A bunch of us have got heavily into 30k ever since Calth came out. We were all hobbyists before, mostly 40k/WFB, but branching out into Flames of War and Bolt Action. Calth has absolutely taken over our entire hobby lives. 30k or death! So we'll be posting about that mainly!

My old 40k marines were all upscaled a bit (using a modified version of Veteran Sergeant's technique that I saw on HeresyOnline way back), so I definitely wanted to carry that on to 30k. I refined my version a bit, made them a bit chunkier, and convinced some (not all) of the lads to go in the same direction....

in no particular order we have...

My Iron Warriors

I'm not the best painter of the bunch, but given the volume I've put out (I've got around 3.5k painted since Calth) I'm very happy with them.
I've gone for a fluffy, infantry heavy army, though having just read The Ironfire ROW, I'm going to be adding some artillery soon.

T's Imperial Fists

This photo doesn't really do them justice. Ty is a slow, but excellent painter. These guys are currently WIP, and the bases have come on a bit since this was taken. We decided to unify the basing scheme, to tie all the forces together. He's currently working on 10 terminators.

X's Word Bearers

Xander has an eye for detail. These guys are stunning. He's going for a fluffy, deep-into-heresy look for his lads. His Ashen Circle are something to behold!

L's Alpha Legion

Luke hasn't scaled his guys up, and I think it really works with his AL, the sneaky bastards that they are. His blended armour is really lovely. I'll try to get him to upload some close ups.

R's Salamanders

Rob used to be a terrible painter. I don't know what happened. Maybe he drank some radioactive paint? He's the master of the airbrush, and the painter that I'm in business with. He's also our resident power gamer, and his zooming Storm Eagle precipitated the purchase of many fliers and Deredeos...

Q's Night Lords

For what he lacks in volume, he makes up for in quality. Fighting in the kitchen of our war-torn utopian Palace/Cathedral, his Night Lords are, to a man, stunningly painted. His next project is a trio of contemptors and a spartan, all suitably covered in skulls and chains.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So here's a small update, Q did some work on Night Lording his Calth contemptor tonight...

God knows why he works in milliput...

T finished his templars recently! I built them (in return for him applying transfers to my lads) and he's done a glorious job

Excellent work here guys, really loving the work that's coming out.

Also like the fact that you're all working in concert to get your armies up, I wish I could convince my mates to get into the hobby !

I myself am playing with the idea of trying my hand at 30k, but picking a legion is extremely hard for me. So far the top contenders are Night Lords , Alpha Legion and Iron Warriors.

Keep it up

Obviously I'm biased, but Iron Warriors are the obvious choice!

In an effort to sway you... here are some pics of a recent game. 2000 points, Iron Warriors vs Salamanders with Alpha Legion... allies?

So I did a little work on my White Scars today (my Loyalist choice)

Pretty much finished up the bikers. All upscaled of course!

3 of them have magnetised arms, so can take a variety of power weapons and pistols.

also ploughed into the GS on my Destroyers!

Wow, what an amazing project. To have so many gamers working together to build up an array of superb armies like this is something very cool indeed! Your battles must look absolutely stunning!

Is that some LotR I see hiding at the back of your desk? Any plans to work on that any time soon?

Nice conversion work on the Contemptor!

I see the ziplock bags laying around and they don't exactly seem like official forgeworld, are you using rescasts?
I've always heard that recasts were shoddy, but your models seem alright!

If we do say so ourselves, our battles do look pretty incredible! So far its all been fully painted in our narrative campaign. I'm planning on building a board with the same basing scheme as our marines, so that game should look especially excellent!

That is some cheeky LOTR at the back. Recently, T and I picked it up again. I've recently knocked out some Rohan, Mordor orcs and some Dwarfs. He also did up some nice Goblins and trolls, and we're planning on finishing up the Goblins together soon...

I'll tell Q... though he doesn't need his ego massaging at all... he and I have both done conversions of the BAC Contemptor, which suffers mostly from a terrible leg pose. But its certainly salvageable.

We have used recasts on some occasions. Most of its kosher Forgeworld stuff. The only recasts I've used so far are those destroyers. And they came out fine. Nothing spectacular. I want to support the company that makes the models I love, but the prices are hard to justify sometimes, even for fanboys like us!

Figured I'd upload some stuff as I'm replying. I took some nice shots of some WIP marines last night, and thought I'd do some comparison shots. So here you are!

Can you give a quick rundown on how you upscale your marines? Is it just a 1mm plastic card spacer in the legs with greenstuff to smooth over, or is there further work you do?

Sure. I definitely plan on doing a detailed tutorial at some point. But a quick run down:

Cut at the thigh with a knife.

Flue a square of 2mm plasticard to the groin section.

trim down so the plasticard is flush with the plastic.

