Lucasfilm announced today that their first film in the new standalone Star Wars stories series, Rogue One, has begun principal photography. Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters) is directing Rogue One, which tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star. The film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and is slated for a December 16, 2016 release.

Honeslty, the ONLY real problem that I have with this, is that we should never know exactly how many Bothans equal "many"

You're mixing movies up. The Bothan's got the plans to the 2nd Death Star. This is about the 1st Death Star.

All of those involved. As the plans were leaked some Bothans were intended to survive long enough to get the plans out. Those survivors would then be hunted.
Very few would have got away.

Agreed! There's no inherent rule that makes anything set before EP IV bad, and this has all the makings of being great. The genre-movie-in-a-setting has worked brilliantly for them with Marvel, so applying the same method here and doing an ouyt-and-out War movie in the SW setting will hopefully do just as well!

That's fine. Young Han Solo probably won't be. Dedicating an entire movie to something that didn't even need dialog to cover...it's just unnecessary in a galaxy full of story potential.

It's like the old EU all over again.

Meh, as long as "young" means in his 20s I think it would be fine.

I'd like to see the story of him leaving the Imperial Academy, meeting Chewie, and getting the Falcon from Lando.

True, but I wouldn't be surprised if they kept that bit. It would explain why the Rebellion gave him a command position. You don't make a smuggler a General unless he's got some credentials. And just being a good pilot isn't enough.

Looks like the story has already been set but I'd like to see some of the EU brought back and used. The could have Kyle Katarn mentioned in connection with stealing the Death Star plans.

Rogue Squadron, originally dubbed Rogue Flight, and also known as the Rogues, was an elite Rebel Alliance starfighter squadron founded by Commander Arhul Narra, Luke Skywalker, and Wedge Antilles shortly after the Battle of Yavin out of Red Squadron.

"Rogue One" takes place pre-Yavin...so yeah, it won't be "about Rogue fething Squadron" unless they revamp the original canon that had Rogue Squadron being established from the surviving pilots from the Death Star attack.

In any regards, a group of Rebels referring to themselves with a callsign of "Rogue" wouldn't exactly be too far fetched.

Maybe the surviving members go on to be the pilots who eventually form Rouge Squadron.

We know, as of right now barring any changes, what pilots formed Rogue Squadron.

Luke Skywalker, Wedge Antilles, and Arhul Narra. None of them were groundpounders--which looks like it'll be a big part of "Rogue One".

Well, Luke wasn't exactly *not* a groundpounder...

Personally, I think they should have named the film "Wraith One", it would fit better with the Wraith Squadron concept of a unit of crack fighter pilot commandos.

lol, wut. Being a business administrator is not a credential for being a general in a war.

Either way, your point that Han would have to have been in the Military for the Rebellion to make him a general is wrong.

Wraiths are New Republic era--this is pre-"A New Hope".
