Just wondering why everyone puts that 10pt plasma gun in thier 6 man lascannon tac squads? 1/2 the time no one in my squad gets to shoot besides the lascannon and you have the chance of killing yourself with the plasma gun (maybe I am just unlucky but it seems to happen to me a LOT when I do field them and no longer field one without an apothecary) I have moved to 6 man squad w/ HB/ML/LC, usually a mix of 2 types in an army

Because they're a 10 point S7 ap2 gun? Seems like a fantastic deal to me.

but they so rarely get to shoot.
Maybe it is my style of play (reasonably static) but generally my las squads either set up where they will be or move in to position on first turn and then don't move again.
Probably do me better if I dropped them in razorbacks and got them a bit closer.

Uh, how do you figure they so rarely get to shoot? 24" range is pretty decent. the 113 point twin-devourer Carnifex is one of the best and most trusted buys out there, and it only has 18" of range Also, leave the razorbacka t home. The last thing you want is your lascannon moving. You only get six shots a game, tops - and mostly at the beggining. Why waste time moving into position when you can start there?

The Plasma gun also makes the enemy think twice about maneuvering into charge range, thereby granting your Lascannon a little bit of extra security.
And if they do enter range, chances are that the PG will make its points back with a single shot.

It's not so much that the Plasma Gun is a game altering force of unspeakable power, it's more that it's 10 points. If it shoots once, you probably just got the cost back.
As has been said, 24" is plenty long for a lot of work. Mine get to shoot all the time. Can't really imagine why yours don't. Typical deployment zones are 12" off the long edge. Usually you can find a nice piece of cover at least 6" out. Does your enemy never leave his deployment zone?

You should be using the plasma gun all of the time.
Space Marine armies are on of the shootiest armies around and you should be shooting the crap out of your opponent. And when you can out shoot someone, they have to come to you and try to assault you to win. And that is when you should be getting a lot of use out of the plama gun.

Heck, my plasma guns are tank-killers! I don't know how many times the lascannon has muffed it, but the plasma gun comes through to debilitate/destroy medium-AV vehicles. Nothing like watching a Wave Serpent or Devilfish eat dirt because of that 10-pt. wonder.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

Well, vs. other MEQs, the plasma gun is worth 5 bolt guns. So that 10 points gives you the additional firepower of 5 marines.
I lose guys to them all the time too, but they always make up their points. Mine are particularly good at dropping Land Speeders.
