutor defends with 2 to start with.

Longinus gets 2 successes and striking success, while Avergonix gets only 1. He decides to use 1 more CP to parry the striking success. It works, and the success is negated as a 1 is re-rolled! However, the Secutor gets his arm up ion time, and the spear slides across his Manica.

The Secutor counter-attacks with a flurry of blows from his Gladius. Longinus is unable to get his smaller shield up in time. Avergonix had 1 success and a striking success that he converted to 2 successes. Longinus got 0 successes. Oh no for him! He made 1 out of 3 armor saves, so is reduced to 0 Pain!

Priapus began to ready himself.

Turn 5:
Shaken, Longinus wins Initiative again. The Hopplomacchus backs away from the combat quickly. This again, gives him a bit of space, and he throws his spear at his foe. He uses three dice, Avergonix also uses three to defend. Despite the close range, the Secutor again swats the Spear to the ground with his shield. Longinus draws his Gladius.

Determined to finish his foe, Avergonix charges into the fight, leading with his large shield. However, the wily desserter was ready, and knocks him back with his shield. Longimus used a striking success to try to disarm the Secutor of his Gladius, but the gladiator maintains his grip.

Turn 6:
Longinus counter-attacks with his Gladius using three dice, while his opponent also defends with three dice, saving two to counter attack. Avergonix beats him by one, and the Hopplomacchus' attack fails. The Secutor counters, but Longinus pushes him back with a mighty shove, using a striking success on the Defensive! This gives the Hopplomacchus room to move again, as he does not follow-up.

Turn 7:
However, the Secutor recovers faster than his opponent and wins the Initiative. He charges straight back in and attacks! Averagonix uses 4 attacks (+1 for the charge and another from his gladius) and holds 2 back for defense while Longinus uses 3 to defend and holds 1 back +1 from his gladius to potentially counter attack/Parry.

A terrible roll for Averagonix leaves one potential hit, but Longinus scores 3 striking successes on the defense! He uses one to cancel out Averagonix's attack. This time the Hopplomacchus knocks-back the Secutor and tries to knock him down as well. The Push- back is automatic. The Knock Down test is failed by Averagonix and he falls flat on his butt. The crowd roars in approval.

With his move, Longinus walks over and scoops up his spear. He doesn't have enough movement to attack the knocked down Secutor.

Humiliated. Averagonix jumps back to his feet and faces his foe.

Turn 8
This time Longinus tries to use his spear and charge past the Secutor. He puts 3 CP and +1 for charging into the attack and holds back 1 for defense. The Secutor puts in 3 to defend, and holds 2 for attacking/parrying. Longinus gets 2 striking success, and Averagonix parries one to a simple success. The Secutor only got two success, so one attack got past his guard and draws blood! The Secutor fails to lock the Hopplomacchus in combat as he stumbled back from the hit and Longinus moves past.

The Secutor does not have enough Initaitive to turn to his opponent, so he turns away and jogs away. The gap between the two opponents widen, and it is clear they will have to maneuver around before they can close the gap again.

Turn 9
Longinus begins to slowly turn back towards his foe. The distance may allow him to use his spear again soon! Averagonix begins to turn in place.

Turn 10
Fatigue may begin to set in! Both warriors fail their Fatigue tests and their CP is reduced by 1! The Hopplomacchus manages to turn and face his opponent, he steps forward, readying his spear. The Secutor also slowly turns and steps forward, but he isn't quite facing his opponent yet.

Turn 11
Both Gladiators make their Fatigue tests.

This time, Averagonix wins the Initiative. He finishes his turn to face his opponent, but instead of closing the distance, readies himself to defend against a thrown spear.

Confident in the strength of his arm, the Hopplomacchus steps backwards out of charge range and readies to throw.

Turn 12
Both pass their Fatigue tests! Longinus hurls his spear with all of his CP at the Secutor. He chooses to defend with 2 and hold back 1 for parries. Longinus gets 1 success and a striking success, which Avergonix parries with his shield and causes to miss. They both have 1 success, so no hits and the spear is batted down again! It lands in front of the Secutor.

Now the Secutor walks up, and hovers over the fallen weapon, daring Longinus to come and take it!

Turn 13
The fatigue is starting to show as the two Gladiators weapons begin to droop. They both fail their Fatigue tests again!

With his Gladius drawn, the Hopplomacchus again tries to charge past the Secutor. Fatigues he only has 2 CP and +1 for the Gladius. He decides to use them all! The Secutor is also Fatigues and only has 1 CP and +1 from his shield. He defends with both.

Longinus gets a success and a striking success, for 3 total success. Averagonix has no dice to parry with prays for a good roll, but only gets one success. Avergonix only makes one armor save, so his Pain is reduced to 0 as well.

The wound means that the Secutor can not lock up the Hopplomacchus in combat, but the Hopplomacchus runs past the Secutor again. Another successful hit and run attack!

Turn 14
The fatigue is too much and the Secutor falls to the ground exhausted and out of the fight. However, the Hopplomacchus is not faring much better with another failed fatigue roll of his own. He only has 1 CP remaining!

Priapus laughs heartily at the fallen Secutor. Meanwhile, the fresh Samnite Mediocrates enters from the other side of the Arena through the Gates of Luptis Minor.

Turn 15
We decide that if the Gladiator does nothing for the turn, he is not susceptible to Fatigue. Therefore, Longinus stands and awaits his foe without turning or moving. Mediocrates jogs forward, eager for battle.

Turn 16
Longinus passes his fatigue test and walks over and picks up his spear. Mediocrates slows his pace and moves forward, measuring his foe.

Turn 17
Mediocrates wins Initiative and charges in with a battle cry. He knows his foe is in a weakened state and charges in with all of his Combat Pool and charge bonus going into the attack. Longinus can barely lift his arms to defend himself. Despite this, the Hopplomacchus manages to get his Manica up and the Samnite's sword bounces harmlessly away!

Turn 18
Mediocrates presses his advantage and wins Initiative again. However, it is too much for the Hopplomacchus and he collapses to the ground exhausted.

The Editor declares the House of Luptis Minor the winner of the first event! However, the crowd is pleased by the show of dedication and martial valor from the two opponents and grants Mercy to them both! However, as they were both Out of the Fight at the end of the Event, they will still need to roll for Injuries.

Event 2
Damnati Combat!
Weather: Normal
Crowd Mood: Normal

In Damnati combat, two condemned criminals are given the chance to fight for their freedom against a pair of Gladiators. The Damnati are given a sword, shield, and a simple leather Manica. If they beat their Gladiator foes they are allowed to go free!

Damnati
Sword, Shield, Freemen

House Quintillius
Marcomanni
Gaulus, Barbarian

House of Lupti Minor
Regulus
Dimachaerus, Slave

[i]The Editor of the Games spent time detailing the crimes of the two Damnati, but Metallus and Quintillius were too busy deciding who would fight next. They both knew this was considered a lesser amusement, and the Damnatii would have little chance against a trained Gladiator. However, they were both eager to give the crowd a good show.

Quintillius nodded to his big barbarian Marcomanni. He hailed from regions just north of the Danube. The Gladiator rose and hefted his axe to his shoulder. He spoke little Latin, but he knew what was expected of him. As he entered the arena the crowd jeered, remembering how he had treated Lupine Lupinius at the forum. The big barbarian gave little notice. In the opposite gate, the Dimachaerus Regulus lifted his swords to the crowd and let the sun glitter menacingly along his blades. He received a much warmer welcome.

In the center, the two Damnatii shuffled their feet nervously. They gingerly tested their weapons with the odd, unpracticed swing.

