Plano, Texas

I'm building a 1000 point Imperial Guard army for one-off games on the slower gaming nights while the local fantasy league is playing out on the weekends. However, finances allowing, I *may* go up in points, up to a possible 1850.

The trouble is, I'm having a heck of a time deciding what list to go with, before I finish building everything. Mainly, what heavy weapons.

So, here is the first list:

Doctrines: Allow Stormtroopers (I know, I know.. stormtroopers suck... I have the models though, and want to use them), Light Infantry, Close Order Drill, Iron Discipline, don't *need* a fifth doctrine but either drop troops because it's free, or rough riders for future army lists.

HQ:
Command Platoon-
Command Squad: 4x lasguns, ID, LI. Junior Officer (LP/CCW) - 55

Elites:
Stormtroopers: 2x hellguns, 2x plasma guns, sgt /w hellpistol. Infiltrate - 75

Troops-
Infantry Platoon- (300)
     Command Squad: 2x lasguns, 1x plasma gun, 1x lascannon. Junior Officer /w LP/CCW. ID, LI. - 90
Infantry Squad: 7x Lasguns, 1x Plasma Gun, 1x Lascannon, Sgt./w lasgun. LI. - 105
Infantry Squad: 7x Lasguns, 1x Plasma Gun, 1x Lascannon, Sgt./w lasgun. LI. - 105

Infantry Platoon- (300)
     Command Squad: 2x lasguns, 1x plasma gun, 1x lascannon. Junior Officer /w LP/CCW. ID, LI. - 90
Infantry Squad: 7x Lasguns, 1x Plasma Gun, 1x Lascannon, Sgt./w lasgun. LI. - 105
Infantry Squad: 7x Lasguns, 1x Plasma Gun, 1x Lascannon, Sgt./w lasgun. LI. - 105

Heavy Support-
Basilisk: Indirect Training - 125
Leman Russ Battle Tank: hull heavy bolter - 145

Ok, so that was list #1. It breaks down to 6 lascannons, and 8 plasma guns.

Now for list #2:

Doctrines: Allow Stormtroopers (I know, I know.. stormtroopers suck... I have the models though, and want to use them), Light Infantry, Close Order Drill, Iron Discipline, Cameleoline Cloaks (henceforth referred to as "camo")

HQ:
Command Platoon-
Command Squad: 4x lasguns, ID, Camo. Junior Officer (LP/CCW) - 55

Elites:
Stormtroopers: 2x hellguns, 2x plasma guns, sgt /w hellpistol. Infiltrate - 75

Troops-
Infantry Platoon- (300)
Command Squad: 2x lasguns, 1x plasma gun, 1x Missile Launcher. Junior Officer /w LP/CCW. ID, LI, Camo. - 90
Infantry Squad: 7x Lasguns, 1x Plasma Gun, 1x Missile Launcher, Sgt./w lasgun. LI, Camo. - 105
Infantry Squad: 7x Lasguns, 1x Plasma Gun, 1x Missile Launcher, Sgt./w lasgun. LI, Camo. - 105

Infantry Platoon- (300)
Command Squad: 2x lasguns, 1x plasma gun, 1x Missile Launcher. Junior Officer /w LP/CCW. ID, LI, Camo. - 90
Infantry Squad: 7x Lasguns, 1x Plasma Gun, 1x Missile Launcher, Sgt./w lasgun. LI, Camo. - 105
Infantry Squad: 7x Lasguns, 1x Plasma Gun, 1x Missile Launcher, Sgt./w lasgun. LI, Camo. - 105

Heavy Support-
Basilisk: Indirect Training - 125
Leman Russ Battle Tank: hull heavy bolter - 145

All the points stayed the same, but in this list, I lose lascannons in favor of missile launchers, lose infiltrate on the command platoon, but gain cameleoline cloaks on everything.

Now, some points of contention: 1) I like the look of missile launchers. They fit in with the infiltrating theme, because they look much more mobile than a bulky lascannon on a tripod with a power supply hanging off the side... but I know that by taking missile launchers I basically lynch myself if I have to face a number of terminators or oblits, or a godzilla army that takes carapace. In addition, I will have a hard time against AV14. I have plasma to help with AP2 support, but nothing with good range. If I were ONLY doing a 1000pt army, I'd just stick to missile launchers, but I know there is a chance I will expand the army further, and don't like the idea of having to convert all my ML HW team bases into lascannon teams.

