Howdy!

After many years of not being active in 40k I thought I'd breakout my old Imperial Guard army and finally do some justice to them, after all the army has just been sitting in my damn closet for Emperor knows how long!

I dug out the old boxes and other containers where I've stored all my guardsmen and after a quick inspection I noticed that most of them are falling apart. I guess that cheap super glue I used as a kid wasn't the best choice. So I ended up taking a quick trip down to my local Hobby Lobby and picked up a new cutting mat, X-Acto knife, and some super glue. I also stopped down by the Dollar General and picked up some LA Awesome to strip most of my poorly painted minis.

Here are today's results.

I really created this thread to keep me motivated and give myself some accountability for the duration of this project. I'll try to post some weekly progress reports on how things are going. Hopefully you guys and gals enjoy my journey back into 40k! Oh yeah, please leave some comments on how y'all think I'm doing. It'd be great to get some feedback on how people feel!

P.S. Sorry if the photo quality is low, I took these with my phone and this is my first time posting pictures on a forum so I don't know about how I should've sized them.

It looks like you're making imperial guard soup with that second photo. I highly recommend you keep plugging away. Finished armies are way cooler than unfinished armies. I should know I have a totally unfinished Ork army.

Nice collection of stuff, tasty looking IG soup.

Have you got an army list you're working to or just revamping your old minis.

Thanks! I've been working on my different Guardsmen soups, hopefully this one comes out good!
I know, I never really got into painting side of the hobby, but now I feel like it's growing on me so we'll see how far I can take this.

Thank you, it's looks almost good enough to eat!

Actually no I haven't. I don't have the new Guard codex on hand so I haven't looked at what options they run now or what list builds people run.

Hey everyone,

Before I headed down to the courts this morning to play some basketball I broke out my Guard soup and brushed off most of the paint off of my old guardsmen. Here are the before and after shots.

In the next couple of days I'll be attempting to repose some of the guardsmen. After that, I'll take a trip down to the local hobby shops and start picking up painting supplies. I guess that's when the really work will start.

Hello Dakka! I know it's been many seasons since I've posted, but I'm still around and kicking. I stayed lurking around the hobby and never really gave it up.

After some travels and adventures in life, I dragged myself back to try and complete a 40k army. Over the past year, I've gotten real serious about choosing an army theme, choosing a paint scheme, and sourcing the bits I'd need. Well I've finally made some recent headways in the hobby. That initial hobby progress I documented over on my Instagram, but I thought I'd come back on here and post stuff for this community!

The following are the photos I saw that really gave me an inspiration for my theme and look of my troopers. These photos I found in the 2019 Sabbat World Crusade book.

I really wanted to have a Imperial Guard ... sorry, Astra Militarium army whose look wasn't as combat oriented or frontline in appearance like the Cadians or Catachans, but not full on parade ground like the Mordians. So I settled on this look.

Most of the trooper is just a basic Cadian Shock Trooper. I sourced the arms fatigue arms from Anvil Industry and the side/garrison cap heads from Golem Games on Shapeways.

Here are links to the bits:
Anvil Industry Fatigue Arms
Side Cap Heads

Here is the one completed squad I have so far.

So far after finally getting the planning part of this project done and out of the way I am happy to be back in the hobby. I completely forgot how therapeutic it was to sit there and build/paint minis during the day. Also the sense of accomplishment when I got just one squad done was amazing. Hopefully I can keep this progress up and meet that lifetime goal of having a painted Guard Army. I'll settle for a starting 1000 points for now.

Hope everyone is having a good day wherever they are at right now!

Oh before I forget here is what I'm working on tonight.

I painted on the greens for the fatigues and armor, then hit the boots with contrast black, followed that up with a Athonian Camoshade wash. Just letting the wash fully dry before I go in and drybrush the uniforms and armor.

Edit: I post more frequently on my IG. So you can check there or give me a follow @BoxImperialis.
Also, I posted the lore and background of my army in the Dakka Fiction section so if you're bored, head over there and read up on story I wrote for these guys!

Thank you much appreciated. I spent a lot of time trying to find a 28mm scale version of this hat design for a whole army before I found Golem Games on Shapeways.

Thanks bro, much appreciated! I know that it's not an overnight process, but it's exciting to see the pieces start to fall in place.

Was able to knock out the drybrush stage and add a little detail work in today.

At this stage I would normally add the arms and heads, but I'm all out from my initial order from Anvil and Shapeways. So the project has hit a little stall, but luckily I already placed orders for more fatigue arms and side cap heads. Hopefully the parts come in soon so I can keep on with the progress of this project.

I like the kitbash, it’s a nice aesthetic and your paint scheme and basing is a nice end result. I would love that Sabbat Worlds book, I’ll succeed one day!

Painting in sub assemblies - very good idea and I wish I’d done that 150 Guardsmen ago!!! I look forward to further progress- I am slowly grinding away at my own company so you have my support for sure.

Thank you so much! It's really appreciated. I did the sub assemblies out of accident really. It's only because I'm waiting on arms from Anvil, but it turned out to be a good choice.

This might seem a little funny, but I remember your original Flexburg platoon from Warseer back when I was a young kid! The old Warzone minis if I recall correctly! I went over and checked out your thread on your current guardsmen, they look really amazing! I love the combination of various 3rd party bits from different suppliers. It gives that unit a really distinct feel.

Thank you for the support! I'll defiantly be checking out your posts on here or on Warseer!

Woke up this morning and had the motivation to try and paint up a regimental standard. There were a ton of small details that I kept having to go back over and I also tried free handing the regiment's name for the first that. That was tough and frustrating. All in all, I'm glad how it came out and glad I gave it a shot today.