With a flourish, the Editor announced the battle was to begin.

Turn 1
Marcomanni wins the Initiative and calmly steps forward. His entire posture and stance exude menace and danger. Regulus does likewise, his swords spinning in a hypnotic pattern. The Damnatii facing Marcomanni holds his ground, but makes sure he is facing the Gladiator squarely. His fellow combatant tries to rush past Regulus with a charge. He puts all of his attacks into it, hoping to move past. Regulus defends with 3 and holds a dice back to parry. The Damnatii scores two hits, and Regulus only 1 defense, he tries to parry but it only makes things worse as the Damnatii gets a striking success! Regulus fails his armor save and is reduced 1 Pain, and he fails to lock-up the Damnatii. Worse, the striking success is used to knock him down! Not a good start for Regulus!

In the Recovery phase, he fails to get up.

Turn 2
Marcomanni lifts his axe high and charges in with a fearsome roar! He knows he can't be parried and puts 3 CP and +1 for charging into it. He holds one back to defend. However, the Damnatti puts all his CP into defense. The Barbarian gets 1 Striking Success which he converts into two successes. The Damnatii only got one. The axe cuts through the defense and reduces the Damnatii by 1.

Regulus passes his test and gets up, facing his opponent. The Damnatti turns and runs away, giving himself some room to maneuver.

Turn 3
Marcomanni has locked his opponent in combat. He attacks with 2 CP, and holds 2 back for defense, while the Damnatii defends with 2 and holds one to counter-attack. This time the Damnatii blocks the attack and counters with a solid shot to the Gualus' helm. The Gladiator stumbles about dazed from the counter.

Regulus manages to chase down the fleeing Damnatii and attack! Since he is out of the Damnatti's combat arc, he will not be able to parry or attack back without turning to face him. He decides to use 3 CP +1 for charging to attack and holds 1 to defend if needed. The Damnatii decides to put it all into defense. Regulus leaps after his prey, and strikes a pair of slashing blows across his back. Blood flows freely and the crowd roars in approval! The Dmanatii is reduced to 0 Pain.

The Damnatii facing Marcomanni attacks the Dazed Gladiator with 1 dice. Marcomanni, being dazed can only defend with half his available CP, so 1. However, it is enough and he manages to get the haft of his axe up and block the Damnatii's swing.

The Damnatii facing Regulus is slippery and manages to break from combat again! This time he jogs away and begins to turn back towards his pursuer.

Turn 4
Regulus moves quickly. He tries to return the favor to his opponent and attempts to charge past him and deliver a striking blow. He uses 2 CP +1 for charging to attack, and holds 2 to defend. The Damnatii defends with 2 and holds 1, hoping to lock up the Dimachaerus. The injured Damnatii sees the attack and manages to ward off the blows and lock up the Gladiator in combat!

Marcomanni just attacks with 3 CP and holds one to defend. No fancy foot work or maneuver for him. The Damnatii uses 2 CP for defense and holds onto 1 to defend. Marcomanni gets 2 success and a striking which he converts into 2 more successes, for a total of four. The Damnatii gets 1 striking which he also converts into 2, but it isn't nearly enough! The Barbarian's axe is too powerful and it smashes past the Damnatii's guard. However, it was enough for him to deflect the blow across his manica with 2 sixes for the armor save! He is not ready to go down yet!

The Damnatii fighting Regulus takes a swing, which the Gladiator easily blocks, and then uses the momentum of to try and disarm the man of his sword. The blade goes flying into the air and lands in the arena sands a few feet away. The crowd cheers at the feat of arms!

The Damnatti facing Marcomanni also counter attacks, and slips past the Gladiator Barbarians defense with a striking success. Blood is drawn and Marcomanni is reduced to Pain 1!

Turn 5
Despite the wound, Marcomanni silently attacks back to finish this event. He uses 3 CP to attack again, holding onto only 1. The Damnatii defends with 2 again. However, this time Marcomanni is slow and cumbersome in his attack, and the Damnatii easily blocks it and then uses his body to try and knock him down with a Striking Success. However, the Barbarian just shrugs it off and stays on his feet.

With his opponent swordless, Regulus puts all of his CP into an attack and holds nothing back! The Damnatii defends with 2 again and holds 1 to counter attack with his shield. Regulus gets a success and converts a striking success into 2 more for 3 total. The Damnatii gets two successes with his shield. One of the Dimachaerus sword's finds its way past the Damnatii's guard and hits him cleanly in the neck. He drops to the ground like a sack.

The Damanti facing Marcomanni follows up his body block with a quick slash. Which the barbarian counters with a twirl of his axe.

In the Recovery Phase, Regulus plunges his blades through the back of the downed Damnati, bringing his battle to an end. For this, the crowd begins to chant his name in praise of his victory.

Turn 6
Marcomanni hears the cheers of the crowd and realizes that Regulus has probably downed his opponent. This make sthe barbarian angry, and he puts all of his 4 CP into attacking the Damnatii and finishing him off. The Damnatii uses 2 to defend and keeps one to counter attack. In his anger, marcomanni whiffs all of his attacks, and the Damnatii sweeps with his shield to try and knock down the barbarian with a defensive striking success. The move knocks the legs out from under him, and he topples down to the sand.

Regulus turns towards the remaining Damnati and heads towards him. He sets-up to potentially charge him.

The Damnati attacks the fallen over Barbarian with his one remaining CP, while the barbarian has 0 CP! The attack cuts home, and Marcomanni is reduced to 0 Pain. The crowd gasps in shock! One more hit and he could be done for! Seeing the approaching Regulus, he turns and heads away from him.

In the Recovery Phase, Marcomanni again fails to get up.

Turn 7
Marcomanni struggles up to his knees, and rises! He faces the direction the Damnati ran off, but takes no further action this turn. Regulus jogs up to support him going forward.

Seeing two Gladiators coming towards him, the Damnati tries to maneuver into a better position.

Turn 8
Now furious, Marcomanni charges straight into the Damnati and attacks with 3 CP +1 for charging and holds one back to defend. The Damnati defends with 2 and holds back 1 again. Again, the Damnati squirms away from a telling blow!

Now Regulus joins the fray and charges in! He uses 3 CP +1 for charging as well, and holds back 1 to defend. The Damnati decides to use his last CP to defend. Two striking success, with 1 converted to a special move of Pin. The Damnati gets 0 successes, and fails his armor check. For wounding he is Out of the Fight! As Regulus again leaps in and cuts down his opponent with a spray of blood!

The Damnati coughs up blood as he kneels in the arena sands. The crowd roars in release as Regulus decapitates the dying criminal with a flourish. Marcomanni grudgingly congratulates his fellow Gladiator with a nod of approval.

The Editor declares the House of Lupti Minor the winner of the second event! The Underdogs look like they are in fine form today! Two for two events!

Event 3
Pairs
Weather: Normal
Crowd mood: Normal

For a Pairs event, each house choose two Gladiators. They will then be paired against each other in the arena! Typically they are against the same class, but if the same class is not available they will try the next lighter class.

House Quntillius
Juggartha
Murmillo, Prisoner-of-War

Lucius
Provacatuer, Desserter

House of Lupti Minor
Moderatus
Thraex, Slave

Ordinarri
Secutor, Slave

In this Event, Juggartha will pair against Moderatus while Lucius will pair against Orindarri.

House Lupti Minor entered the arena first. The crowd cheered Ordinarri, as word of his victory in the forums had spread through the town. The Numidian raised his sword in salute, and then slipped his hlemet on. With him was the Thraex Moderatus. His style of fightng was a fan favorite, and those who were fans of the smaller shield cheered his entrance.