2) I like theme, and I'm not out to powergame and rule the gaming area here, but at the same time, I don't want a stinker army that can't win (like my marines).

3) The more guardsmen I assemble, the more I realize that I don't want to sculpt ~60+ cloaks for them... I'm already spending an ass-ton of time on their bases (each having a unique industrial style base)

So, what is the verdict of the mighty dakka members? Go with the reliable las/plas, or screw efficiency and sanity, go with the missile launchers, and sculpt those cloaks for the guard?

I say thank ya in advance,

~G

The Hammer

I'd vote list one, for the reasons you outline yourself. +1 cover save is useful only while you're in cover, pain to model, and you forfeit the flexibility of the lascannon in dealing with heavier targets. I would be inclined to give the Stormies Deep Strike over infiltrate however. The heavy and special in the command squads are worth playing with, but be aware they could attract a spot too much fire for the Officer's good.

When soldiers think, it's called routing.

i vote for list two, but id make a few changes, both lists youve gone max on one heavy weapon, the lascannons in list one will be able to knock out all the tanks but they wont be usefull after that, missile launchers in list two are a bit more versatile but ideally you want to balance the two out anti infantry and anti tank

Moore, Ok.

i personally like more of list 1, than i do list 2.
i don't like the mixing of spec/hvy weapons in the command sqds.

"I have plasma to help with AP2 support, but nothing with good range."
the problem you have is getting it into range. they don't drop, and don't have
a transport.

take list 1. if you drop LI, you free up 70 points. drop the 2 lascannons in the command
sqds. you've freed up 50 more points. now, add 1 plasmagun to each com. sqd.
add DT. you now have 2 com. sqd.s that can drop and burn. with the other points
you have left, you could add 2 dropping sentinels, 2 remnant sqds , another line sqd, etc...

anyway, just a few thoughts. and as always, imho.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

1000 points is too little to be taking Light Infantry and Cameleoline at the same time. You need more men on the table. For that reason List 1 is better than List 2, but list 2 ain't perfect either.

HQ:
Command Platoon-
Command Squad: 4x lasguns, ID, LI. Junior Officer (LP/CCW) - 55

You need a Standard Bearer. No two ways about it.

Elites:
Stormtroopers: 2x hellguns, 2x plasma guns, sgt /w hellpistol. Infiltrate - 75

For that same 75 points you can have 5 H-Vets with 3 Plasma Guns Infiltrating or Deep Striking.

Troops-
Infantry Platoon- (300)
     Command Squad: 2x lasguns, 1x plasma gun, 1x lascannon. Junior Officer /w LP/CCW. ID, LI. - 90

Not good. This unit is target number 1 in anyone's books. A Lascannon and a Plasma Gun, plus a Leadership Radius worth 90 points, and only 5 wounds to it. Command Sections hide. That is all they do. Ditch the Plasma and Lascannon.

Infantry Squad: 7x Lasguns, 1x Plasma Gun, 1x Lascannon, Sgt./w lasgun. LI. - 105
Infantry Squad: 7x Lasguns, 1x Plasma Gun, 1x Lascannon, Sgt./w lasgun. LI. - 105

I'm not sold on the Light Infantry, but otherwise these squads are fine.

Infantry Platoon- (300)
     Command Squad: 2x lasguns, 1x plasma gun, 1x lascannon. Junior Officer /w LP/CCW. ID, LI. - 90
Infantry Squad: 7x Lasguns, 1x Plasma Gun, 1x Lascannon, Sgt./w lasgun. LI. - 105
Infantry Squad: 7x Lasguns, 1x Plasma Gun, 1x Lascannon, Sgt./w lasgun. LI. - 105

Everything I said above applies here.

Heavy Support-
Basilisk: Indirect Training - 125
Leman Russ Battle Tank: hull heavy bolter - 145

With a single visable vehicle at 1000 points you're essentially giving the enemy something to shoot at. Either take 2, or don't take any. The Basilisk I don't like. Apart from the fact that the new blast marker rules make the Basilisk a shadow of its former self, it doesn't really fit - a piece of Artillery moving along with a stealthy infiltrating force??

Were I to rebuild this, I'd take the following:

Doctrines
     Allow Storm Troopers
     Regimental Organisation: Drop Troops
Skills and Drills: Close Order Drill
     Skills and Drills: Iron Discipline
(No Light Infantry as it was taking up too many points - more men is more important)
