The Wretched Sons were born of a remnant of the Sons of Horus, combined with a smattering of Death Guard, Emperor's Children and World Eater survivors - all still loyal to Horus - inadvertently left for dead following the withdrawal of the Warmaster's forces following the Great Betrayal on Isstvan III . Knowing no rescue was forthcoming, these forgotten Betrayers wandered the scarred surface of the planet scavenging weapons and technology, in the process finding a surprising number of survivors, until eventually the Dark Mechanicus Artificer Phledexus managed to repair a crashed spacecraft. The Wretched Sons departed Isstvan in an attempt to join the Warmaster in the final assault on Terra and the False Emperor. Warp storms and other misfortunes delayed them, until the Wretched Sons learned of the fall of the Emperor, and the death of Horus, at which time they fled like the remaining Heretics for the Eye of Terror.
As a sister project to my Inqu][sitor builds, the Betrayer warband - The Wretched Sons and their various Dark Mechanicus allies - will be detailed herein.
Those of you following my other blogs please forgive some slight repeat posting - new stuff will be on the way shortly!
The Wretched Sons currently consist of three models built, with only one of those painted, the Helbrute Zamael - who gives you a good showcase of the intended paint scheme:

GS work on Gutrot continues slowly - fixed the skin-to-tentacle transition on the tentacle gripping the axe, and rebuilt his right pectoral, since without it he looked a little sunken-chested:

I'm living on borrowed time too with an ancient pot of Flesh Wash that appears to have taken on unique properties in its advanced age :S
Great stuff. I like the stripped-down palate, and love the grim industrial feel the models evoke. And the pale death-pallor skin tones works really well as contrast. Well done.

The painting process was a variation of the paintjob on Zamael the Helbrute - the main difference is I didn't use salt for chipping, and didn't use a spraygun, it was done with brushes.
And to give credit where it is due - check out the Mariner's Blight Extreme-corrosion tutorial from Eye of Error - that's where I borrowed the recipe from, then tweaked it.
I tend to paint in a bit of a frenzy, dipping into colors here and there and going back and forth a lot, but the basic recipe is:
- GW Chaos Black spray, then GW White from above for zenithal shading - Vallejo (VJ) Rust and VJ Orange all over (except for the heads - I kept those separate) - Drybrush GW Ryza Rust randomly all over - Gloss spray layer to protect the rust from the chipping - VJ Pale Green, 2 thin layers, not too carefully - Used Isopropyl alcohol and an old brush to 'chip and wear' the green layer away on edges and in random areas - Dabbed on green Tim Holtz Ranger Distress Crackle paint - unfortunately they don't make this color anymore - Let it dry and crackle - Secret Weapons Amethyst (purple) wash loose all over - Another gloss spray - Brown oil wash - then let it dry for 2 days! - Then back and forth a lot, using VJ Rust and VJ Orange to brighten some areas of the spotty rust - also went back in here and there with VJ Pale Green - Some more dry-brushing Ryza Rust a little, then dry-brushed GW Boltgun to get non-rusty shiny edges in some areas - Gold was done using VJ Glorious Gold mixed 50/50 with GW Mithril Silver - the golds were later shaded with Liche Purple and VJ Armour Brown washes - Skulls and pelt were done using VJ Sand, also shaded with Liche Purple, highlighted with White - Woods and leather are done with VJ Armour Brown, highlighted with VJ Sand and washed with Armour Brown again - Skin was courtesy of Reaper Mouldy Skin, washed with Secret Weapons Algae (that's the blue tint) then wet-blend highlighted using the Ben Komet’s ‘loaded brush’ technique with Reaper Ghoul Skin and Reaper Bloodless Skin, lastly some pin-washes with Liche Purple for final shades - The tentacles were started similarly to the skin, then glazed with GW Liche Purple - which was too dark, so re-glazed with a Liche Purple/White mix - which was too pink, so in frustration I went back over them with the original Mouldy Skin watered down a little, wet-blended the highlights in the upper sides with the Ghoul and Bloodless Skin - accidentally added some stripes and liked them, so added some more, then on a whim lightly glazed the ends with Pale Green and used Algae wash to blend the body-to-tentacles transitions... yes, those tentacles were very complicated!

The newest Wretched Son is coming together rather well.
Body attached to legs, decided on a whim to add a crude exo-mechanic to one leg:
Fiddled with the right arm for ages, had to resort to custom-fitting the fore-arm, needs GS sculpting to get the taper from elbow join to wrist... though I might add some smaller exo-mechanics to add to the story of battle damage to that side of his body:
Here's the other side - I'm really liking this bolter with the cool strap:
Half-tilt on the bolter angle for added gangster:
Also in this pic you can see the final parts selected, with the typical Wretched Sons right shoulder-pad, the slightly Chaos-i-fied backpack, the left shoulder pad awaiting modification, the sheathed Old School Chaos scimitar and the three-piece left arm: Terminator upper, Stormcast forearm and Grey Knight terminator open hand.
Oh my. Oustanding conversion work and even better looking paintjobs. I'm afraid i can't really add anything but plain praise to the chorus.
You really know how to make them look like the unstoppable heralds of death and rot that they should be. Also nice to see that 'zerker scimitar put to good use. I'm looking forward towards seeing your further progress!

- I think the bionic bit is a section of an Admech Sicarian leg - it was previously used as the exo-gun-arm for one of my Inquisitor models but h elooked better without it (shameless plug for my Inqu][sitor blog)

- Unfortunately for the Wretched Sons, I think the new Nurgle models are just too Nurgle (Never go full Nurgle!!!) for me to use.
- The plain armour of the new Primaris Marine though - lookout kids, new Chaos fodder!
Contrary to my recent posting frequency, I have actually been managing some hobby time here and there...
First, the new Wretched Son called Bane (for obvious reasons) is ready for paint:
A second Blightking-converted partner (as yet un-named) for Bane is coming along too.
Space Wolf terminator legs 'Migs-ified', with my now-standard true-scale torso glued into place:
Glued on the Blightking Nurgle Fly gut-plate for added bloat, and carved the plaits off a Space Wolf terminator head.
He'll have some dendritic cables running into the side of his head.
One lower leg has also received the greenstuff treatment:
