Round 1: Deathwing (Belial in Crusader, MSU of Terminators, 2 Whirlwinds, Drop Pod Tactical Squad)
Missions: Center objective, Table Quarters
This match wasn’t too difficult to manage. Coupled with a couple of lucky breaks, and my opponent not being too familiar with his army, I was able to pull out a strong win. I tabled him on turn 4. A couple of interesting notes would be that he used his Land Raider to ram a Ghost Ark. It didn’t do anything, but parked in front of a Voltaic Staff. Also, Belial and friends failed a 5” charge in front of my Warrior blob. Doomsday Arks, had a field day on the Terminators, and 60+ non-blast weapons firing into Belial ended that problem. Ultimately, I had both mission objectives, as well as first blood, slay the warlord, and linebreaker.
Score: 10- 0
Round 2: White Scars (Khan + 2 HQ’s on bikes, Bikes with melta/grav weapons.)
Missions: Deployment Objective, Line Breaker
Oh my, how painful this was. I faced a friend who I tabled at our last tournament match up when he was Imperial Fists, and I was Alpha Legion with Orks. This time I had an estimated 40+ bikes in my face on turn one. Both he and I were astonished at my abysmal dice rolling. I honestly cannot recall a worse performance on my end.
On his first round, he knocked off on Particle Shredder and a couple of warriors, so things were looking alright. My first go, I fired everything into the bike squad that had all of his HQ choices. A Shredder, 2 Doomsday Cannons, and an unholy torrent of gauss didn’t kill anything. I knocked all three of his bosses down to one or two wounds, but killed nothing.
Turn 2 was just as atrocious. He destroyed half of my vehicles, and a chunk of my infantry. I managed to whittle away at a couple of bike units as he encircled my host before I had even left my deployment zone. I failed a 4” charge from my Warlord into his HQ. The following round I lost my Warlord, and the rest of the Warriors. Naturally, he didn’t pass his Reanimation Protocols. My Deathmarks did manage to arrive and killed a majority of a bike squad, only to be charged and have one survive until round 5. The Arks and everything else was not as fortunate. Good match for my opponent, there was as much laughter as there was groaning.
Score: 1-10
Round 3: Nidzilla (Swarmlord, Venomthrope, Zoanthrope, 40 Genestealers, 4 carnifexes, and Trygon. Oh, and a flying gribbly.)
Missions: Slay the Warlord, Relic
Rough, but manageable; this game was purely damage control. My opponent tosses the Trygon and 30 Genestealers into reserves, then lined the rest of his army up to advance his tide of teeth and gribbly bits. When his reserves came in, and they all came in at the beginning, I was able to take out almost all of the Genestealers. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stop all of the carnifexes while I was shooting down the ‘Stealers. He ended up tearing through my army once he made it home, and I can’t remember a full breakdown of the match, but I can offer a few quips. I managed to kill the Swarmlord, Zoanthrope, 40 Genestealers, and heavily wounded the Carnifexes. The Deathmarks popped up behind the Swarmlord, and killed him before he could touch anything. My Overlord tanked 15 wounds from his flyer’s template weapon. His Carnifex rolled a 5 on the Mindshackle test, and promptly stomped the Overlord in an assault, followed by the Lord failing his Reanimation Protocols…again. As rough as it sounds, this game was pretty close actually. It went to the last round, and I had a unit of Warriors running for the relic. The only thing stopping them was a Carnifex with only 1 wound remaining. If I had been able to drop it, I could have claimed the relic, and won 8-6. Alas, I was not fortunate.
Score: 5-9
Thoughts:
I had a good balance between a solid win, and crushing defeat, and then a pretty close fight at the end. It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to attend an event, and the game is a bit different now. Not just in rules, but mostly in army composition. I fought Deathwing, a T5 army that was ridiculously quick, and then a monstrous creature heavy army. Not only that, but I glanced at the other matches after my rounds. There was a Daemon summoning army, an Eldar army with 2 Wraithknights, 1 Imperial Knight, and 3 Wave Serpents. Not to mention the winner of the day, a Necron list that was a copypasta of the internet lists. I believe in his list there was an Overlord in chariot, 3 Nightscythes, 2 Barges, 2 minimal Deathmark units with Despairteks, and a Destroyer Lord with Wraiths.
As much as I love the Stalkers, I am under the impression that another large squad of Deathmarks would benefit me more. I could drop a couple of Riptides/Wraightknights, or it could have taken out the four Carnifexes that I encountered. I’m interested in playing with some Immortals as well. If I use Immortals with Gauss, I will have an easier time with higher toughness armies, and not give up that sweet sweet gauss. Regardless, it’s time to go back to the drawing boards. I have a lot to reflect on. I’ll take some time, and then I’ll harass you all for input on a few lists over in the other Subforum.
