Well, my friend and I discovered that another friend who is not involved in the hobby had some minis from the Black Reach set (Remember that? 5th ed? Good times). Well, I didn't expect to find them in quite the condition they were in; I'm not blaming said friend, who received them from some relative, but they clearly have suffered from extreme neglect. Let's take a look.

Prepare to get the feels for these plastic minis.
Spoiler:

Oi! Where'd ya 'eadz roll off ta, ya gitz!?

Oh, blood on your choppa? How... creative and nice this is.

No fewer than 7 'eadless Boyz.

Warboss has since gone MIA.

...Or at least, the portion of him that was here to begin with...

These Koptas ain't going anywhere soon.

Clearly, changing these orks from what they are now to tabletop beauties will take work. Lots of it. First of all, I have to address the sheer incompleteness of this force. 14 Boyz, half are not complete, 4 Nobz, half incomplete, half of a Warboss and two disparate Deffkopta chassis are now all mine to work with. I need to locate appropriate bits, but am unsure of how to acquire only parts of minis. I'm considering perusing through Ebay at this point.

Let's get to flipping these Orks into what they deserve to be!

Hello everybody!

I don't think it counts as necroposting when I'm the only one who was already on this thread... But after a looong hiatus from the hobby, with the exception of adding a Taurox and Wyvern to my IG force from Christmas, I am finally back and ready to paint some Orks!

The first thing I decided was that seeing as I couldn't find a reliable paint stripper that would not damage the minis, I would just paint over what is currently there. Not too big of a deal there.

I checked in with my FLGS tonight, and starting digging through all the boxes of used sprues and stray bits. Lo and behold, what do I find but a whooole bunch of Ork 'eads? This is exactly what I needed to get my project in motion. I grabbed enough heads for everyone who needed one (6 Boyz and 2 Nobz), a few arms (this really came in handy), and a couple of extra odds and ends (some Marine pauldrons that the Boyz must have looted, some scrap metal looking pieces for Deffkopta rotors). I also picked up a few extra paints to help me out with a new range of minis.

I know, Citadel paints. The yellow ended up being frustratingly thin and watery, but I really like having paint pots with Orky names. I just couldn't help it, y'know?

I decided that I will work on the infantry first. I took the heads and glued them onto vacant Ork necks, saving the larger heads I found for the Nobz.

Please excuse the occasional blurriness. I didn't have the best photography setup (or the skills )

Pretty sure some of these heads were WHFB Orks, but it'll add some more diversity to this lot.

"Oi, wot you lookin' at me like dat fer?" a nervous Boy with mangled arms asks the Mad Dok slowly approaching him with a hefty box cutta.

The arms that I grabbed came in handy, I had just forgotten that one of the Boyz had half severed arms to replace. Due to the funny looking shoulder/arm gap, I threw a looted pauldron on to hide the damage.

All the incomplete Orks are now... complete!

Now, it's time to test run a paint scheme on one of the Boyz.
The first area I focus on after basing the model with sand and priming black is the skin. We start with a basecoat of Reaper brand Elven Green (a color I also use for Guardsmen's armor).

The second layer is the new color I grabbed, WAAAGH! Flesh.

Finally, a highlight of Warboss Green. Here is a before and after of Ork skin.

For teef and nails, I layer with Khemri Brown, or however it's spelled, then top with a straight white. This should give these areas a slightly dirty look. Even Boyz don't like going to the dentist more than they 'ave to.

Then I just added Scorched Brown, Merchite Red, and Flash Gitz Yellow, Reaper brand Gun Metal and Citadel Chain Mail with wild abandon, failing to document individual steps (did I mention I also picked out the eyes with some black and white?).

That's all I had time for tonight. The first Boy is far from finished, but of course, the first mini of the bunch is the hardest, right? I really hope to bring my new Clan the glory they truly deserve. I really hope you all enjoy watching this transformation begin as much as I do!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hello again!

This morning, I finished up what I believe I will use as my paint scheme for my first ever boy!

First I got the regular layering squared away.

Then, I did my best to imitate paint chips on metal surfaces and along their edges. I also drybrushed the leather areas with a bit too much of my Khemri Brown, so I did an additional lighter drybrush of Scorched Brown to cover up some of the mess. Finally, I washed the cloth areas with Devlan Mud to get a fairly satisfactory finish.