On the other side, entered the Provacatuer Lucuis. He beat his sword against his shield in challenge tot he crowd. The jeered and booed him heartily. However, they all fell hushed as Juggartha the Murmillo entered the arena. He was the most feared of House Quintillius' Gladiators. He calmly looked around the crowd daring any to mock him. It was silent until the sudden bark of bookmakers broke the moment.

The Editor formally announced the event and the Pairings. The crowd stirred in anticipation of a good event!

Turn 1
Moderatus moves forward slowly, while Ordinarri jogs ahead. Their opponents match them.

Turn 2
Ordinarri turns slightly to put the column between himself and Lucius to forestall any potential charge attacks. Lucius jogs forward, eager to try and catch his opponent out of position. Juggartha slowly steps forward, confident in his ability to deal death. Moderatus matches his pace both wiating to see who will get the chance to charge in first.

Turn 3
Moderatus steps forward and halts, he slowly draws a line in the sand with his curved Thracian sword, and then dares the Murmillo to cross it. Juggartha doesn't change his pace and continues to march forward implacably.

Lucius moves in on the Secutor, waiting to see how the match will develop. The Secutor turns back towards the Provacatuer, and backs away, trying to get the proper distance to be the one to charge instead of the one to receive it.

Turn 4
Ordinarri just turns and squares up with Lucius. He has judged the distance to be too great for a charge and prepares himself. What he didn't count on was the lighter and quicker Gladiator type being able to cover the distance, which Lucius does!

Lucius uses his +1 for charging and +1 for Gladius in addition to 2 CP on the initial charge attack, which gives him two for defense later. Ordinarri chooses to defend with 3 CP and hold back 2 to attack back. Ordinarri chooses to use 1 CP to parry a Striking Success with his shield, which is successful! He easily wards of Lucius' charge. The sound of iron on iron rings out.

Juggartha calmly walks forward, his eyes looking over the top of his large shield. The confidence of the Murmillo unnerves Moderatus, and he decides to charge! Moderatus uses 2 CP and +1 for charging into the attack, this gives him 1 in reserve. Juggartha uses 3 CP to defend and holds back 1 Cp and his Gladius to attack back or parry. Moderatus gets two successes, while Juggartha gets 2 and one is a striking success. He tries to convert this into a knock down. Moderatus fails his Initiative test and falls down.

Turn 5
With his opponent on the ground, Juggartha strikes! He uses 3 CP+1 from his Gladius to attack the knocked down Moderatus. Moderatus realizes he is in desperate straits and uses all 3 CP to defend. Juggartha earns 2 successes and converts a striking success into a single success and past their guard to reduce Moderatus' armor save by 1. Moderatus scores 0 successes. He has to put his faith in his armor. He manages to kick up an block an attack with his greave, but the Murmillo easily reduces him to Pain 0.

Lucius attacks Ordinarri with 2 CP including 1 from his Gladius for 3 total dice. Ordinarri defends with 3 CP as well and holds the rest back to parry. 1 success for Lucius and Ordinarri does not parry it. However, he gets 0 successes on the defense and fails his save! His pain is reduced by 1. The crowd is not overly pleased by the sloppy sword work.

Ordinarri returns the attack with 2 CP, and Lucius defends with 2. He holds none back to parry. Ordinarri rolls 1 success and a striking that he converts into 2 more for 3. Lucius rolls 2 defense of his own. He also fails to get his armor in the path, and Ordinarri's blade draws blood, reducing Lucius to 1 Pain! An even match-up?

Moderatus tries to get up! However, the Murmillo has him pinned beneath his weight, and the Thraex fails to rise! He scrambles away on his hands and knees to try and get some distance.

In the recovery phase, he tries to rise again, but fails again! His antics are beginning to look comic to the crowd.

Turn 6
Lucius and Ordinarri continue their sword duel. Lucius strikes first with 3 CP +1 from his Gladius as he becomes more aggressive in his sword work. Ordinarri defends with 3 and keeps 2 for parries. 2 regular successes, so Ordinarri elects to trust his defenses and armor. He defends 1 success, but has to trust his armor for the next. Which holds true as he knocks the blade aside with his manica.

In return, he attacks with 1 CP and 1 from his Gladius. Lucius defends with 1. A striking success for the Secutor, he decides to use it as 2 successes. Only a striking success of his own will keep Lucius from taking an armor save. However, his defense gets 0 successes, so he must also trust in his armor. The Secutor's blade strikes his opponent in the chest, but his breastplate keeps him from sustaining any serious injuries. However, Lucius had learned to be more cautious!

Juggartha stalks up tot he crawling Thraex, intent on putting him out of the fight. He puts all of his CP into the attack for 5 dice! Moderatus desperately tries to defend with all his CP. 3 successes for Juggartha, and 1 striking success for Moderatus which he converts into 2 successes! One hit might get through! However, the Thraex manages to get his shield up in time to ward away the blow!

However, his desperate defense means he is unable to rise again! He continues to scramble away in the sand, getting closer to the other pair of fighting Gladiators. In the Recovery Phase he fails yet again to rise! How embarrassing!

Turn 7
Juggartha again follows-up his attack, but this time he charges in and leaps at the knocked down Gladiator intent on landing a finishing blow! Again, he puts all 5 dice +1 for charging into the attack! Moderatus again puts all 3 CP into defense! Two success and a striking success which Juggartha converts into 2 more. Nothing fancy here, just aggression! Moderatus fails to defend any hits! It is up to his armor! Two of the hits are saved! However, 2 get through! The wounding roll is double 6's! Moderatus is taken out of the fight and will face a Mercy roll in the recovery phase! Juggartha raises his sword and shield in victory and roars at the crowd.

Ordinarri hears Juggartha's triumphant roar and knows that Moderatus is down. He must finish off Lucius quickly if he is to have the strength to fight the Murmillo. To that end, He puts 4Where he gets CP +1 from his Gladius into the attack, and holds back nothing to defend! Lucius, defends with 2 CP and holds the rest for parries and counter-attacks. Ordinarri only gets 2 successes. Lucius goes to defend with his two. Lucius easily matches the Secutor's successes. Ordinarri is in a tough spot.

Lucius counter attacks with 2 CP +1 from his Gladius. Oh no, two striking successes! He converts 1 into extra successes and the other into Past their guard result, lowering Ordinarri's armor save! 3 hits, and Ordinarri gets 1 save! That reduces him to below 0 Pain and he must make a single wounding roll! Lucius's blade cuts deep and wounds Ordinarri! He is knocked down, and his combat pool is reduced by 1!

In the Recovery Phase, Ordinarri tries to regain his Strength, but fails. He then tries to get-up, which he also fails to do! Ordinarri must decide if he wants to ask for Mercy or try to keep fighting. As he decides, Juggartha asks the crowd if Moderatus should receive Mercy? It is denied, and the Thraex is killed! How humiliating.

Ordinarri decides to ask for Mercy, as he is knocked down and wounded. He raises his two fingers in the sign of the Missio. Lucius turns tot he crowd. For the Secutor they roar in approval and the Secutor is spared!

With that, the Editor declares House Quintillius as the victors int his event!

The fellow Gladiator's of the House of Luptis Minor assist Ordinarri back to his feet and lead him from the arena. Servants drag the dead Thraex across the sand and out the gate. Juggartha and Lucius delight in the roar of the crowd for a few moments, before they too leave the arena.

After the Arena is cleared, both Houses enter and stand opposite each other. Between them, their Lanista wait for the decision of the Editor. Today, Metallus of the House of Luptis Minor is given the laurels of victory!