Glue legs back on to the plasticard (the pose/foot position can be a bit odd if you just try and recreate the original pose, so you have to use some judgement here.

Glue legs on to the base (fill under feet if necessary)

File a small flat area on top of the groin (where the torso will go)

Glue a small square of 2mm plasticard on there.

Trim down the square almost to a point.

Wrap a small sausage of Greenstuff around that plasticard.

Wet the underside of the torso and press down firmly before removing (what you want here is a nice, smooth area for the torso to be glued on eventually)

Let the GS cure and cut away the excess.

Glue the torso down.

Using another GS sausage, make a smooth belt around the waist, so the join is seemless and looks like armour (this is the trickiest part, especially on MK3. It's also the most forgiving of mistakes, because of all the packs and pouches you put on.

Now its just regular marine stuff. I usually go:

Triple pouch on the back waist.
Backpack on.
Arms on.
Pistol holster on the right.
Pouches (sometimes need to be trimmed) on the left
Grenades in gaps.

And that's that!

Very nice! I wish I had the kind of flagrant disregard for my finances and lifestyle that would allow me to delve into the Heresy (though I do have an untouched Betrayal at Calth box at my house, I guess) resin models.

I wish I could take credit for the method. I merely adapted something I saw online. But I'm glad that my project has become visible enough to inspire others to do great things with the concept.

That must be quite a sight on the tabletop, all those scaled up Marines.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

We're all just stupid enough to spend our disposable income on resin crack...

Some pics for today, X's Word Bearers. He's done some lovely work with Frostgrave Cultists, and created some amazing bases with them.

You are too kind! We plan on updating this pretty often. At least one of us (normally me) is working on something every day!

So today, after a weekend of LAN and no hobby, I present some pictures T sent me of the Fists I built for him recently. He commissioned 10 Tacticals, 20 Breachers, a Spartan and 3 Dreadnaughts. I have one dread left to finish (he wants sword and shield... it's going to take some time.

The breacher sergeant has a magnetised right arm and a lovely suite of options, and the dreads are also magnetised.

I believe some of these are still slightly Work In Progress, but they're looking great and I was excited to share!

I've been building some Solar Auxilla!

I really wanted a human allies detachment to further emthasize the size of my true scaled marines. And for me at had to be the Solar Aux. Such incredible models, very WW1 which is an aesthetic I really like.

Check some sweet pix! :-)

(Note: I true scaled my own stuff, since The Builder had a bit of a backlog at the time. Hense the spacers on the terminator are pretty obvious up close. All the more reason to have The Builder do it for you!!! :-D)

Just a little hobby today. Sadly I'm back at work after 2 weeks off...

Started a big bunch of legs today. 20 for a multi-legion commission that RT will be painting for a client, and 10 (on the tiled bases) for my white scars.

This is the first stage of the process... some greenstuff will be going on tonight!

I thought I would share a few snaps of my total progress so far! 1850 points of Horus Heresy era Salamanders . Some of it (the Storm Eagle and one of the Rhino's is still a work in progress.)

I've really enjoyed painting my these guys, it's been my first really dip into 40k (I mainly used to paint Warhammer Fantasy till that went the way of the dodo)

I also wanted to take a the opportunity to showcase some of my work! (if you are interested in getting Marines painted for you, drop me a pm

On the way I have some Solar Auxillia and an Imperial Knight! Stay tuned

I don't particulary like "true scale" marines, but your are well made, it seems natural.
And I really enjoy your colours ! How did you get this yellow for your Imperial Fists ?

That's exactly what I was going for! So thank you. I do think alot of true scale projects make marines too big, and it doesn't work for me on that level. Also, it's a much more time consuming and skilled process than I can manage!

I made these so they can happily sit next to a normal marine and not look outrageous.

 godardc wrote:

Ty sent me this (and his thanks)

For the yellow: Undercoat: GW black Airbrush: averland sunset base, followed by flash gitz yellow. There's no highlighting or OSL or positional airbrushing - it's just a base. Drybrush hexos palesun over whole model. (optional for hq/characters: edge highlight dorn yellow) wash: thinned down army painter strong tone over whole model wash: apply strong tone to the clearest recesses as the thinned wash doesn't quite get the contrast you're looking for.

You can leave the yellow here (and initially I did!) but I now apply the yellow GW glaze which gives a beautifully warm finish and richness.

Finally...

I have a small update on the legs. I bashed out the greenstuff on 10 of them over the last two days. This is what a client gets for a Level 1 commission (out of 3 levels). it's pretty cheap (depending on volume) and gives a nice simple start to an upscaled marine.

Little by little... the Heresy Builds.

X has done some work on Xardu Laydak and the Blade Slaves, and Q has made some progress on his Night Lords.

He actually finished the destroyers but took gakky photos, so I'll try to get some better ones for a later update.