Now that I have painted my first ever Ork, I want to see what everyone thinks about the scheme and the execution. Every bit of C&C will be welcomed and greatly appreciated. Thanks again, everyone, and keep it Orky!

Side note: I'd like to come up with some sort of fluffy backstory to this new Klan of mine-- seeing as the minis themselves have been salvaged from very disparate conditions, I'd like the idea that these Boyz value lootin' above all else. I'm also considering delving into the idea of scratchbuilt vehicles-- just as soon as I can get my hands on some plasticard.

Hello everybody, just a mini update before I do more work next weekend. A grand total of 3 Boyz are now complete. Fortunately, I photographed them from my dorm, where I actually have my lamp for *somewhat* better lighting (maybe a bit too much, however), but I could only use my phone to take the pictures .

Dead beakies don't need armor.

That's it for now, but I'll be sure to get some more of the Boyz or Nobz going over the weekend. I'm still mulling over how to replace the propellas for the deffkoptas, but they will be rebuilt fairly soon.
After this lot has been painted up, I'm starting to consider expanding the force-- perhaps some sort of scratch built trukk! Only time will tell where this project is going. Stay tuned!

Orks look good, Kiln. I especially like the looted shoulder pad-looks like the Ork didn't completely cover the Ultramarines logo on it with that red paint.

Can't go wrong with red and yellow on orks. I used a desert yellow and scab red scheme on my old Gorkamorka mob and it worked a treat. These are looking great. Restoring a sad previously loved mini will always get two thumbs up from me too.

I'd love to see you put a full force together this way. Just find the worst cases of cruelty to plastic you can get your hands on and TCL them into greatness.

Thank you all for the feedback so far! I will make sure to document whatever I can accomplish over the weekend. I intend to paint up a couple more Boyz, perhaps a Nob, and rebuild the Deffkopta rotors.

Pieces that I am still missing include bases for the koptas and some sort of bit (backpack?) that go on the backs of the Boyz holding big shootas. I honestly don't know what it should look like back there, because most photos are of a model's front side, naturally, but something needs to fill the awkward looking gaps.

So, I did a bit of research, and it looks like the bits that go on the backs of my big shoota boyz look like this:

Now the question is how to replicate this without owning any Orky sprues. My options appear to be the following:

- Try my best to loot extra bits from my IG sprues. Since I glued the Wyvern ammo packs to my recently acquired Wyvern tank, I could try to fit the Hydra autocannon drums to Guardsmen's backpacks, Ork it up a little bit, and mount those on the backs of my Boyz. Note that though I can't switch out the ammo packs, I fiddled with the Wyvern barrels such that I can still slide the Hydra's barrels in for a snug fit if I ever wanted to field it that way, all without magnets!

- Dive through the extra bits, bobs, and gubbinz that my FLGS so fortunately accepts from people and resells very cheap. Those 8 heads, 3 arms, and random armor plates? $1 for them all. If I go for this option, I'll still probably end up looting bits originally for other armies to enhance my Klan's loot-happy theme.

- All of the above. I have 2 big shoota Boyz, so I could use each idea to add to the variety.

My plan for this weekend, as it currently stands, is now to structurally complete the big shootas as well as the deffkoptas, and find someway to base the latter. I have no mini flying bases, so I may try some shenanigans with standard 60mm bases and offcuts from the clear plastic sprue from my Valkyrie. After that, I'll be painting up what I can. Stay tuned!

Alrighty guys, it's been a fairly exciting Friday night, not from painting, but from building, converting, and rebuilding! (But I will get to painting stuff later this weekend of course!)

First thing I took a look at after a week away from my good ol' workstation was the Deffkoptas. I really wanted to add new rotors, but one didn't even have the central hub bit.

I pondered on this dilemma for a while, then I sifted through old IG sprues and shoebox of bits. I found something I must have anticipated would have come in handy. It was a bit of sprue that started inside a Taurox's back hatch. I figured it would get my job done very well, even with only 3 rotors.

I added up a bit of stray bits of plastic to make it feel a bit fuller...

And placed it atop my less complete Kopta.