I haven't done much with The Games: Blood and Spectacle in a while. However, I did manage to get a few new Gladiators painted up to be recruited into a Ludus.

The first one is a Secutor/Murmillo and the second one is a Hoplomacchus.

The Games: Blood and Spectacle- Game Report

After the Magistrate of Lupti Minor’s display in the marketplace and the Games celebrating the anniversary of the defeat of Carthage his popularity was at an all-time high. His political rivals could not stand to see this happen. The Magistrates leading rival organized a Munera (or Funeral) games to celebrate the achievements of his dead father-in-law. He had been a popular and powerful Magistrate himself, and it made little difference that he had been dead for at least a decade.

Word spread quickly through the town and surrounding province. Quintillius’s picked men would face the local Ludus again in the Arena. Many wondered if the formidable Juggartha would see the arena yet again. He had built a fierce reputation and was a fan favorite from Quintillius’s house. However, the Roman woman of Lupti Minor could not stop talking about the flashing swords of the Dimachaerus of Regulus and his quick reflexes. They yearned to see him in the arena again.

Despite the word about town, Metallus the Lanista of the House of Lupti Minor was nervous. In the last games, he had lost two valuable Gladiators. He knew that his house were going to be significant underdogs this time out and he worried if his Ludus would last the season if losses like that continued. Meanwhile, Quintillius was looking to snatch the laurels of victory from his rivals head once again.

The stage was set for another spectacle.

Oh boy! More Gladiator action! We will be following the standard rules today about randomly determining events as we go. Both Lanista’s will choose Gladiators as the Events are determined. Mercy and Freedom will be in effect.

Event 1
Beast Hunt
Crowd Mood: Violent- No modifiers to Mercy rolls. Just a straight 2d6.
Weather: Normal

Per the rules for this Event, I rolled up 3 animals to be hunted. Each of us get to choose a single light Gladiator to participate in the hunt. Here we see the limits of my Gladiator model collection as I have no exotic animal models to hunt. Instead, we will use 20-sided dice. We randomly placed the animals per the rules. Most of them ended up on Quintillius’ side of the arena. Boo.

In addition, we added some obstacles to make things more interesting. These were scattered in a somewhat equal way with one item in each quarter of the arena.

House of Quintillius
Arminius- Velite, Prisoner-of-War

House of Lupti Minor
Alexander the Elder- Laquerius, Slave

The crowd were excited as the beastmasters herded in three ostriches imported from inner Africa. Even on the North African Coast where Lupti Minor was, such creatures were exotic and strange.

Metallus was thankful that Ostriches tended not to be that dangerous. He nodded to the old Greek, Alexander. The man sprung forward and ran out to the cheers of the crowd. He put on a few rope tricks to help get them excited. On the other side of the Arena, the mustachioed German Arminius came forward. His Javelin tips glittered in the sun as he hoisted the weapons into the air.

With the introductions given, the hunt began!

Turn 1
Arminius put all of his CP into a Javelin attack on the nearest Ostrich. He hit the beast, but a Striking Defense negated 2 of his successes, and he reduced it only by 1 Pain. It still had 1 left. Alexander had to run towards the Ostriches to try and get into position. However, as he approaches, they scatter, spooked by the Gladiators.

Turn 2
Arminius stalks the fleeing bird. He sets up and uses his last javelin to easily bring it down. The crowd roars in approval as the big bird falls with a pair of Javelins stuck in it. Meanwhile, Alexander can’t get into a good position to attack either of the remaining birds. The birds turn and run from the old Greek, and they skirt the edge of the arena.

Turn 3
Arminius walks to the corpse of his kill and retrieves his Javelins. Finally, Alexander can attack one of the ostriches. He hefts his spear and throws it at the scared creature. His aim is true, and he downs the bird with a single throw! The crowd cheers his marksmanship!

The remaining bird moves to hide behind some rocks.

Turn 4
Arminius turns and moves towards the last bird. However, the rocks keep him from getting a throw at it this turn. Alexander is forced to reclaim his spear and turns, hoping the bird comes his way.

The bird runs towards the gate Arminius came in at, and tries to scramble over the wall. Too bad for it Ostriches are flightless. Whoever wins the next Initiative will likely get the kill, so a lot is riding on that next roll.

Turn 5
Alexander wins initiative. He walks forward carefully, checking his footing while he readies his spear. He puts all his Combat Pool into the throw, but the bird moves at the last moment and his spear clatters off the wall. Arminius grins as the spear lands in the sand. He tosses his Javelin, and three striking successes put it right through the poor bird’s small head.

The crowd roared in approval as the German theatrical pulled his Javelins from the beast’s head in a spray of blood. He then gives a Germanic war shout to taunt his Greek opponent. The grey-haired Alexander angrily retrieved his spear and shook it menacingly at the other Gladiator, who only jeered more.

The Editor grants victory in the event to the House of Quintillius.

Event 2
Tertiarri
Crowd Mood: Good Natured- All Mercy rolls have double Mods and Freedom is possible
Weather: Normal

House of Quintillius
Priapus- Retarius, Barbarian- Primus
Lucius- Provocateur, Desserter

House of Lupti Minor
Ordinarri- Secutor, Slave- Primus
Plano- Retarius, Slave

The slaves and workers quickly cleared the obstacles out of the arena. For this Event, the crowd wanted a good view of the action. The killing of the Ostriches had left them in a good mood and they were eager to see the results of the next Event.

Rumor had it that the Germanic Barbarian Priapus was going to fight. He had been a favorite target of the crowds anger, as he had been boisterous and dismissive of the Lupti Minor locals. Meanwhile, he was to face off against the popular Numidian Secutor Ordinarri. The crowd liked the Secutor’s valor and courage, even though he was yet to win a match. He had gone toe-to-toe against the fearsome Juggartha in the last Games. For that, the crowd recognized Ordinarri’s courage.

In the shadows of the Gates, the two Gladiator’s seconds prepared themselves. If the Primus fell, they would enter to fight. All ready, wagers and betting was in full swing. The bookies and the crowd were in high spirits as the Editor began the event.

Turn 1
Priapus stepped forward and began shouting insults at his foe in his thick Germanic language. His blonde locks practically glowed in the sun. Ordinarri turned and moved quickly so he could avoid the center column of the Arena.

Turn 2
Priapus stood where he was and unshouldered his net. He slowly began to swing it above his head. Ordinarri squared up with his foe and slowly stepped forward, cautious.

Turn 3
Priapus stepped forward and stepped into the throw of his net. He put 3 of his 4 Combat Pool into it in case he missed and was charged. Ordinarri decided to defend with 3 as well. The Retarius got a Striking Success, which he converted into two regular successes. Ordinarri only got 1 success, however his Servant Averonix had formerly been a secutor as well. His advice allowed Ordinarri to re-roll one dice in the Event, which he used now. He rolled a Striking Success, earning him 3. He knocked the net down to the sand in front of him with his shield.

With that, he confidently charged over the net and attacked with all his remaining CP, 1 from his Gladius, and 1 for charging, giving him three to attack with. Priapus, caught by surprise at missing threw his trident up to defend with 1 CP. The Secutor scored 1 hit, so the Retarius made an armor save. He failed, so Priapus’ Pain was reduced by 1.

Turn 4
The two Gladiator’s were locked in close, a place where the Retarius did not want to be. However, he gamely attacked the heavily armed Secutor with 2 CP. Ordinarri defended with 3. Both scored a single success, so a push.

