Welcome to my blog! Since it's reached a fair old length, and a lot of the earlier stuff is a bit rubbish compared to where I'm at now, I've decided to use the OP simply to showcase a few highlights of my recent work, which you will find spans dozens of games and typically has no direction beyond what I fancy painting at any given moment! My current ongoing projects are an Imperial 40k army, a loose collection of Age of Sigmar forces and an ever-growing collection of Marvel and DC miniatures from Knight Models, but you'll see plenty more than that in here! I'm always looking to improve, so any feedback, comments, suggestions and gallery votes are much appreciated!

I also do a bit of commission work, so if you like what you see and want to add some of my work to your own collection, see the link in my signature or PM me on here! /shameless plug

From about page 27 onwards, I don't focus on armies so much and there's a little mix of everything. Lots of character minis, small squads, and some commission work as well. Enjoy!

Any comments, discussion, questions or criticism are more than welcome, as are any votes for the images in my gallery. Cheers for looking in, I hope you like what you see!

Original OP
Spoiler:
Welcome, folks, to my blog, where I'll be posting mostly finished minis, along with some occasional fluff, hobby musings and any other wargaming odds and ends that come along. I honestly have very little idea where this is going, as I tend to jump from one project to another on a whim, and as such have an awful lot of half-finished projects, things on a 'I'll get to it one day' list, and more asides than you can shake a stick at.

As for what you can expect to see, I collect several 40k armies, alongside Infinity, Malifaux and Deadzone, so there will be a rather random collection of stuff thrown along here, some of which you can see in my gallery (any votes appreciated, it's always good to know what you guys think of my minis) You can expect a lot of conversion work as I really do enjoy personalising models and attempting to make my middling paintjobs look a little more interesting. Most of my paintwork goes for a very grim and gritty feel instead of lots of highlights and clean lines, so if they look dark, they're meant to!

To kick things off, how about a little 40k? The impending arrival of Space Hulk has got me in something of an obsessive state over my various Terminator-related projects, namely Deathwing and a TDA-Heavy Blood Angels force, both of which are currently undergoing army-wide repaints as I've got better since I painted them.

First up, the Boys in Not-Quite-White, the Deathwing:
I've gone for a very grmiy look for these guys, as I can't see the bone-white armour staying clean in combat, even with the best maintenance!

A Dreadnought, converted from an AOBR Dread using various bits and bobs and a little green stuff.

Dark Vengeance Assault Cannon wielder:

A Knight-master, successor to the one interned in the above Dreadnought:

More minis in the galllery.

Up next, Blood Angels, painted up to round out the contingent from Spave Hulk. To this end, they've been fairly heavily converted to mesh with the great and characterful SH ones.

I went with a cleaner look for these, but unfortunately, the pics have made them look a little flat. Especially the legs are more detailed in real life.

And to round out this first post, some Infinity, namely some PanOceania Military Order troops. I won't be doing any more of these until Operation Icestorm arrives, so it will be mostly 40k after these. AGain, they've come out a little dark, I'm afraid.

Again, there's a few more in the gallery.

That's all for today, chaps. Any and all feedback is appreciated, and I am still endeavouring to get a better lighting setup so in future the pictures should be better. Let me know what you think!
Thanks for reading.

I'm gonna have to look these over a bit more when I have more time. I like the grittiness of the marine stuff, down and dirty deathwing. Freehand dark angel symbol on dread is solid.

I'm not sure what you did to make it that way, but your first blood angel terminator is downright menacing. Something about the pose and paintwork just oozes menace, excellent

I definitely like the Pan-O colors, I think there's a sinister side to that faction if you dig deep enough, so your colors work for me

Yeah, that first BA Termie is one of my favourite Terminators I have (out of about 40!), and such a simple conversion. It's just a turned waist, one arm forward, the other back, but it changes the dynamic of the model completely, I think.

Lots to post today, so let's get to it!

A box arrived this morning...