Now for the rotors! It was very difficult, even with a hefty box cutta, to try to bisect thick armor plate bits...

So I needed to use a clamp for safety reasons. (And yes, that's a big, big bin of Lego Star Wars sets. Jealous, aren't ya? )

But I finally got some suitable rotors!

It took a little bit of trimming for the 4-rotor Deffkopta, but I managed to get the pieces to fit fairly snugly to the central hubs. Well, one gave me a bit of trouble, so I just let it sit funny till the glue set.

I may trim these rotors to give them a tad bit of a sleeker, sharper appearance, but not too much so, and NOT by sacrificing any glorious rivets.

It was at this point I realized, I need MOAR bits, bobs, and gubbinz. My deffkoptas needed bases, and I still had a nob without a CCW, but I really didn't want another big choppa if I didn't need to make one.

So I went off to my FLGS to dig through their spare bits, just like last week!
Looking like a miserly scavenger: the price you must pay to do Ork conversions and repairs. Though it is economical!
I arrived home about 45 minutes later, with more things for the project. But I encountered something I... did not expect.
Spoiler:

WE STRUCK GOOOOLD!

In addition to this amazing find, I brought home a lot of extra armor plates and such... I am preparing my first true scratch-build: the humble Trukk.

I also found what I could use as a welding mask for a Mek, once I actually have a Mek, that is. But why not just loot it now?

And now, I introduce you to my first Klaw Nob-- a looted Lightinin' Klaw Nob!

Last thing I did was try to figure out my dilemma with the Big Shoota Boyz. What I eventually just decided on was using a Hydra ammo drum mounted above some pouches or such from the Ogryn/Bullgryn box:

...But there's a bit of a drawback. I'll probably need greenstuff to take care of this fairly obvious hole:

Interestingly enough, I never did find suitable Deffkopta bases, even though those were my primary objective.

That's it for today. All the Orks have sand glued to their bases, with the exception of one Boy who I may yet donate to Kb_Lock's Ork Klan (go check that thread out!), so the bases should be dry and ready for priming tomorrow. As a final note, here's a (still kinda gross) groupshot of what the entirety of my Orks look like:

Thanks for reading, everyone! I hope you're as excited as me for a painted Ork mob, some Koptas, and plans for a Trukk scratchbuild! Stay tuned!

Nice looting! Really enjoying the progress. Especially good job on those rotors.

May I offer a small criticism?

Spoiler:
The Nob's lightning claw arm looks a bit too long. Perhaps it would be worth amputating a little more of his arm so the claw sits a little lower than his elbow, instead of his wrist?

This is actually a good point, now that I look at it again. If I remove the arm wrappings, then the Klaw's fingers should sit right in the same position his original fingers were.

I probably would've had pics of my next batch of Orks by now, but then I had a HUGE feth up that cost me a lot of time, half a pot of Scorched Brown paint, and nearly a pair of pants.

I'll try to have something shareable by tomorrow, though. Stay tuned!

So, it's the end of the weekend, and I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of finished minis I ended up with before I came back to campus... only to find honey drizzled on my doorknob due to an ongoing prank war that my roommate started...

Oh, and yeah, I spilled a SECOND container of paint for the second time in a span of 24 hours . I feel like a mess. I had to move quickly to clean up, or else a second pair of pants and the rug were about to go fasta indefinitely (guess which color? ).

So yeah, I'm a bit stressed, two pots of paint lost roughly half of their contents, but here are some pics of a 4th completed Ork boy and the other 4 from my batch in various stages of completion.

Hey guys, another weekend, another little update. Today, rather than finishing 4 of the half-painted Boyz I started last weekend (I promise I'll get to them though ), I have begun work on my Trukk! Considering the final product is supposed to be very crude, Orky, and ramshackle, I decided it would be best not to go too over the top with planning and just kind of jump right into it. So I'm going for more of a front-to-back approach, *almost* winging it as I go. This means I'm starting with the grill and engine block. I took a look at the bitz I looted last week, and started playing around with them till they went together in a way that looked "right" to me.

With this big gap, I decided it would look cool to have part of the engine itself sticking out the top. Dangerously exposed, but cool! So I looked at my mostly used Taurox sprues, and found some bits that I think went to the rocket launcher thingy...

