I'm looking for any recommendations for replacement bases. I've got quite a few older 40k marine models with 25mm bases and a lot of parts to build some more marines and chaos marines. As I will have newer models on 32mm bases I might as well put the older models on them when I re-paint and base them. I'd prefer everything to be the same size.

I could just buy a job-lot of standard black plastic bases but as I'm going to be getting a lot at once I thought it was worth checking out if there were better options. I've seen people talk about MDF or acrylic bases and these look interesting as I assume they have more weight and make the minis more stable. I also imagine that pinning the minis is easier with more substance to the base. My Space Wolves are being based on rock and snow covered bases so something plain is all I'm after.

While I'm at it - I also have jump pack troops and fitting some of them to flier bases would be good. Any idea what would be good for this? Some of those models are older metal ones with metal jumppacks(!) so a lot of weight and some careful weight distribution may be required.

Are there any general recommendations for base types and more specific recommendations for suppliers in the UK?

I've recently using mdf bases to rebase a lot of 40k stuff. The mdf is very light but the trick is what you use to build it up when you are modelling. I use tile grout(get a tub from B+Q) which is very gritty and great for a dirt effect. You can get a lot of bases very cheaply; there are a few sellers on ebay offering similar prices. They tend to be in two thicknesses,2mm and 3mm,I'd recommend 3mm for the extra height. If you opt for 2mm you can superglue a plastic based figure so there won't be too much of a height difference.
Also look out for the sellers who are using laser cutters to detail mdf bases/I seen one set that had been lasered to look like a cracked river bed.

I havve ordered over 50 bases from this company and they have all been exceedingly excellent quality. I personally am going with their Urban Battleground set, and have sets of mostly 32mm, but have also purchased 10 of their 25mm set for my scouts, as well as one 60mm base for my eventual Librarian Dreadnought.

The price is also quite reasonable for packs of 10x 32mm bases; just $6.50 before shipping.

They paint up fantastic an look great with urban greyscale shades as I've painted them up here.

Highly recommended here. Just offering that as an alternative to MDF or Acrylic bases. Hope it's helpful.
