**I realize this ToC is woefully behind. It's low on the to do list, but it's there **

Hey all, so I decided to go ahead and make a P&M blog...I build commission custom terrain for all kinds of games and I'm hopeful that I can share my work here and do 2 things:

1. Post plenty of WIP pictures and get/give ideas for terrain building. This is really important to me! I love the shared knowledge sites like this promote, so bring on the constructive criticism and coomments!

2. Show off some finished stuff when life gets too crazy to build terrain. (so..most of the time :p)

So, if you see something you like, leave a comment. If you see something that you know how to do better, please tell me!
Apologies in advance if some of this stuff is redundant to you people who have been following on facebook.

Thanks for looking!

Oh wow. Those gibbets are really cool.

Also love the ruined building with the bunting.

The gibbets are actually pretty simple to make. I wish i remembered where I saw the idea so I can credit it.

Materials are round 25mm bases, cocktail sticks, florists wire, mdf bases and bitz.

Here's the original photo I worked from. Don't have my own WIP for this one unfortunately. Definitely something I wish I had done more of in the past!

Alright, here is my current project.

It's a large 40k Ork ________ ..I need a title for this beast!

Basically, I've been making some smaller pieces and right now only have one comission, so wanted to make something bug while I had the chance. Some game store or dedicated player is going to appreciate it haha.

Anyways, what I have so far is the base of the model. I ran out of foamboard and the store was out, so i reverted to *shudder* cardboard. Had to add a crap ton of reinforcement to keep the stupid stuff from folding, but I'm getting there.

So I roughed out 2 buildings and started building one of the main features - a GIANT LIGHT-UP ROCKET!!! I wired 4 red LEDs into the main body of the rocket so the light will travel through the clear tube and make it look like it glows from inside. Unfortunately, my switch doesn't work or is shorting or something because I pretty much melted a 9v battery when I turned the switch to off. ...new switch on its way. Does anyone have good sources for getting cheap electrical parts from anywhere but china? this 3 week ship time kills me...

In the meantime, I have a lot of work to do on the outside of the buildings - adding texture and spiky bits and rust all over the place. I use baking soda in CA glue (superglue) to make the rust. since CA glue uses an acidic inhibitor to keep it from setting up in the tube, the basic baking soda insta-sets it and makes cool textures.

That's all for now. more gluing for tonight...

Alright, update. I've added a lot more bits to both buildings to cover up the ugly cardboard and add depth/ texture etc. I've been using a lot of the same things usually do, but in case you guys haven't thought of some of these for use as Ork wall bitz, here's a list:

corrugated paper made with a paper crimper
plasticard from whatever I had lying around
some plastic from some sample cards given out by an industrial lighting mfg company
"granny grate"
craft and cocktail sticks
random plastic bits

__________________________________________

Went ahead and cast a copy of a few pieces from my Maelstrom's edge terrain sprue These things are really hand for adding detail to terrain! I'm going to do a whole project log on some terrain using their bits so everyone can get a better idea of what possibilities there are with this sprue.

__________________________________________
Last major thing I added was a scratch-built gun for the secondary tower part of the complex. I used a 1/4" headphone jack and added a lot of pieces from an old Russian tank made l I've been scavenging for a while. Turned out pretty well. After I had built it, I wasn't sure if everyone would want it or if they played it as a heavy turret or something and wanted to make it destructible then it shouldn't be permanent. So I added a metal pin and make a matching hole for it on the tower. So now you can take it out or just leave it.

Aaaand that's it for today. Going to be a few days before another update. Till then let me know what you think!

Another update:

Almost finished adding bits to the surfaces of the buildings...so much surface area to cover. For time's sake as well as visually distinguishing the towers from the bases, I used larger, lower profile pieces of card for the bottom sections of the buildings. Framed in a few windows - those turned out pretty good!

Added the second ramp up to the rocket building and a few strips to stop models from sliding off. - There is going to be a ladder from that point up , as well as the other side of the building. That's mostly due to poor planning on my part - a slightly larger base and I could have added more ramps...oh well - next time! And with the ladders, they can be removable if the owner of the piece wants them to be.

A new material I found is these large zip-ties you see in the pictures. I cut them into strips and used them to trim out the buildings. They were being sold for strapping down or hanging air ducting. I think they were about 36"/95cm, so lots to work with!