Now, the Secutor returned the favor with 2 CP and it was Priapus’ turn Striking Success while the Secutor whiffed. Priapus sensed his chance and used his Striking Success to push his foe back and give himself some breathing room. The crowd cheered with growing enthusiasm.

Turn 5
Priapus dodged away from the Secutor. Ordinarri did not give chase, but instead backed-up and stood above the Retarius’ Net. This time, it was his turn to call out taunts to the German.

Turn 6
Priapus readied his Trident for a throw. It was risky as he could potentially lose his best remaining weapon, but he had little choice. He put all of his CP into the throw. Ordinarri prepared to defend with 3 CP, hoping he could turn and charge the Retarius next.

Priapus got Striking Successes, but converted them into a total of 4 successes. Ordinarri managed two regular successes. He had to depend on his armor for the two potential hits. Which he failed, reducing his Pain to 0. The trident struck home on his back as he whirled to defend himself from the quicker Gladiator.

However, he was just able to reach the German who was trying desperately to backpedal and draw his dagger. Ordinarri attacked with his 2 CP. He got a Striking Success and decided to try to knock the Retarius down. He smashed the Retarius with his shield, and he whirled back with his Pain reduced to 0 as well. However, he did not fall down.

Turn 7
Ordinarri won Initiative. He put 4 of his 5 CP into the attack. He sensed the cocky Priapus was on the ropes. The Barbarian defended with all of his 4 CP. Ordinarri got 2 success, while the Retarius got 3 successes. No hits, but also no Striking Successes for either Gladiator.

Priapus tried to break from combat, and successfully made an Initiative test. He stumbled backwards as fast as he could.

Turn 8
Priapus made a quick dash away from the Secutor, hoping to be able to scamper around behind him and reclaim his Net and Trident from the Arena sands. Ordinarri could not turn around fast enough in his heavier armor, and got hung up near the center column.

Turn 9
Ordinarri won Initiative again! This time he was able to turn and charge the Retarius again. He put in 4 CP and +1 for charging, and held onto one to counter attack/defend. Priapus prepared to defend himself with his dagger using all of his 4 CP. 3 Successes for Ordinarri and 1 for Priapus. The Retarius saved 1 hit with his Manica, but the other got through.

The hit knocked down Priapus and wounded him. In his turn, the boastful German asked for Mercy by raising two fingers to the crowd. The Editor looked to the Crowd. They were in Good Nature and the light Retarius had been defeated by a medium Secutor. Plus, he had valiantly defended himself with a dagger! They were suitably impressed by his efforts to spare him.

Turn 10
Priapus staggered to his feet, and slouched out of the arena in defeat. Meanwhile, his second Lucius entered the arena and slowly advanced. He was playing for time as he knew the Secutor would be growing tired soon. To conserve strength, Ordinarri simply waited.

Turn 11
Again, Lucius slowly stepped forward, attempting to stay out of charge range. Ordinarri only waited. Meanwhile, the crowd grew restless.

Turn 12
Lucius saw the Secutor conserving his strength, and boldly walked into charge range. He called out for Ordinarri to come and fight him. The Secutor decided to oblige him and charged in. There was no finesse in the assault, just metal on metal.

Ordinarri decided to use all 5 CP and +1 for charging. Since Lucius had used his turn, he defended with 3 and kept 1 CP to parry with. The two Gladiator’s shields crashed together with a crowd satisfying crunch. Neither man got the upper hand in their initial charge.

Turn 13
Lucius decided to test his opponent and attacked with 2 CP +1 from his Gladius, saving 2 for defense. Ordinarri decided to defend with 4 CP, and kept his Gladius CP to counter attack or Parry. Again, swrods and shields clanged together, but no advantage was gained by either.

Ordinarri counter-attacked as he had planned, and Lucius defended with 2 CP. Lucius scored a Striking Success on Defense and decided to convert it into a disarm attempt against the Secutor’s Gladius. Ordinarri scored 0 successes. The Secutor then failed his Initiative test, and his Gladius went flying from his hand as the crowd applauded the deft move by the veteran.

Turn 14
As Lucius maneuvered his Gladius away, Odinarri felt the fatigue sap his strength. Ordinarri knew that his opponent was relatively fresh and more experienced then he was.

Lucius decided to press his attack by using 2 CP +1 from his own Gladius, and holding onto 2 for defense. Ordinarri Defended with 2 CP and saved 1 for parries or countering. Lucius scored 1 striking success, which Ordinarri parried, but the result of the re-roll was another 6! Lucius decided to go Past His Guard, and try to score one hit. Ordinarri rolled a 4 on his save, and the Past His Guard allowed the strike to hit him. Ordinarri went down.

On his turn, he decided to raise his two fingers and ask for Mercy instead of continuing. The crowd was in high spirits after such a spirited combat. They were suitably impressed and allowed Ordinarri to live.

Turn 15
Two Gladiator’s had been defeated, but the Event wasn’t over yet. The crowd cheered wildly as Plano the Retarius entered the arena to challenge Lucius. The Provacatuer confidently strode towards his new challenger. Plano gamely jogged forward, his net twirling.

Turn 16
Lucius again walked forward. He knew he was too far away to charge the nimble Retarius. He prepared to defend himself from a net.

However, Plano instead rushed forward and swept out with his Trident as he approached. He put in 2 CP +1 for charging. Lucius put in 3 to Defend, and saved 1 to parry or counter and his Gladius to counter.

Plano rolled 0 successes, while Lucius scored 1 Striking defense. He decided to try and knock the Retarius down. However, the Retarius jumped the sweep of the Provacatuer’s shield. However, the two were now locked in combat.

Lucius followed up with his Gladius and remaining CP, while Plano defended with 1 CP. Lucius got 2 Successes, and Plano got a Striking Success to cancel any potential hits. The crowd cheered at the display of martial prowess.

Turn 17
Plano failed to break from combat, and instead, attacked with 2 CP using his Net up close. He reserved 1 to defend later. Lucius decided to defend with 2, and saved 2 to parry/counter and reserved his Gladius. He knew he had an advantage up close and intended to use it. No one scored any successes.

Now, Lucius counter-attacked with 2 CP and +1 from his Gladius. Plano used 1 to defend. Lucius scored 3 successes, while Plano got 2. Not bad. The Retarius then managed to take the hit on his armored shoulder pad and avoid losing any Pain.

Turn 18
This time, Lucius decided to press his attack before the Retarius could run away from him. He put 3 CP into the attack +1 from his Gladius and held 1 in reserve. Plano had to defend with at least 2. Again, they both scored equal successes.

Plano again tried to break away, but Lucius kept him locked. So, the Retarius attacked again with his Net up close to entangle his foe. However, Lucius easily ducked the attack.

Turn 19
So far, both Gladiators were at full Pain. However, the Provacatuer had the advantage as the fighting was up close and personal. Again, Lucius put 3 CP +1 from the Gladius in. Plano’s luck could not hold forever. Plano used 2 CP to defend again. This time, two success and a striking from Lucius vs. Plano’s 1 success. Lucius tried to knock down the Retarius again. The hit drew blood, reducing Plano 1 Pain, but he was also knocked down by the follow-up shield bash from Lucius. The crowd began to chant for Lucius.

Plano failed to get up in the recovery phase.

Turn 20
The cheers of the crowd sent adrenaline through Lucius and he avoided fatigue. Seeing his opponent on the ground Lucius attacked again with 3 CP +1 from his Gladius and held onto 1. Plano used all his CP to defend. Again, Plano got his shoulder guard up and took a Gladius shot squarely on it. The ring of metal on metal rang through the arena.

Plano failed to get up in his turn, so crawled away.

