I remember seeing a thread somewhere where somebody used Tomorrow's War to play Warhammer 40k because the rules are more interesting. Has anybody tried this?

There is a really good game hidden within the TW rulebook. Its just obfuscated by the byzantine layout of the book. Its supposedly to help teach the game by introducing elements by scenario, by ends up just scattering rules all through the book.

If you know someone who knows the game and can teach it, its great. Otherwise, prepare to go through the tutorial scenarios one by one in order to figure out all the elements.

It could do 40K no problem.

I have used it for Star Wars and home-brew setting mostly. Most of my stuff has been infantry vs. infantry. The game can handle all vehicle combat or infantry and vehicles as well, but I just don't have a lot of interest in that.

I think this game works really well for similar forces such as IG vs. Lost and the Damned traitor guard. It can also handle Tau, Orks, and Eldar fine. However, it struggles a bit when you get a bit too far away from that as it is not designed for Space Marine archetypes and Tyranid style beasties.

The rules can be a bit tough, and I think it helps if you have read the Force-on-Force rulebook as well. Wrapping your head around the action/reaction mechanic can be a bit of a challenge.

I found that coming from a 40K game to Tomorrow's War can be a bit frustrating as things that work in one simply will not work in the other, tactically speaking. You have to re-learn some of the tricks of the trade and that can take a bit of a learning curve.

I really like TW and FOF though, so I am a bit biased.

This is basically my opinion as well. I played it a few times through with a friend, without whose explanations it would have been indecipherable. However after a few games I still hadn't fallen in love with the game and haven't played since. I guess I just like my sci-fi "softer". If you like "reaction" style games, but think that the Two Hour Wargames systems take a bit too much control away from the players, then Tomorrow's war may be a good option for you.

I've used it to run a "space marines" v "guard" game.

10 marines with a razorback v 30 guardsmen (of varying quality) and a chimera for support.

This was before the "dagger or talon" book came out, though - and although the marines fought closer to how they should on tabletop according to fluff, it was a close game.

I'm planning to redo the game using the BDOT stuff - and I can do the crusty stuff v humans using my old guard stuff and modified kroot models (going to sculpt new heads for them). The crusties will get a couple of enhanced suits (think the battlesuit from District 9) but the human forces will have their own powered armour support.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

For a less wonky reaction system, you might check the Star Grunt II rules from Ground Zero Games (free on their website to download). Similar turn sequence (activating units alternating between players throughout the turn instead of UGOIGO), and the inspiration for the Ambush Alley/Force on Force/Tomorrows War series.

I still play TW with folks here. Scenario design tends to be the hardest part without a points system to help find some balance between forces. I found it refreshing after years of WH40K 4th ed.

Has anyone used this as a replacement for Robotech RPG tactics?

If so, how did it go?

I have not used this. I might have to try it. Horizon Wars works pretty good with Robotech RPG Tactics models.

Forgot about Horizon Wars. Thanks for the suggestion.