I've been asked a few times how I do wood pieces. I use a serrated knife like the one pictured and drag it through soft wood or plastic card to get a grain. It needs to have smaller serrations or it will only make 2 or 3 grooves.

added a second coat of PVA to all paper-based bits like the corrugated paper and the card. should give it some rigidity and durability.

Next is finished the bits then texturing the base. I'm thinking about adding some piles of crates and stuff here and there.

Let me know if I'm missing a really cool add on before it's too late!

That Ork base is looking amazing, cant wait to see it painted.

On the subject of rivets, I recently started buying mine. They come in all different types and sizes, and are such a time saver. although the 0.8mm ones can be tricky to handle .

Here's where I got them from, in case your interested:

Did the final touchups - removed the ubiquitous dog hair that got caught in the PVA, removed any evidence that I used hot glue, added a few more bits and touched up a couple of areas of the ground that had a PVA landslide. That's what happens when you overdo it with the PVA.

--side note-- When affixing ground texture, it's better if you can place the texture then spray with water/PVA mix. I live in a REALLY humid place, so if I do this then I have to wait 2 days for it to dry...

Also added a pallet with some crates and junk 'round back cause that obviously belongs there haha.

Primed with some cheap matte black spray paint and added the basecoat (dark brown)

This is one of my favorite parts of the build process - when you first get some paint on it, even if it's just the primer. It hides all the colors of the junk you used to build it and shows what you previously could only see in your head. all the shapes and textures. Unfortunately that's where I'll have to stop until the weekend. I also have a monthly commission for a dozen minis at tabletop standard to get done. Can't wait to get more paint on this!

Got some base colors on all the metal bits and yellow bits. Started layering on the drybrushing for the ground, but wasn't happy with it, so I gave it a light wash with black and smokey inks to bring back the contrast. It should be good once I add in a few light drybrushes.

I'm really liking the continuity that buried cable gives :p

I've finished all of the base colors and drybrushed the wood pieces since that will be the messiest. It look kinda cartooney now since everything is so flat-coloured, but I wanted to update since it's been a little while.

Went ahead and started in on distressing the yellow-painted metals since those tend to be easiest for me and it's been a little while since I've done any. The method I use it to paint the piece with a brighter version of the color I want it to be, then using a darker silver, paint all of the areas I want to be chipped. Then use a lighter silver (I use an enamel silver) to highlight the edges. Lastly, a few washes of different inks and paints to finish it out. Sometimes the metal bits need a little re-highlighting to bring out the worn areas again.

I snapped these photos on my phone immediately after the first layer of washes went on, so pardon the quality.

I'd be really interested in hearing any tips anyone has on painting worn, chipped colored metal! It's not something I'm very good at and would like to get better.

Added a round of washes everywhere and started i non the detail weathering. I'm going with drippy rust and patchy rust mixed in where appropriate.

Started painting the rocket - just decided to take a page from Fallout and paint it all red.

Not a whole lot left, just need to redo/touch up the ground - I'm still not happy with it yet - and add in some dead grass here and there. Finish up the weathering, and I'll probably add in a few posters or warning signs from my collection too.

Oh, and I still have to paint on a few checkered areas!

Alright, i put these 3 pieces together using the Maelstrom's edge terrain sprue pieces. My goal was to see how fast it was to build compared to full out scratch building and to see how much variety I could get using the provided pieces. I gave all of the pieces a black wash after priming them to try to help out the WiP photo quality, but after handling I might have jsut made it worse

I timed myself and it took about an hour to put all 3 pieces together - now, I haven't added any final details or textured, but that's a pretty good time. I tried to avoid using any specialty bitz or pieces and just stick to what is typically available to the common terrain creator. I started with an empty screw box for what we'll call piece 1 (the slopey bunker), an old container for something for piece 2 (the rounded building) and a paper coffee cup and juice bottle lid for piece 3 (the round one).

Adding on the bits was really easy and natural - had a bi of trouble with the round piece. I probably wouldn't make a round one again. But a candle and some patience and I was able to round them off enough to pass muster.

Also, I'm really happy with the crate I made from 5 of the square panel pieces. After I glued it on I wished I had made a mold the stupid thing so I don't have to keep building them haha.

I'll add on a few more bits and texture next, then we can see how they look painted up! Any suggestions on color schemes? I want to make them stand out a lot. Obvious choice seems to be White buildings with some color highlights or make just pale concrete. Or make the ground mostly grass so there's a lot of green? Other?

All for today!
