The North

Had a little idea for a forum game after reading some of the posts over in the 'Fluff or Function' thread.

The idea is this: Warhammer 40K has plenty of background, though this doesn't necessarily fit with the tabletop experience.

Examples of this might involve Codex Space: Space Marines allied with Chaos Daemons, Tyranids allied with Orks and so on. It could be unit uses such as termicide (example below) where expensive 'elite' units are used as suicide squads, or maybe unit mixes (see my starting challenge).
Now, obviously you can come up with better examples where fluff and reality are at odds... better than I have given above!

In the example: Here is the 're-fluffing' of an in-game tactic

Someone earlier said they disapproved of Chaos Terminators as a suicide unit because fluff. WELL if Abbadon decided to make them them do that as punishment (seeing as he's not all that bright), it suddenly makes sense.

Rules of the game are simple:
1) Make up some legitimate fluff to excuse the strange tabletop reality posted by the person who posted before you!
2) Once you've forged the narrative, post your own challenge!
3) Remember, it must be legal in game terms
4) Bonus cookies if you forge something that's clever but not necessarily obvious
5) Obvious forum rules apply etc etc.

It's quite simple really. The cultists are in love with those Sisters and hope to convert them over to Slaanesh! The poor, deluded fools.

Tau and eldar.... Tau were fighting Slaanesh daemons and were losing. A passing craftworld saw this and, because of their hatred of Slaanesh, decided to help the Tau. The Tau let them help because of 1) Their losing really badly 2) They hope to convert them to the greater good. They defeat this band of daemons, but the Greater Daemon gets away. They both pursue it (the Tau because it is still in a Tau system and is a threat) and the Greater Daemon manipulates [whatever army you are playing on the tabletop] to get in the way. The makeshift alliance attacks the army to get to the Greater Daemon as quickly as possible.

Can someone please tell me the fluff of why GKs have so little options of units. If every daemon is different, and there is an infinite number of daemons, why do the GK have so little things to combat them? It would make sense, at least to me, that the GK (in the fluff) would have the variety of an entire normal space marine legion for EACH chaos god. Please could answer this.

Probably comes down to one thing, where are all chaos entities from? answer: the warp. What is the most potent tool to combat the warp? Psykers (I assume at least). Who are some of the most potent psykers in the galaxy? The grey knights.

Also it takes a LOT to train and outfit the grey knights with their signature equipment and capabilities, and I can't imagine psykers of their magnitude are in very large supply.

Also think of a similar question, why doesn't the imperium make even more space marines? Like a LOT more? Same issue with the greykights, the methods used to procure them are just not as plentiful as they would like.

The North

In the 41st millenium, a crack Astartes unit was ordered on a Crusade to repent by an Inquisitorial court for Heresy they didn't commit. These Marines promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Eye of Terror. Today, still wanted by the Inquisition, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire... The Astartes-Team.

Imagine the GK are in the warp pursuing and attacking a very dangerous Greater Daemon who could destroy entire galaxies and this is the only time they have a hope of sending it back into the warp is now. While assaulting the Greater Daemon and his host of lesser daemons, a rival host, of a lot less threat, who have a grudge against said Greater Daemon decide to attack at the same time as the GK. The GK, who need all the help they can get, decide to let the rival host help for the time being [for the tabletop game]. Afterwards they destroy the rival host. [If, on the tabletop, you are playing with a GK, daemon alliance, and are not going against daemons, your opponent's army is an illusion, they ARE the daemon host of the Greater Daemon, they are just using the warp around them to assume the shape of another army]

The Imperial Knights decide that the Tau really do represent the Greater Good for the universe and join them, but don't really trust the Tau not to either 1) Use them as cannon fodder/make them run point/use them for a suicide mission, or 2) turn on them at some point. Hence why they are desperate allies.
