Sorry if the formatting is weird.

Madrak Ironhide
Krielstone Bearer and 2 Stone Scribes
Stonescribe Elder
Troll Axer
2xTroll Impalers
Diretroll (Bomber, Blitzer, Vixen or Rudolph) Its going to be magz'ed.

You think thats a good list? Or do I need MOAR!

My buddy is playing Skorne and it seems like he has a gillion models in a 50pt list.

Well, in Warmachine you aren't allowed to have an army list that's more than two points below the points limit for whatever size game you're playing. The list you have right now (assuming you mean three stone scribes - the unit comes as a four-model minimum unit or a six-model maximum unit) is 30 points total (24 after you subtract Madrak's 6 free warbeast points), so you can run it in a 25-point game, even though you'd be a point down. You would need twice as much stuff to play a 50-point game, but that's okay, because traditionally you learn to play with the battlebox. Unfortunately the troll battlebox is pretty bad, but you could always try something like:

Madrak Ironhide, Thornwood Chieftain +6
- Dire Troll Mauler 9
- Troll Axer 6 (15)
- Troll Impaler 5 (20)
- Troll Impaler 5 (25)
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes Max 4 (29)
- Stone Scribe Elder 1(30)
Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew 1 (31)

That way you could play a 25-point game.

To be honest, I'm stoked, because my buddy's Skorne army at 50 points has a crap load more minis. That war room app is not easy to understand. So.... 1 warlock and some beasts.... no FOC....

Also any suggestions for next steps to get to 35pts? Do you have suggestions other than TBs starter box? Traveling to FLGS tomorrow.

The krielstone guy was highly recommended. Another warlock? Minis to bring me to 35 pts? Solos? Minions? Give up?

Sorry, I forgot I replied to this thread! Okay, so you have a minimum unit of Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes. You probably want to see if you can find the extra two Stone Scribes somewhere. Privateer used to sell the unit as what you have and an additional blister with two more Stone Scribes, but a while ago they switched to just a full unit box. It might be a bit harder to find them as a result, but they're probably out there.

Going to 35 points you'll probably want a unit. Fennblades with their unit attachment are ten points and might work well enough with Madrak. Or you could try Kriel Warriors, who are a bit different but have a similar role to the Fennblades.

If you would like to run the Axer and two Impalers, the Stone Scribe Chronicler could be good to pick up. Then you could run something like:

Madrak Ironhide, Thornwood Chieftain 6 WB (-6)
- Troll Axer 6 (0)
- Troll Impaler 5 (5)
- Troll Impaler 5 (10)
- Dire Troll Mauler 9 (19)
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (Min) 3 (22)
- Stone Scribe Elder 1 (23)
Trollkin Fennblades 8 (31)
- Trollkin Fennblade Officer & Drummer 2 (33)
Stone Scribe Chronicler 2 (35)

Or if you prefer the Kriel Warriors, they would fit in the list too. You could even take them with a Fell Caller instead of the Chronicler and they would be super accurate. Madrak's feat goes well with Reach weapons, though, so Fennblades might have a bit of an advantage there. I don't know! But a unit of solid core infantry is where I would go from what you have. The gist is that Fennblades are really fast and good at getting the first strike in, but Kriel Warriors are more durable.

The Chronicler is a little guy who can give out some buffs to infantry, including a buff that makes them very dangerous if you can trigger it, and with three light beasts with reach you're in a pretty good position to do that where it counts.

I have almost no experience playing against Skorne, so I can't really provide much advice on that front. Their heavy beasts do a truly incredible amount of damage, so don't expect anything to survive if one can reach it.

Use War Room though! It's really good, especially for window shopping.

@HiveFleet:

Hah!!!! What fortuitous advice! Yesterday I was at the FLGS and guess what I picked up? Chronicler and 2x Stone scribes and Grissel. No Fennblades there, although they did have the Longriders. On advice of a local I didn't get them yet though. Here's what I have now:

1x Grissel
1x Madrak

2x Troll Impalers
1x Troll Axer
1x Dire Troll Mauler/Blitzer/Bomber

1x Stone Scribe Chronicaler

4x Stone Scribes
1x Kriel Stone Bearer
1x Stone Scribe Elder

No Fennblades though.... They did have Higwaymen though. Are they good or different or what?

Played a practice game last night. We messed up some rules. It seems COMPLEX compared to 40k.

You're going to find the game overwhelming if you jump in at 35 points. You'll probably survive, though. Hopefully you have some more experienced players around to help with the rules?

You should have five Stone Scribes now, right? I see three in the picture, and you bought the blister with two more, which should be the full unit.

You have a good start. You're going to have a problem in the long run that you won't want to run the axer, impalers and mauler all in the same list. They also generate way too much fury for poor Madrak to handle.

Fennblades are a fast, lightly-armoured (for trolls) infantry unit. They have a good threat range and the officer can make them charge further once a game. They also get Vengeance, which means if one of them dies then next turn they all get to move three inches and make an attack (though often you'll want to use the movement to set up good charges rather than use the weak attack and not be able to charge to do damage later).

Highwaymen are weird. They are a shooting unit, but for the most part the faction doesn't have any shooting support. I'm not 100% sure when would be the best time to take them if you're not running Gunnbjorn or Hunters Grim or something. Maybe stay away for the time being?

Grissel is cool, too. I really like her!

Long Riders are a strange unit. They're extremely powerful when they're allowed to do their thing, but if your opponent has a way to prevent them from charging, such as anything that provides a penalty to speed or a way to stop orders (like Grissel has as an ability and a feat, for example) they are not very good at all. I have found that generally either my opponent does not have an answer to them and they are ruinously powerful or my opponent does have an answer to them and they have trouble doing much other than getting in the way a bit. It can be frustrating because they're quite an expensive unit, especially given you will usually want to take Horthol, Long Rider Hero with them, bringing the total points cost up to 16! Also they are big heavy metal models and quite pricey.

I maintain your best bet to start with is to get a solid core infantry unit like Fennblades or Kriel Warriors and go from there. Maybe someone else who is reading the thread has a different opinion.

From my experience with the Trolls, which is admittedly limited, but, when I faced against them, it was Hunter's Grim, and they were a pain in the bullocks to fight due to the Mirage spell moving them around, and decent CRA's from them, plus the two shots. They weren't the scariest unit I have ever faced, but they peppered my infantry pretty well. I think them and an Impaler would work because I believe it has Far Strike, giving them +4 range, so they have a decent reach on those pistols, they just don't seem to be great shots, but if they stood still and aimed, I could see them being a decent threat with that as well if you don't want to use Hunters Grim, since his Mirage spell lets them move every control phase, but it would probably be better used on Fenblades IMO.

I think for now, since you're starting out with them, take Fenblades and their UA, they'll help fill out your list pretty well, and can be pretty strong in melee, I feel like the Highwaymen might actually disapoint you since they can't bring the pain, shooting only 8' POW 10 pistols, compared to the Fenblade's POW 12 swords, on the charge they can dumptruck someone pretty well, and the minifeat allows them to move faster, makes them cause terror, and gives them pathfinder, so you move faster, through terrain, and spook the hell out of the unit you're hitting. plus, they look pretty sweet IMO.

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

Keep in mind, the impaler animus just goes on a model, not a whole unit, so it's probably not very good for them outside of very specific niche situations.

Hunters Grim give them snipe on the feat turn, so you might be remembering that. It seems like a pretty good thing for them to have, plus mark target can probably help with their accuracy.

That could be it, I haven't played against that in about two months, so I'm going off of foggy memories, but I thought it might be better than nothing.
