I'm going to be trying my new tau against my necrons to see how they play and get used to them, etc.

What would be a good points limit to test things, nothing larger than 5k points I hope, models aren't a problem( I proxy like a mad man in my house) and I'll probably hold several matches with different lists, but I don't know which size to do.

1000-1850 points is normally a good limit. Then you can test in an environment like a tournament (if that is what you want) or they are just large enough to get out a couple toys.

Best point limit to test things -> the actual point limit you would normally play a game. The meta of games make huge shifts with different point lv's.

This really depends upon which type of game you're playing and what you and your opponent plan on fielding.

5th edition style Eternal War works best between 1500-1850. EW with the addition of either a LoW or Fortification works best between 1850-2000. EW with an LoW and Fortification Network works best at 2500 - 3000.

Maelstrom of War works best at 1500-2000.

Cities of Death works best at 1250-1500.

Go above those point values and the games will go far longer than usual; lower than that and the armies can become unbalanced by the addition of certain high cost units.

I like 2K. It makes games take a bit longer, but I like larger armies.

I like 1500-1850. Just large enough so that we have a game that's good to kill a few hours, but not so long as to drag on.