In the Recovery Phase, the Retarius did get up, using his Trident as a support.

Turn 21
Again, Lucius staved off fatigue.

Lucius turned to the newly risen Gladiator, and charged in leading with his sword. He put 3 CP +1 for his Gladius and +1 for charging. Plano again defended with 3. One success from the Gladius snuck through, and Plano attempted to save on his armor again. This time, his Manica wasn’t enough and he was reduced to Pain 0.

Plano tried to break away from the medium Gladiator, but failed.

Turn 22
This time, the exertion started to tell on Lucius, and his CP was reduced by 1 due to Fatigue.

Sensing his advantage running out, Lucius moved to settle this all at once. He put in all of his CP on the attack, which would be 4. Plano, decided to defend with only 2 and kept one back. The two Gladiator’s successes cancelled each other out.

Plano counter-attacked. This could be his chance to actually hurt his foe. However, he failed to gain a success as Lucius stepped away from his wild Trident swing.

Turn 23
Lucius fights off any further Fatigue.

Lucius repeats his meat-grinder like attack. 2CP +1 for the Gladius and 1 in reserve. Plano uses 2 to defend, and 1 he holds onto. This time, Lucius’s sword and shield strike home. He knocks Plano flat and Downs him.

In his turn, Plano decides to hold up the two fingers in submission. Lucius turns to the crowd and asks for their guidance. They applaud the display of martial prowess and grant Mercy to Plano.

In addition, the crowd considers granting Freedom to Lucius for his valiant display of martial prowess, but the roll falls short. Instead, they praise him and throw flowers onto the floor of the arena.

The crowd chants Lucius’s name as he slowly circles the arena and roars in triumph. His fellow Gladiators, from both schools acknowledge his accomplishment with a salute. It is clear that the House of Quintillius is the victor in this event. Surely, the exploits of the Provacatuer Lucius will be the talk of Lupti Minor for the coming weeks.

Event 3
Noxii Chase
Weather: Normal
Crowd Mood: Normal

In this event, the 4 Heavy Gladiators will be facing 5 Noxii. Noxii aare simple criminals and scum with nor training and given swords to defend themselves. No one seriously expects them to survive nor wants them too. Their blood is simply to appease the bloodlust of the crowd and show off the skills of the Gladiators.

The Noxii will be played by unpainted Gladiators! Scandalous. They are randomly deployed in the Arena, and this time most of them are closer to the side of House Lupti Minor! Yes! Noxii act somewhat randomly.

House of Quintillius
Longinus- Hoplomacchus, Prisoner-of-War
Juggartha- Murmillo, Desserter

House of Lupti Minor
Mediocrates- Samnite, Slave
Minoris- Murmillo, Slave

The Noxii convicts were herded into the arena by soldiers. They milled about the center of the arena nervously. A few were openly weeping, and crowd jeered and booed them. A few of the spectators even hurled rocks and vegetables at them.

When the Gladiator’s were announced, the crowd went nuts. They knew this would prove to be a bloody spectacle. What better way to finish of an exciting afternoon of Games?

Turn 1
The Gladiator’s emerge from the gate and begin to move towards their Noxii victims. Longinus hefts his spear and tosses it at the closest Noxii. He uses all 4 CP while the Noxii defends with 2. He draws first blood as his victim is skewered and killed.

Two Noxxi try to charge past Mediocrates. He divides his CP up to defend. They manage to overwhelm his guard and reduce him by 1 Pain. They run past him towards the gate. The crowd jeers at the Gladiator’s wound.

{b]Turn 2[/b]
The Noxii go first.

One Noxii approaches and begins to shout and taunt Minoris, but he is unmoved. However, the distraction is enough as one of his opponents attacks him from behind and outside his combat arc. He can not try to parry or use Striking Successes. However, he can use all his CP to defend. Minoris manges to dodge aside a tangle the Noxii into close combat.

Minoris is next, and he tries to cut down the Noxii he locked into combat. He puts 3 CP +1 from his Gladius and holds 1 to defend. The Noxii has no CP left after his charge attack. Minoris gets four success and slashes his victim up into little pieces. The crowd cheers their approval.

Longinus sprints forward and pulls his spear from his shish-kabobbed Noxii victim.

Mediocrates turns and charges the Noxii taunting Minoris. He puts in 3CP +1 for charging. The Noxii defends with 2 CP. He reduces the Noxii 1 Pain.

Juggartha jogs across the Arena as the Noxii are all on the other side.

Turn 3
Minoris turns and charges into the Noxii that Mediocrates is fighting. He puts 2 CP +1 for Gladius and +1 for charging into the attack. He holds back 2. The Noxii defends with 2, and manages to counter the Gladiator’s attacks.

The Noxii fighting Minoris and Mediocrates tries to break away but fails. The other two remaining Noxii flee around the edge of the Arena.

Longinus and Juggartha try to chase down the fleeing Noxii by cutting across the arena and intercepting them.

Mediocrates attacks the Noxii he and Minoris are tangling with. He puts in all his 4 CP into the attack. The Noxii has no dice left to defend with. He is reduced to Pain 0.

Turn 4
Longinus hefts his spear once again and throws it at the nearest Noxii. He uses all his 4 CP in the attack. The Noxii tries to defend with 2. The Noxii manages to knock the spear down into the sand. Longinus draws his Gladius.

Juggartha charges the Noxii that Longinus failed to kill. He attacks with 4 CP + 1 gladius and +1 charging. The Noxii has nothing to defend with. He chops the Noxii’s head off and then shield bashes the rest of the body into pulp.

Minoris attempts to finish off his Noxii. He uses 4 CP and the Noxii defends with 2, but it isn’t enough. Minoris chops his leg off, and then smashes his head open with the edge of his shield.

The remaining Noxii turns to Juggartha and begins to shout and jibber in terror at him. The Murmillo simply stares the Noxii down into silence.

Mediocrates tries to sprint to the last Noxii but he is too far away.

Turn 5
Juggartha turns and charges the final Noxii. He manages to Down the last Noxii.

Minoris moves forward.

Mediocrates moves forward, and finished off the last Noxii by stabbing him through the heart.

Juggartha exchanged words with Mediocrates for stealing his kill. However, the crowd was roaring with approval at the bloody show. Mutilated and dead Noxii littered the arena and the crowd was pleased. The Editor deemed the House of Lupti Minor the winner of the final event.

With that, the Gladiators from both schools gathered in the arena as the attendants cleared it of debris. The Editor bestowed the laurels of victory to the House of Quintillius for the Games. The crowd and the fellow Gladiator’s applauded the decision.

I was trying to find my link to the rules for The Games: Blood and Spectacle and my search came across a couple posts about it on Boardgame Geek!

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/179556/games-blood-and-spectacle

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/summary/thing/179556

The second one totally called me out on my rampant Typos, but also has some complimentary things to say. I was pretty excited to see these, like I had some how "made it"!

I painted a Thraex and a Sagitar gladiator.

A Thraex in yellow and a Sagitar in green.

Sagitar's didn't even really exist as a Gladiator type. However, there are many documented cases of bows and arrows being used in the arena, they were mostly against animals and not other people. So, what we call Sagitar's for gaming purposes was probably just a venetor (beast hunter) in the Roman days.

Two dismounted Equites for The Games: Blood and Spectacle:

Equites would fight ritualized battles starting on horseback. However, it seems that once one was dismounted then the opponent would also dismount. Until I get their mounted versions painted, these guys will make good Noxi and Damnatii.

I have also been making slow progress on the chariots. The Charioteers are done, one chariot is close to being complete, and the second is base coated. I am unsure how to baset ehm though. Any ideas?

