I have moved the photos from my original post to this post so that the first post on this thread can be the most up to date photos of my Death Guard.
I suffer from a bad habit of never being quite happy with my paint jobs so I repaint here and there (Shut up, Ben) and as such I feel it appropriate that the first post of the thread properly represent my current progress.

Update #1.1

A couple of minor updates to the Mortarion's scythe shaft/cloak (and a few other less noticeable areas) along with less intense lighting:

The Deathshroud have been dispatched and should be here within the week. I've also primed, basecoated, and washed another Legion Veteran Squad along with a Heavy Flamer wielding Heavy Weapons Squad.
Today I will be making the finishing touches to the Imperial Knights which will be fighting alongside my Death Guard as allies so I will probably add photos of them later.
I did not originally intend on doing so but I am proud of the way they turned out so cannot resist!

Update #1.2
So, this is the first unrelated update to pass the time. Included are two nearly complete Knights of House Mortan... sort of. I've painted them in a scheme which is inspired by House Mortan but fluff-wise House Mortan Knights have no place alongside 30k Death Guard because they weren't rediscovered until M35... soooo, House Mortan unless I'm using them in 30k in which case they are Freeblades?

Cool. Liking the DG. Interesting to see some a 40k DG army with a bit more.nurgle taint. I like the rust on the LR. Nice catch considering it came from a primer problem.

Thanks evildrcheese. The Horus Heresy novels always gave me the impression that the late pre-heresy Death Guard didn't really take care of (or clean) their armour so decided to give it a shot. I think it worked alright.

It's been a long time. But like a true son of Mortarion I have been doing my best to stubbornly push onwards and do a better job painting my Death Guard.
Since I last posted here I have done the following:
- Repainted my Veteran Squads to look a little cleaner (at least for now - more grime will be added later. I just felt like I could do a better job on the initial paint job. And I sort of feel as if I have succeeded but I'll let you guys be the judge).
- Painted up three of my Deathshroud, two more are in the process of being painted.
- Constructed some Sisters of Silence allies for my Death Guard (cannot begin to explain how psyched I am that GWS released these lovely ladies, and they fit so perfectly next to my DG what with the events at the beginning of Flight of the Eisenstein).
- Constructed 28 Tactical Marines (2x14) to make up the main body of my Death Guard force (I'm trying to go for a fluffy army, so a lot of foot slogging Marines with Medusas loaded up with Phosphex!)

Alpharius conversion!

According to his loadout he has the Pale Spear and a Plasma Blaster but the miniature Kabuki Studio has available doesn't really represent that too well so I did a bit of kit bashing. I replaced the head simply because the heads Kabuki Studio miniatures sculpts lack detail where GWS heads are a little more exaggerated (which makes for more expressive faces).

So I am currently working on adding some Heavy Support/Tactical Support squads into the mix (I decided it would be prudent to get some Missile Launchers, Autocannons and Plasma Guns).

The Autocannons are all converted from the Heavy Bolters found in Betrayal at Calth and Burning of Prospero - I simply hacked off the barrels and replaced them with a combination of smaller autocannon barrels and heavy stubber barrels - anything which gave the appearance of being an Autocannon. Plus, I like the underslung, ammo-drum look so I think it worked out pretty nicely.

The Plasma Guns are all from leftovers from my Space Wolves - having ~5000pts of Harald Deathwolf's Great Company gives you a lot of spare bits. Before I paint them up I will probably green stuff the rune on the barrel so that they don't have distinctive markings which make them look like Space Wolf gear.

The Missile Launchers are Imperial Guard weapons team Missile Launchers (leftovers from my Tallarn Desert Raiders who tend to use Autocannons/Lascannons). I thought the old-style junky-look for the Launchers suited the aesthetic I was trying to achieve for the Death Guard as not-particularly-well-equipped-but-stubborn-as-all-hell.

It's been a slow couple of weeks.
First, because I have been working on my other blog (The Space Rhinos, I recommend checking them out, they are shaping up nicely)
Second, because I have been ill for the last week or so. And unlike Mortarion I don't take virus' and all that goodness in my stride when it comes to painting.

But I do have an update:

(or very Chaosy Chaplain)

I know it's not entirely canon friendly to have a chaplain with this much chaosyness but with the release of the new Death Guard rules in the Traitor Legions supplement I have decided to field these in 40k as well as 30k.
And let's be honest - Plague Zombie horde ees kewel. So I've picked up some Fantasy Zambies and kit bashed this gentleman to represent my Lost and Damned!

Nice work on the Chaplain, it totally works as the Apostle.

Thanks! I am happy with how he turned out - I really like the possessed head used as a Chaplain helmet, it looks like a dark parody of the traditional Chaplain helmets.

Three new sons of Mortarion: (1) Solun Decius; (2) Centurion w/ The Barbaran Thurible; (3) Dreadnought.
I essentially completed all three in fairly rapid succession so none of them made it onto my blog before their (near) completion.

I used the thunder hammer from Burning of Prospero as the handle - I wanted something long enough that it'd fit the item description (which describes the thurible more like a standard/banner) but short enough that it actually looks like what a thurible really is haha. So it seemed appropriate.
The rest of it is created from the Servo Skull that comes with the Militarum Tempestus Scions set if memory serves - I basically just cut it up into its component parts and rearranged it so that the skull itself was at the head of the staff/handle (looks a bit like a Crozius Arcanum) and dangling from the base of the skull is the smelly ball of Barbaran gas.
Turned out alright! Think I would have preferred using chain though - I am going to keep an eye out, might swap it out yet.

Those are some seriously vibrant colours, they look excellent. Also, those characters, especially the guy with the stormbolter, are really beautiful.

I've been toying worth getting into 30k Death Guard for a while now and these are just seriously excellent. I especially love your Lord of the Flies and the patterning on the Dark Apostle. Looking forward to your Sisters!

Finally a fresh (sort of) new addition to my Death Guard.
I have about 30 Plague Marines incoming too. The Pallid Hand will be my 30k army in 40k form!
I also got a Light Box so will he rephotographing my way through my Death Guard (these photos are all rather dated at this point, I've completed a few more models).

Now this guy I like I've got a bit of a thing for 40k Chaos Legions in 30k colours. Just doesn't make sense for me that they'd lose the Heresy, retreat to the eye...and instantly sit down for a year or two repainting all of their kit.

Yeaaaah! I agree, it's why I decided to try and go for an off-white green colour rather than the old aged white I use for my 30k army. I kinda want to both keep them looking reminiscent of 30k Death Guard while also making them look like they've had a rough 10,000 years.

My first time back onto this thread in a while, I have remained actively painting but most of my stuff ends up on Instagram because it’s quick and I’m usually strapped for time.
This guy is my first attempt at NonMetallic Metal and the Freehanded skull is probably my... third? Maybe second. In any case, I’m fairly happy with it!