Thank you so much! Appreciate it! Yes, I feel the guard projects are getting thin compared to when I first got in the hobby a long time ago.

Thank you! It seems everyone is loving my little head swap I'm doing on the regular Cadian base model. I only have one squad fully done, but I'm excited for the day I see a rifle company on the table. It'll be a sight to see.

Thank you! I've been getting so many positive comments about the head swap. Makes me think I made the right choice for my army theme.

You should! Give at least some of your troopers some comfortable head gear like a garrison or patrol cap.

Captain Brown! Thank you for the comment!

Years ago when I was a kid, I remember seeing those Necromunda 8th conscripts! That was when I first was inspired to wanting to do a light infantry look on Cadians without shoulder pads/helmets. Its a shame though, I can never get the job of shaving down the armor on the arms like you or others on the internet. So I'm forced to use third party arms.
I also went with American style overseas caps and not the German style.

Thanks again for the comment and stopping by!

Tonight on the hobby desk, I have painted another squad of guardsmen and have a fireteam primed.

Nine troopers have got the their fatigues/body armor basecoat painted green, black boots, and then hit with an Athonian Camoshade wash.
Just waiting for the wash to fully dry and then I'll hit them with the drybrush.

Next up will be six kneeling troopers. I've been waiting to do these guys. Since I'm batch painting I wanted to stay consistent with the poses instead of jumping back and forth between standing and kneeling troopers.

Unfortunately, still no shipment from the forge. Waiting on the arms and heads to come in.
The goal is to have the sixty troopers painted up to their stage in the sub assemble before the arms come in. Hopefully I can knock out that goal this week.

Aw wow, thank you for telling me that! Feels weird but fun to know the old Warzone boys are still remembered, that’s really cool!

Really glad you like what I’m working on, the Flexberg turned into a real melting pot of different kits and I love it haha. Yes, please do come comment - I’m trying to whip up more interaction on Warseer as it was my original stamping ground

Keep up the great work - I am trying to do a little bit of hobby every day to whittle down the horde so you are WAY ahead of me!

It's crazy to think I just lurked around when you first posted them and to see how the army has changed over the years! Their first color scheme was so striking and just stood out. Not to mention they weren't GW minis. It's funny, I grew up in Texas and a guy at my old store ages ago did the same concept. I defiantly like the direction that you took your Guard army. Such a melting pot of different style kit on troopers, but somehow all look like they should belong together. I do need to get on Warseer and stop lurking and share there as well.

Thank you! It's the sub assemble fooling you! They might be all painted, washed, and drybrushed; but they are still missing all their arms, heads, and rifles.
Soon though I'll be able to start pumping out full combat ready squads.

edit: I noticed some of your lore for the Flexberg was set during the Augustine Crusade. I want to write my army in the same background period. Maybe the Kollax Auxiliaries will meet the veterans of the 17th Flexberg out on a patrol!

Thank you and much appreciated! I'm really glad the army transferred from concept art, to theme, to tabletop really well.

 Guardling wrote:

GW really did put some of us in a bind. haha
Growing up and while doing research for this project, I saw several project logs where people sent their Cadians to the chop shop to give them this light infantry look. I tried it before caving and getting 3rd party arms. I could just never get the right looking product on the arms I saw around on the internet.

Good morning everyone!

While sipping my morning recaf, I thought of an idea I saw floated on reddit I saw last night.
Since I'm already cutting down on the amount of armor on my troopers () I thought about taking off the back nub that's supposed to be a backpack connector. This would allow for a smooth surface to paint a symbol or badge. In my current, and previous units, we use unofficial patches to identify our assigned flights on the back of our plate carriers. I would assume this tradition would continue in the far future of the M42.

What do you guys think? Below is a codex entry I found on campaign badges and some potential designs.

Welcome back to the hobby. I am glad to see you got this project going because I really like the look you have created.

I love the idea of campaign badges. The extra flavor from those things are always great. I just struggle with where/how to get them on the models as most of the decals available (that I am aware of) are far too big for most areas on most guardsman models.

I am looking forward to seeing this regiment develop.

Thank you, getting back into the hobby has been really fun and has also helped me deal with the state of things outside right now. A little decompression against Nurgle's rot has gone a long way . I'm glad you enjoy the look. I was honestly skeptical on if the concept art I had found would translate well to the tabletop. I'm glad it did.

I have seen a couple third party companies that produce decals that fit on shoulder pads of Cadians. So hopefully, this will translate well to a smoothed out backplate on their flak vest. I'll have to do more in-depth research on it though. Thank you again and keep popping in to see the progress of the regiment and it's story!

Hobby motivation has been something I think I struggled with for a long time, probably like most of us. haha but then I remember it's something fun and not a chore. Especially helps once I start seeing all the progress I have made from half assembled grey plastic, to half assembled painted minis. Thank you and good luck with your project as well. Today, I finished painting 50 guardsmen up to the halfway point of my sub assemble, plus the 10 from the completed squad and that makes 60 troopers this month . All the uniforms and body armor have been basecoated, washed, and drybrushed. I did the boots with black contrast paint and painted the chest aquila yellow. Still waiting on my shipment from Anvil for the arms I'll need and it's gonna be a little longer until I get my hands on another shipment of side cap heads. It's exciting to see all these armless/headless guardsmen lined up togethers, especially after looking back on a photo from when I just primed them and even longer ago prior to stripping off their original paints. Hopefully, next post will include me fiddling around posing arms and lasguns!

Well done on the flag too. Details are not my thing either but it turned out great. The red will really stand out amongst all the green. I like the idea of a badge/symbol too.