...and then I kinda just stuck 'em to this piece of plastic I had lying around that was about the same length. Looks like the top of a V6 to these untrained eyes.

I cobbled a couple more pieces together, and basically fit the result into the big gap in the hood, which has a very odd looking front end as of right now. Engine still not glued in at the time of this post so I can play around with it a little more easily.

Looks a tad better with the Taurox bumper thing in front, but it's still missing... something.

I decided to add an Ork symbol to the middle of the grill, and then I'd do some sort of air intakes on either side. I bravely took my first steps into the realm of plasticard, but I am really rather pleased with the results:

Now, even the engine block itself is still far from done, there are gaps and such everywhere, and still an overall lack of details/important "functional" parts. However, the hood of my Trukk is finally tangible and hopefully I'll be less afraid to use plasticard for actual pieces of the body soon, or else I'll run out of looted plastic bits very soon. Problem is I have a kind-of sort-of idea of how I want the back of the Trukk to look, but still am short on ideas of how I'll get the cab to look nice. And I'll need an Ork driver, as one of the few details I planned is to have it look very open and armor-less.

Hope this isn't looking like total garbage... in the bad way, that is! I'll make sure to have a few more status updates for you all before the weekend wanes (but Superbowl might cut things short), and I am looking forward to everybody's feedback! More Ork restoration/looting & scratchbuilding is on the way, stay tuned!

Another extra quick update!

In an interesting turn of events, I'll be heading back to my dorm early this weekend (in part because of the Super Bowl, in part to study for midterms, etc.), which did not leave me time to get any painting done... But I added a little bit more to the hood of my Trukk, and I am fairly pleased with the results. What the front was really missing was a grill or such for air intake; modern cars have them in various sizes, trucks and SUVs typically have larger ones, even the Taurox has a grill on the front, so I decided to construct one (well, two halves, really) from plasticard.

Trying to the first half of the grill with tiny pieces was something of a nightmare because I didn't first mount the frame on the hood itself, so the little vents kept sliding around with very little contact to the frame piece . The second half I assembled more wisely, and it took me much less time and many fewer tears.

I also glued in the engine after adding a couple bits to the front. Completely not based on a real V6 or anything, and a conventional engine would probably have no need for these pieces, but if an Ork Mek believes enough...

I also glued on the bumper thing from the Taurox kit, not yet pictured, but I believe it enhances the "heavy-duty off-roader" look. When I get back to this project, I'll consider finishing this section of the vehicle, filling in gaps where necessary and adding wheel wells to the side. After that, I am more inclined to work on the back of the Trukk where the Boyz ride; I don't want to build the cab without an Ork driver, which I will probably lack for a while, but hope to eventually obtain. That's it for a little while folks, please bear with me as I slowly progress on my projects. Stay tuned, my friends!

Hello everybody!

Right to business! Partly just to expand the collection, partly because they wouldn't be a bad choice in a future game far from now, partly because of this month's painting challenge, I picked up these guys:

Oi, boss, we'z here ta set up kamp and stuffs!

And you can't go wrong then grots are so cheap money-wise as well!
Watcher mouf, boss! We'z worf it!

Meanwhile, I finished up a batch of Ork Boyz started a couple weeks ago, bringing my grand total up to 8 redeemed Boyz. I started to experiment with that dry paint I picked up as well, but alas, I feel I still lack in drybrushing skills, and colors I intend to drybrush generally are applied far too heavily, or not at all if I remove too much paint from the brush. Take a look.

My mob as it currently stands:

And just for fun, they're going to beat on those 18 or so guardsmen I've failed to paint for the longest, longest time. But at least I'm painting any stuff, right?

Okay, and a Primaris Psyker too...

So, 4 mini-projects for the Ork army (Boyz/Nobz, Grotz, Deffkoptas, Trukk) to work on and some guardsmen to boot (let's not talk about the 3 HWT that are still NOS after at least a year). A lot of work, and I'm going to get to it all, at some point. Stay tuned!

Yes! You have the touch of the mek, salvage orks are best orks!

Water down your paints, that'll help with the drybrushing. Consider washes as well. Finally, either drill out your gun barrels, or give them black dots for the barrels.