More importantly, I finally managed to touch brush to model for the first time in 2016! Hopefully this painting thing will be a new trend, but I am not optimistic.

Oh look! A chariot. This one is from the Old Glory Gladiator Wars range. It was originally a 4 horse chariot but it was way to big and I wanted a sleeker looking machine, plus the larger version took up too much space.

I have been wargaming to two decades and I have never painted horse before. Anyone have any idea how I should base these things?

Wow look at this!

A second chariot. The riders barely fit int his little racing chariot also from Old Glory. I think it was from their Gladiator Wars line, but I am not sure.

Once i figure out how to base both of the Chariots for game use, and finish up the basing I think I will have what I need for all types of events in the main rules. I am looking forward to trying these out in game!

Metallus, the Lanista of the Leptis Minoris Gladiator Ludus was happy to be on the road. He had managed to secure a contract with a up-and-coming politician in Sabartha on the Libyan coast. He and his men had just arrived in the outskirts of the town. His new patron put them up in a nice villa not far from the small arena. Perhaps he and his men would be rid of that scheming Quintillius now that they were out of Leptis Minoris.

Metallus was in good spirits. He left the villa, crossed the marketplace and ventured to investigate the small arena his troupe had been booked to perform at. It was a mix of stone and wood, and relatively new construction. The facilities seemed adequate, and he looked forward to the Games. They were to celebrate the incorporation of North Africa into Roman rule. Games were going to be held across the city on the same day.

Metallus’ spirits were high. He met with the Editor to begin to draft the program for the day’s events, and suddenly Metallus’ mood dropped. By Jupiter, what was Quintillius doing here? His spirits dropped lower when he realized that his opponents for the day would be House Quintillius yet again. He thought he had left them in Leptis Minor! However, the need for Gladiators was so great, that Ludus from across North Africa were being drawn in. Why did it have to be Quintillius again?

With his spirits dampered he returned to the Villa and worked his Gladiators hard until the day of the big event. This time, he wanted the laurels of victory.

Welcome back to another exciting spectacle of Gladiators using The Games: Blood and Spectacle rules. We will be using the standard rules for determining Events and Gladiator usage. I look forward to seeing what the day has in store for our champions of the Arena!

Historical Re-enactment
We rolled up our first event and got a 6. Spectacle! Maybe I got those chariots painted up just in time! We rolled again and got…. 6! That means a Historical Re-enactment. Oh no, those use 1d6+2 Gladiators per side and go until everyone is OOA. This could be a blood bath to start The Games! I hope the crowd isn’t blood-thirsty. We roll and get the Mood of the Crowd is Normal and the Weather is normal. That could have been real ugly!

This battle is intended to fancifully represent the troops of the Numidian king Massinissa fighting with the Romans at Zama. This is to represent he battle by placing a light gladiator on the wings, 2 mediums inside, and a single Heavy in the center. This represents the battle lines and deployment at Zama. House Quintillius is the Romans.

House of Leptis Minor:
Alexander the Eldar
Regulus the Dimachaerus
Minoris the Murmillo
Ordinarri the Secutor
Plano the Retarius

House Quintillius
Priapus- Barbarian Retarius
Lucius- Provacteur
Juggartha- Murmillo
Haram the Barber- Arbelas
Arminius- Velite

This will leave both Houses very low on available models! Plus, there is a big risk for a lot of dead Gladiators at the end of this Event!

Turn 2
As the opening moves unfold and the Gladiators approach. Just like Zama, the fight starts with a missile barrage as Plano and Alexander throw at the Men of Quitillius. I thought it was the Romans who closed with a Pillum barrage? Alexander heaves his spear and manages to injure the approaching Haram the Barber, reducing him to Pain 1.

Turn 4
Minoris charges Haram the Barber, but fails to cause any injuries. Juggartha charges using Berzerk Charge. His ferocious attack draws blood on Minoris! Ordinarri counter-charges Juggartha. He parries away the Nubian’s crazed swings and manages to draw Juggartha’s blood!

From the edge off the battle, Priapus throws his net and manages to entangle Minoris!

Turn 5
Lucius charges into Alexander, but the wily old gladiator pushes him back with an unexpected chest bump across his shield followed by a dagger to the forearm!

Regulus charges Priapus and knocks him down and reduces him to 0 Pain. Ouch!

Plano rushes Haram to relieve the pressure on Minoris. His trident swing goes wide, but he manages to get his arm guard up in time to counter-Haram’s Arbela that pings loudly off Plano’s shoulder guard.

Juggartha and Haram team-up on the entangled Minoris, who gamely tried to fight them off. Minoris is reduced to Pain 0. The crowd is roaring in approval as they begin to sense blood! Ordinarri presses his attacks the distracted Juggartha and injures the fearsome Gladiator yet again! Juggartha is at Pain 0!

Minoris rips the net off of him and tosses it aside. Priapus gets up.

The pennies represent scattered weapons such as spears, tridents, and nets.

Turn 6
Juggartha manages to nimbly spring away from Minoris and Ordinarri! In return, Lucius turns and charges into the side of the Secutor. However, the Gladiator from Leptis Minor meets him and manages to use his flashing sword work to injure Lucius and reduce him to Pain 0!

Alexander the ledar swats away a Javelin from Arminius, then calmly lasso’s and entangles Priapus!

Haram fights off Plano, and attacks Minoris, who bashes him away with his shield and reduces him to Pain 0!

Ordinarri turns and clashes with Lucius, who takes a shot to his armored breastplate. Minoris lands a punishing blow on Haram, and the man is wounded and knocked down. The crowd roars in approval!

Entangled, Priapus tries feebly strike at Regulus, but misses. He leaves himself open and the medium Gladiator slashes and wounds him. However, he can not follow-up and seal the deal.

In the Recovery Phase, haram and Priapus both raise the two-fingers of the Missio. The crowd approves of their performance, and they are spared! Things look bad for Quintillius’ men!

Turn 7
Eager after defeating Priapus, Regulus charges the bleeding Juggartha. The Murmillo proves why he is so feared as he easily swats away the Medium gladiator with his shield and downs him into the sands of the Arena. Juggartha ruthlessly turns and puts Regulus Out-of-the-Fight, caught in the moment, the crowd bays for blood as Regulus is dispatched! Ouch!

Alexander is appalled at the death of his fellow Gladiator, and lassos Juggartha easily.

Lucius and Ordinarri clash, but a timely parry keeps Ordinarri away from getting hit.

Minoris charges the heavily bleeding Juggartha and smashes him to the ground with a flurry of attacks. He is out-of-the-fight. Plano follows up and forces a Mercy check on the popular Murmillo. Juggartha passes and is allowed to live for another Games.

Turn 8
Lucius knows his time is limited and that he must finish Ordinarri. He attacks with everything he has, but the Secutor manages to use his Gladius and shield to parry the assault.

As expected, Minoris plows into Lucius and takes him down with a series of powerful blows. The Provacateur raises his two fingers in the Missio. However, the crowd is disappointed in the “Romans” being defeated and Lucius is executed in the arena by Minoris.

Turn 9
Plano charges Arminius, but the Velite pushes the Retarius back and draw blood with his dagger. He falls back and tosses a Javelin that misses the mark.

Minoris has the range and angle and charges the last “roman”. He manages to knock off two Pain, but Arminius’ helmet absorbed two ringing hits.

Turn 10
Arminius scrambles away from the Murmillo, and turns and charges Alexander. The clashes reduces the Greek to a single point of Pain. The Greek counters, but again comes away worse from the Velites flashing dagger.

