Hi guys,

My first WiP blog, so hope that I wont mess the things up. Ok, here is my ongoing project, the very nice Forge World , Brass Scorpion.

I started it as usual, cleaning, puty-ing, and pinning the whole model, then primed it in black.

I then started with the main body underbelly. Its very nicely detailed with cables, lines, ducts, bodies, etc.., so I started in putting some colors on all theses to have an idea of how it gonna looks like.

I then started to add the high and lows..., and finally the "brass" parts and cables were painted.

The belly is not done yet, as I will start to work on the armor plates, and will refine the things later on.

That's it for now, thanks in having a look...

Looking amazing so far, can't wait to see the finished model if it's all gonna be at this quality.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Thanks in following up guys..

I too would love to learn more about this effect. The red is beautiful. If the rest of the machine is going to look as beautiful as it has thus far, we are all in for a real treat. Nice job!

Hi guys,

Thanks much for your comments, glad to know you like it..as its a bit of classic design in WH40K world. I do like it much as it match the idea of Chaos...an "unconfortable" permanent state of change...

Ok, for now I am working on the legs tubing and cabling, so I didn't do any further work on armor plates. I am actually waiting for the customer to approve...or not... this design.

I hope he will approve it ...and then yes...the whole armor plates will be done that way.

I will then make a little tutorial about it, no worries. Its pretty straight forward and require no special skills.

Once again thanks in having a look on my stuff and liking it.

Frank.

Looks great Frank! We all love it! I for one am very excited for a tutorial, as I would love to learn how to make such a beautiful effect. Very lucky client - I agree that the client would be insane to pass this up.

Hi guys,

Thanks much for your great comments, it really is a great thing when you have so much work to do on a project like this one..!

As promised here is a little tutorial on how to do this peculiar "marble" effect.

Ok, to start, let speak a bit about technics ( no worries, will try to make it short).., this 'faux marble' technic is adapted from what is done usually on paper by Italian artists. Basically its very thinned oils paints that is dropped on a bath of water. The painter then create some design in using a fine stick to pull and steer on the paint . Once happy with the design he will put a sheet of paper on top of it that will absorb most of the oil paint...as it is...obtaining a "print" of it. Also Turkish use this technic to draw flowers or kind of design.

Now...in our case...we cant do that ...because it only work on flat surfaces...so, we have to simulate it using our acrylics.

I use mainly Vallejo colors..., black, dark red, red, orange and yellow.

First I paint crudely the surface of the subject using dark red, here one of the dorsal armor plate of the Brass Scorpion :

First color used is the black, a bit more thinned than usual, this will provide me with the base of the design, its totally randomly painted, keep in mind its a fluid design, so over all it follow the same "waves" :

Next is the dark red around the black lines , on again its done randomly..but keeping the same "waves"..:

After that ...red ...same thing...following the previous "waves", always keeping in mind the fluidity and random element...also its a continuity...like your drawing lines doesn't end...but go around and back...:

Orange...jonce again more thinned than usual...using wide to very fine lines in "wavy/curvy" motion..:

Now you can see your main design appearing..., remember keep it fluid , random ( lines can be offset from each other), and ...continuity..:

As your design take shape, you proceed all the way again..., starting with black...to the lighter colors...:

At the end you refine and clean all the lines you have done..., there is no special order to follow..., but your end result must be neat...its important to show a very fluid design ...here is what you get at the end of the process after 10 or 15 layers and more clean up and refining of your lines...:

As I said nothing difficult...beside the random continuity with a fluid design..., please don't hesitate to let me know if you need further explanation.

Thanks much in having a look, see you soon with the end of the build...

Frank.

Very nice work on the Scorpion, Bluewing, and a good tutorial on the painting approach for the armour plates - I imagine your client is going to be very happy when they receive the final product.

I would echo STG's question, though - do you glaze and/or vanish the armour when you've finished adding the swirls to it, to get that glistening effect?

Wow the effect is amazing, and thank you for presenting the tutorial. Aside from the questions about the varnish you use, is there also a red wash or a red glaze? The final red is so vibrant. Love the effect, almost looks like red marble. Thank you too for following up with your promise!
