Hey all, so I've heard basically everyone describe the Death Korps as being based on German soldiers from WW1-2. And I agreed, but I was watching a WW1 documentary today and was doing a bit of research and I'd say the Death Korps look way more like the French. The long coats and how they're done up at the front, the backpacks and boots, etc. I think the only thing that looks more German than French are the helmets. I'm pretty sure they've mashed the French and the Germans from WW1 together but they are definitely a lot more french, imo. Also, their tanks have the Trench guard things at the back of them, a lot like what the French tanks had in WW1, to help them move over trenches. And the Company Commander almost looks Napoleonic

P.S. put this in this forum section as I thought it was kinda fluff related

It's not so much based on real history as a public perception of history. In kind of the same way Space Marines are based off of a fictionalized interpretation of heraldric knight traditions. Real world uniforms and equipment aside, the Death Korps are 'Nazis in Spaaaaaaace.'

I'm dreaming of a homemade IG regiment made by Kriegers converted in French "Poilus". A little headswap with 14-18 French soldiers heads, some blue-white-red flags and blue-grey dirty trenchcoats.

To the OP, someone on a previous thread some months ago made an exhaustive analysis of Krieg wargear and basically said it was inspired from many WWI armies at once. But I can't recall which one. Maybe you'll find it in the search engine.

- 22nd Rhayé Storm Division : 2000points (Spetsnaz-themed IG)

- Ordo Xenos : ~700pts

There is nothing really German about the DKoK (apart from the name ofc) They are just supposed have a WW1 theme. You can see it really well in the helmets. DKoK helmets look like the Stahlhelm and Adrian helm had a lovechild.

Ive always been in the camp that dkok are way more french dirived than german. The uniforms, the artillery emplacements, the vehicles, the tactics, are all de facto french stuff.
but unfortunatly, general knowledge joe doest know much about france other than they surrendered in WW2, and so germans become the default fallback for 'WW1 guys that dont look like the brits.'

Saying theyr nazis is space is pretty fething far off the dart board though.

The Steel Legion are the most German looking IG models. Fallschirmjager Armored troopers, but they're WW2 not WW1.

Think of something clever to say.

Steel Legion are based on Fallschirmjager, the old 2nd edition metal Cadians are based, visually, on regular WW2 German army troops (the tunics, the webbing and even the shape of the helmet).

Death Death Korps are in vaguely French uniforms, with German helmets, using British Bren machineguns.

How are Steel Legion based on Fallschirmjäger?

Their visual is very much influenced by multiple powers. The helmets obviously take after the German stahlhelm and the Grenadier armor mostly based off of the German grabenpanzer trench armor , but the puttees and greatcoats very much take after WW1 French uniforms, and the gas mask is most reminiscent of a WW1 British gas mask.

Hrm...they're not carbon copies, but they have similar tunic cut, very similar helmet design, gear webbing, not to mention helmet markings GW has portrayed them with. , the similarity is uncanny

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Aside from the top loading magazine (hardly unique to the bren), the dkok heavy stubbers look more like french hotchkiss machineguns.

And theyre almost a dead ringer for the 1930 hotchkiss HMG, top mag included.

Ah, my mistake - I hadn't realised the Hotchkiss also had that conical barrel end. Carry on.

If you look up
Spoiler:

Now if you look up

You will see a French than German soldiers in World War 1 I am using these because they have the clearest similarities although there are more.

Now that you have seen the pictures lets talk about them. You can clearly see the simulates in the helmet as it clearly looks like a german stahlhelm in terms of shape and size Now if you look at the french adrain helmet you will see that they share the same plum at the top. The DKoK also stick the german grey were the french use a horizon blue. They also use a very similar German shrapnel armor this can be seen with their engineers. The last thing I would like to brush on because it is late is that their gas mask is very British empire/American/German in terms of its design here is an american gas mask Their are more similarities of different countries, but I chose the obvious ones. I hope this is decently helpful as I used pictures to guide you.