Plano charges in, and this time takes the Velite Out-of-the Fight. The crowd cheers the bravado of the last of Quintilluis’ gladiators acting boldly, and they chant for his survival.

Conclusion
The re-enactment of the Battle of Zama is over. This time, the Romans lost! The mend of Leptis Minoris are hailed the victors for the event!

Overall, this was a good look at how Combat Pool was a previous commodity. I was careful in how I spread and used it. I also tried hard to get higher type gladiators against lesser ones. Regulus a Medium against Priapus a Light, Minoris a heavy against Haram a medium, etc. My approach seemed to work for this one, but the cost was high on both sides!

For Quintillius’s picked men Juggartha survived his injuries from being taken Out-of-the-Fight, but acquired a limp, reducing his Move by 1. Arminius was not so lucky, and later died of his wounds. Lucius the Provacateur was killed in the arena. That means two Gladiators were lost to Quintillius.

The men of Leptis Minoris also lost a Gladiator. Regulus was killed in the arena by Juggartha! The Ludus of Leptis Minoris was down a couple of Gladiators previous to coming to Sabartha. Now, they were in rough shape.

Event 2- Beast Fight
To continue the theme of the Battle of Zama, the Editor brought in a small elephant for a Beast Hunt! Lupin Lupinius gave his trademark wolf howl as he entered the arena. On the other side, the plumed helmet of Longinus gleamed in the sunlight. The crowd roared in anticipation and began to chant the two gladiator’s names.

The weather and crowd mood did not change. Normal.

Turn 1
The beast started wandering closer to Longinus’ side of the arena. Right away the Hoplomacchus was able to charge at it and bring it into combat. However, the elephant swung its head and its tusks banged off of Longinus armor. However, he wasn;t so successful the next time, and the tusks reduced him to Pain 0! Lupin ran to try to cross the arena

Turn 2
The elephant moved away from the Hoplomacchus at a trot. He threw his spear at it and hit it once, for 1 Pain removed. Longinus drew his Gladius. Lupin also hit it with a Javelin.

Turn 3
The beast continued to move away from the Gladiators. Longinus jogged after it, while Lupin paralleled it. However, he was caught behind a column.

Turn 4
The elephant moved around the edge off the arena, but this time Longinus was able to charge it again. He managed to cut the beast deeply with his Gladius and it bellowed in Pain. Lupins final Javelin clattered off the wall of the arena as he missed the beast.

Turn 5
The badly injured beast stumbled away and egan bellowing at the Gladiators through its trunk. Lupin drew his dagger, but the trumpet like blasts from the elephant’s trunk caused him to freeze in fear. Unphased, Longinus rushed the beast again! He leapt into the air and delivered a killing blow straight through the hard skull of the creature, killing it dead!

Conclusion
Victory for Quintillius’ men! Victory for Longinus. It was a rocky start for the Hopplomachus, but he managed. It was a bit odd seeing a Heavy compete against a Light, but both Ludus’ ranks were thinned after the Historical Re-enactment.

Event 3- Single Combat
The final event of the day was to be a Gladiator duel between single combatants. From House Quintllius was Marcomanni. The huge barbarian hefted his axe and entered the ring. On the opposite side was the Nubian Samnite Mediocrates.

The crowd was eager to see some skill at arms. The re-enactment and beast fight had sated their thirst for bloodshed. Now, they were eager to see some skill with weapons.

Turn 1
The two Gladiators ran forward eager to do battle.

Turn 2
Marcomanni turned and moved behind a column, while Mediocrates slowed to a walk up the center.

Turn 3
Marcomanni came around the column, and Mediocrates turned to face him. The samnite was not in charge range, so he readied himself.

Turn 4
The Samnite moved backwards, to tempt the Barbarian forward. The Barbarian knew he couldn’t reach him so instead moved along the outside of the columns.

Turn 5
Mediocrates moved behind a column, where the axe-wielding Marcomanni could not get the charge on him.

Turn 6
The crowd was getting restless as the two Gladiators jockeyed for positioning. This time, the barbarian managed to get the drop on the Samnite! A deft blow from the haft of the Barbarians Ace reduced his Mediocrates Pain to 1.

He turned to face his foe. His counter-attack failed to hit, but he deflected a sneaky blow with his manica.

Turn 7
Now they were locked in and all eyes were on the two Gladiators. Mediocrates moved first by pulling his shield in tight and jabbing outward. The barbarian spun away and landed a swat across the back of the Samnite’s helmet, but he shook it off.

When Marcomanni countered, he managed to reduce the Samnite’s Pain by 1 more with a hook shot that went up under his shield.

Turn 8
Mediocrates attacks are again easily blocked. Marcomanni’s counters are not, and the Samnite is dazed. However, he manages to keep the other Gladiator from tripping him up.

Turn 9
Marcomanni follows-up his successes and pushes in for the kill. He continues to smack the poor Samnite in the grill of his helmet and dazes him further. His ears are ringing. However, he shakes away the dizziness and tries to counter.

He sees his chance and ferociously attacks back. Marcomanni manages to twist enough for his shoulder guard to take the hit. However, Mediocrates follows up with a quick upward jerk of his sword that catches the haft Marcomanni’s axe. The weapon spins through the air and lands in the sands behind him.

The crowd gets to its feet and applauds approvingly.

Turn 10
Mediocrates presses his success, but the Barbarian manages to avoid the jabbing blade. Dispensing with the loss of his axe, Marcomanni grabs the helmet of his opponent and smashes it into his own helmet in a vicious head-butt! The Samnite stumbles around on his feet, but is still standing.

Turn 11
Marcomanni is beginning to feel fatigued. He tries to disengage, but fails. The Samnite has kept him locked in close. He tries to grapple with the Nubian, but he knocks the barbarian’s hands away with his shield.

Mediocrates hits him with his sword, but he takes it on the Manica. While distracted, the Nubian pushes with his shield and knocks the big barbarian over.

He fails to get up.

Turn 12
Mediocrates pounces on the knocked downed Gladiator. However, Marcomanni manages to get his foot up and toss the Nubian into the dirt, downing him. Marcomanni crawls over and recovers his axe, but failed to get up.

Mediocrates decides to Burn a Combat Pool dice and return to Pain 1. However, he fails to get up.

Turn 13
Mediocrates is feeling Fatigue! He has 2 CP. However, he stumbles to his feet first, and jabs at the Gladiator on the ground. Marcomanni rolls away to avoid the attacks then stumbles to feet.

Turn 14
Marcomanni is feeling fatigued and is down to 2 CP. Mediocrates clumsily swings at the Barbarian. However, it is enough and he reduces him to 0 Pain. Marcomanni swings back, but he stops the axe with his shield.

Turn 15
Marcomanni can barely lift his axe anymore. He is so fatigued he is down to 1CP. Mediocrates presses the attack again, forcing the Barbarian to use his 1 CP to defend. Neither can land a telling blow.

Turn 16
The two swat pointlessly at each other.

Turn 17
Mediocrates also feels fatigue, and is down to 1 CP. In one last act of strength, he manages to bash away Marcomanni’s guard and strike him. He is wounds to 0CP and is considered Out of the Fight.

The crowd cheers the two warriors valiant battle! The crowd grants mercy to Marcomanni.

Conclusion
The House of Leptis Minor is declared the winners! Marcomanni is hardened by the battle and no longer feels the effects of Fear!

[i]The people of Sabartha cheer the remaining Gladiators of both Ludus as they come back to the Arena for a final salute and parade. The Edutor of the games presents Metallus the Laurels of Victory on a well fought day of Events.
