So, has anyone taken a look at these for AoS? Honestly, they look like they might be pretty decent deals, comparatively. Could this be the fabled "easier to buy into the game" now?
Greenskinz, though. I guess the added z shows that they're ready for the 90's.

They are decent deals, if you get them from some online shops at 20% off then some of them are under half price vs standard retail price for the included kits. Also coming with a battalion warscroll per box set is nice. No idea how good those battalions are, but still a nice way of doing box sets like that.
Tempted by a couple myself.

I'm dangerously tempted by the seraphon box. The Carnosaurus RRP is 50 quid so you're basically getting warriors and cavalry for free. If only I didn't have sch a large lizardmen collection already :(

I like the lizards as well, I want a carnosaur anyway and some cav so awesome to get the cav for free. I just really don't like the old lizard warriors, but given they are basically freebies I can live with that.
However the ghost one is also tempting me, as is the nurgle one. I really like nurgle models and that starter set is definitely tempting me to start them.
I'l be interested in whether they do any more, skaven, different undead etc.
What I'd really like is a 'start collecting! Scenery' Box. I like GW scenery but always get put off by price. Give me £80 of scenery for £50 (and 20% off at discount) and they can have a wad of my money. An Occulum, Archway and Gate would be nice, or 2 woods, garden of morr and Arcane ruins.

The Nurgle one is pretty nice - the Plague Bearers are a lovely kit, Nurglings are always nice, and those plague drones minus the riders would make great fly-demons for Dungeons and Dragons.
There's also a herald of Nurgle in there that I didn't notice at first. I might pick one up. I hope GW do more kits like this, because I will buy them if they've got great minis in them at a reasonable price.

At Christmas, they had a Dreadhold box that basically had a free Skull Keep in it.

For £50?
I'm more interested in generic scenery. The sort of thing that anyone no matter which starter box they buy would look at and maybe also pick up.

These sets are amazing, no two ways about it.
I do agree the Malignant set is probably the worse just because the Coven Throne/Mortis Engine is a centrepiece you'll probably not want multiples of.
I find it interesting what the Malignant and Greenskinz sets mean for the future fluff too. It's interesting the undead one isn't called "Nighthaunt" as that is the keyword most ethereal units are given in the compendium - it's also interesting as under the 'Death' tab on the Webstore the 3 races are 'skeleton' 'mummy' and 'vampire' and these units are obviously not any of those.
I had guessed the Orcs would be taking a much more savage direction, but this set of Orcs has all the regular boyz and boar boyz. Does that mean Orcs too will remain largely unchanged?
Interesting.

I'm liking them. I am tempted by the Nurgle one just for the models because I've always liked the drones and the nurgle aesthetics for some reason.
$100 for the set or if I buy them individually its $70 for drones, $35 for the plague bearers, $30 for the herald and then $30 for the nurglings so that's $165 worth of models that's a good savings!
Also tempted by the tyranid one for 40k even tho I haven't touched my 40k armies in a long time

I'm hoping they do some of the other "old" factions too. The deals in these are great but with my collection as it is, none are overly attractive to me. Similar boxes for the Steamhead (old) dwarves, savage orcs, etc. would get me on the hook. Still hard to pass up the Nurgle one when I've been eying Plague Drones and Nurglings for a while now.

Interesting.
Not sure how much you can read into it. The three Chaos boxes are rebases of figures that are used alongside the Chaos factions (Nurgle,Khorne,Everchosen) that are currently active in the game. The remaining three are Order/Destruction/Death, filling out the remaining alliances. I think, in general, the non-human models will just get rebased factions with different fluff, like the Seraphon - at least for the time being.
There's four grand aliiances. Order has a ton of factions and models. Chaos has been getting a lot of love, having the one faction broken up into a half dozen factions with more uniqueness to it. Both Death and Destruction have relatively few models and factions. I think we'll end up seeing a lot more diversification, similar to what is happening to Chaos. I mean, those two alliances are nowhere near equal to Order/Chaos and really, there's not much reason to make them separate alliances if they only have a fraction of the variety. I think they'll probably keep all the existing factions (rebased, with new lore) and then, like Chaos, introduce new super-factions which ally with them and will ultimately become the new standard bearers for that alliance. So these Orks won't go away, but they'll be similar in function to the Chaos Warriors to the Khorne Bloodbound. Just my speculation though.

Yeah, that one is nice. Tempting for me because I've always wanted one of the big dinos, but never could justify the cost. I... still can't really justify it, but this set comes close.
Course, since I'm sticking to square bases, I'd have to deal with that somehow too.

I had a look through these sets yesterday and the only one I really didn't care for was the Greenskinz set. Orcs and Goblins are an iconic part of Warhammer, but the models just feel too outdated when compared to the other sets.

some of those are pretty good, some not so much, they are not better than the old battalion boxes, but they are far better than their 40k counterparts.

The savings are bigger than the savings on the battalion boxes (for example the Empire one only saves you £15 odd.) but I guess that's a reflection more of the price of miniatures from GW these days than anything else.
I think these starter sets are more important for 40k as they provide full rules for he miniatures right here in the box meaning a codex isn't essential.
Us AoS players are already used to that :-p

its not really just a matter of "savings" as much as the usefulness of the units involved. I tend to prefer my VC in AoS and this "starter" is pretty much a non starter for that faction. the first seraphon is ok, the second one blows. I get that its geared to new players, but those arent likely in my opinion to draw them in. they are expensive, and not really much variety and not appreciably cheaper than the battallions.

Don't they only include a formation? Don't you still need the rulebook and codex for individual model rules?

New WH40k boxes come only with the basic unit statline AFAIK. If the new "start collection" sets contain the full data sheets for the unit they are definitely an exception to the rule. That would be the AoS equivalent of no special rules aside from the Wound/Move/Br/Sv d-pad and some basic weapon statistics.

So for the Skitarii get started you need 2 codexes to use the contents? No I don't believe it for a second, these sets sound like they have everything ready to play out the box so the only other book you should need is the rulebook. I guess we'll know for sure come this weekend when they are released.
Anyway, a bit off topic in the AoS thread. I wonder if we'll have more of these released over time? It'll be interesting to see if one comes out with the Fyre Slayers or not.

I doubt there will be a discounted Fyreslayers package any time soon, unless there's one similar to the expansion sets for Stormcast and Khorne. I do hope there are more of these sets for the other armies. They're fantastic deals.

Curious point with the Malignants box is that all the units are ethereal. (OK, so the mortis engine is only 'mostly' ethereal...)

Oh yes, you're right! Well that'll be why the box is called "Malignant" and not "Nighthaunt" then. Seems only true ethereal units get the Nighthaunt keyword, although it does seem a bit redundant to have 2 keywords that 9/10 seem to be referring to the same thing.

Undead are certainly one of those where I could see several good and quite distinct themed starter sets. Vamps/Ghosts/Ghouls/zombies etc.
I'd have liked the Malignant set about 3 or 4 weeks ago though, before I bought my spirits. On the other hand the coven throne is sort of on my list and some more spirit hosts won't go amiss. Just need to know that the box does include the coven throne, given the box keeps saying mortis engine and I'm not sure on the sprues?