Eager to get going, I cracked it open straight away. First impressions did not decieve, the quality of everything in there is utterly excellent. The figures you've probably all heard are great, but the tiles and counters bear mentioning, as they are very nicely detailed and varied, many have embossed detailing, and they look like they will stand up to good amounts of gameplay usage. I haven't got any pics of the tiles or extras, but if anyone wants some I can take a few.

Now for the minis. There's a bunch of individual shots in my gallery, but for now, a few of my favourites:

There's no denying this guy is awesome. Great pose, packed with detail, he just looks ready to take on an army and probably win.

"Sir, I found this spinal column. Anyone lost one?"

"In the Grim Darkness of the 41st millenium, shoelaces still come untied at the most awkward moments."

And the Genestealers, which were kind of a surprise. I had always seen them as just 'the other guys', the ones I have to paint so the Termies can shoot them. But then I opened the box, and was more than a little impressed. They're varied, dynamic, and just ooze as much character as the Blood Angels in a creepy-looking-alien sort of way.

This guy crawling down a wall to attack an unwary Termie is one of my favourites...

And then there's this guy, the Broodlord boss Genestealer

He's big enough that he towers over the Termies, and can look a Dreadnought in the eye-slit with easy. Atop a mound of skulls that is so gloriously grimdark it goes from terrible to awesome, and holding another just for the hell of it, he's not a guy you'd want to meet in an alleyway, dark or otherwise!

But that's enough unboxing, time for some actual hobbying.

First up, the Dread I mentioned yesterday. He's come out in the photos a little flatter than he is in reality, but I might add some more freehand/squiggles to break up the flat areas:

And the Sanguinary Priest. I think I forgot to turn Macro on for this so he's a little blurred, but you get the idea. I'll get some better shots of him soon.

And the Blood Angel Revival 2014 so far:

Here's a comparison shot (although the lighting isn't great, as the sun went in and then the battery died before I could retake) of the old (right) and new (left) BA schemes, you can hopefully see how the new one is a richer, deeper colour compared to the much flatter old one.

And for a parting shot, Dread-Vengers Assemble:

Now, I'm off to blast some Genestealers. Keep the comments/criticism coming, guys!

Cheers, good to see you drop in here.

I'm kind of torn on the Genestealer scheme. I've never painted any Nids before so it'll be a learning curve either way. Part of me thinks I should just stick to the normal scheme, but I also think they'd look cool in an Alien-style scheme as well, and that would be easier as well, I think. Time will tell, I might get one done for testing tomorrow in the unlikely event I get bored of Termies! I also intend to grab some AVP minis when they hit retail and do a reskinnned SH game as well as AVP himself.

So far I've played two test games of SH, and the first was an absolute slaughter for the Termies, they only lasted about 6 rounds. In the next game, I managed to hold out a little longer and pull out a win thanks to more cautious playing and better use of the amazingly good Heavy Flamer. Burn the Xenos!

If your going to get alien aliens you might as well stay with the classic look. (if I get my mits on a copy of space hulk I'll be going for a slightly darker version of the classic look)

This might be of interest to you for your stealers and aliens when you get them.

Cheers, folks!

@Joe: I'm going to try an Alien and 40k style Genestealer and see which comes out best. I'll be going for Grimdark freakiness whichever I pick though!

@Azazelx: thanks! My conversions have come nowhere near the awesomeness that is SH, but I think they're more interesting than bog standard Termies

@40kFSU: thanks! To me, Dreads are more 40k than anything, and really fun models to work with.

Update incoming later when the camera has recharged.

Very nice, AoV, you'll be showing me up with stuff like that! I've just taken a look through your blog, your SH and DZ stuff is coming along very nicely. Can't think why I haven't seen it before!

So, the promised update and the start of the Space Hulk painting. He's the best he is at what he does, and what he does best ain't pretty...

Brother Claudio, the last survivor of his squad, and a man with serious Genestealer issues...

I probably won't get to use him in 40k, as I can't fit him in the list without buying a bunch more termies for an Assault Squad, but he's a very nice mini to paint up and will, I'm sure, be put to good use carving up Nids in the Space Hulk!

As always, any feedback is welcome. I think I've managed to get the lighting sorted as well, so any thoughts on that would be appreciated as otherwise I think this will be my go-to background in future.

Thanks for the comments so far! Next up will be a couple of Genestealer tests and maybe some more Blood Angels.

Thanks guys!

@AoV: cheers. I think it took about 2 hours start to finish of painting/drying time. I could probably have spent longer on it, but I think he looks good as is, and agreed, it is a great mini. The damaged armour is really cool.

@Nev: yeah, they really do leave even the Wolf Guard/Deathwing ones in dust! I'm kind of hoping the BA get a new unique termie kit with their new codex so I can add a few more non-generic ones, but that would take me close to having more BA Termies than Deathwing!

@ckig: there's always something! Good spot, I'll fix that soon!

Yeah, they are pretty nice, everything in DV is rather amazing. The Chosen were some of my favourites to paint up.

UPDATE TIME!

Genestealer prototype paintschemes. I can safely conclude that the Alien-inspired scheme will not be happening. Here's the test model:

As you can see, it's just too flat, and to be honest about it, it doesn't really look painted at all. An almost-black figure on a black and grey board is just going to get lost. So the classic scheme it is, of a sort:

Again, this is just a test, so the details haven't all been filled in yet. Strangely, there seems to be a blue tint on all these shots, which didn't show up on the camera. But you get the idea. Purple carapace, blue skin. Simple, but quite effective, I think. It's the same colours as the studio scheme, but reversed and lightened somewhat. I think, unless anyone has any better suggestions, I'll be going with this one.

And now the main event: Brother Denio, expert marksman and covered in more purity seals than some Chaplains!

I think he's come out pretty nicely, and while the tint doesn't show it, his colour does match my other BA. More angles in my gallery. I like the blue gems on this, I might go back and re-do Claudio's gems in blue as well, as it stands out much better than the purple and is easier to paint to boot!

Something that had to be done:
"Do you feel lucky, Xenos?"

"Noooooo!"

And finally, as there's more to life than Space Hulk (there is? ), a Blood Angels Sergeant. This is the first Power Armoured model I've done in the new scheme, and as such was a bit of a learning curve. I think it's come out ok barring a few touchups on the freehand that need doing. As always, let me know what you think of it:

Thanks for reading, and keep the feedback coming! This whole blogging malarkey is very motivating! I'm afraid there won't be any new pics until Friday/Saturday as the camera is away, but I'll keep you posted on my progress and answer any questions/comments.

Like I said, can't do pics until the weekend, but today I worked through 3 more Termies. If I can keep up the same rate of productivity tomorrow, it should be a massively pic-filled update come Saturday!

I might start work on some more Stealers, as I can knock out they scheme in about as much time as it takes the wash to dry on Termies.

++UPDATE DETECTED++
++SQUAD LORENZO DEPLOYED TO INVESTIGATE++

Yep, here we go, with a fairly large update on what I've been working on over the last few days. as mentioned the other day, I've got through a fair few SH minis, so I'll start with them.

Sergeant Lorenzo

I might go back and redo the power sword effect, as I'm not 100% on it.

Brother Zael

Brother Scipio (not technically a member of this squad, but the mini was too cool to leave)

Brother Goriel

Group shot of the whole squad:

It's a bad day to be a Genestealer...

There are more angles on each of them in my gallery.

And some non-Space Hulk stuff, another Sanguinary Priest. The conversion isn't the flashiest, but his only job is to keep the beautiful SH minis alive in 40k! The lighting has washed out the white a bit, but you can see what's what. I think the chalice conversion is a little better on this one.:

More soon, and any comments are, as always, welcome!
