Apologies if this should be in the geek media forum, but seeing as it's a war film, and not a comic book film, I thought I'd post it here. Feel free to move it if it's in the wrong place.

Looks good from what we get, and it's always good to see an early war film.

Surprisingly, Tom Cruise, as General Patton, riding to the rescue on the USS Lexington, is not here, nor is FDR shooting down Stukas from his nuclear fission powered wheelchair And where is that big American flag of freedom to cover the English channel and let the BEF escape back home?

I'm not having a go at American dakka members, but after U-571, it's hard to trust Holywood with Britain's role in WW2.

That was my great fear

I'm tempted to start a FOW BEF list in time for the movie's release...

There is one big potential problem with this film: a leading British pop star has been given an acting part in this film, so if his teenage fans turn up and clog the cinema, I'm not going to be happy! Dammit, this is a war film!!!!

On moon miranda.

Might be cool, but I've never understood the fascination with Dunkirk in the post war era. I get its wartime morale boost value, but in hindsight a hasty evacuation made necessary by battlefield defeat and successful largely because your opponent halts their ground advance for their own reasons doesnt seem like something you'd want to revisit all that much. I'd think somethung like Tobruk would be a more interesting story.

We'll see how it turns out I guess.

It's the British psyche.

We love underdog stories like the Battle of Britain, or glorious defeats like Dunkirk.

In Britain, 1940, the nation standing alone, is pretty much mythologized...Nobody dares question the orthodoxy...Politicians always use it from time to time to boost themselves if we're in a crisis, Churchill spirit and all that...

It's our version of the Alamo, or Paul Revere's midnight journey, or militiamen at Lexington and Concord...

My great uncle was at Dunkirk, with the Royal artillery, and he was one of the last to evacuate. My grandmother (his sister) told me that he had always been an exceptional swimmer, which probably saved his life that day, as he had to swim out a considerable distance to get rescued. He spoke of coming up for air after a bomb had fallen, and all the water around him being on fire.

Truly legendary stuff.

Films have been made about Tobruk too.

I don't see a problem with a film about Dunkirk. It wasn't only blind luck that made it all come off OK. It was thanks to a stern last-ditch defence by British and French forces, remarkable local co-operation between two allies who by then were deeply dissatisfied with each other at the highest levels, a typically excellent effort by the Royal Navy, a lot of small boat owners with balls of steel, and the fortitude of the troops who waited under Luftwaffe bombing to be evacuated.

http://www.adls.org.uk/t1/boats

It was one of the turning points of the war. If the whole BEF had been captured, there would have been much less will to continue fighting. The Battle of Britain would probably not have happened, which was Germany's first defeat and preserved the UK and the Empire to carry on with the war.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Isn't that just an average Mad Max film??

Anyhow... while I'm not really getting much from this teaser, I am interested, especially because Nolan tends to get dark and gritty films if not right, at least passable.

Normally I'd agree, and it was originally posted in the OT forum, and moved here, but usually, historic films branch out into a historical discussion of the event.

I'm hoping to see some classic early war panzers and hopefully a French Char B tank deal out some destruction to the Germans

Nolan is reportedly a fan of Zulu, so if we get some Zulu style defending from the British and French, then it's all good.

The cast doesn't seem to include any notable French actors, and as you say, the French contribution should not be ignored, so hopefully, we'll see the French in there, but seeing as this is a film by a British director with a British cast, we shouldn't be surprised if the focus is on the er...British

It's a shame that filming seems to be have been kept under wraps. I looked around for a call for extras for this, and would have happily made the journey across to France. I would have also been able to bring along my own steel helmet from the war.

Its ok. Alphy. This is Dunkirk. I can root for the good guys (Germans) who win in the end! Germans winning, French surrendering, Brits shouting with Liverpool accents. And maybe even a spitfire!

Frazz, when saving Private Ryan first came out, a lot of people in the UK were unhappy at the comments in the film that were critical of Monty (The Ted Danson scene)

Not me. I had no problem with an American film about American troops with an American point of view. And it's a historical fact that Monty did not get on well with his American counter-parts, especially Patton and Omar Bradley.

Pearl Harbour was a mess at times, but it had good action scenes, and the historical direction was an American mess, but it's still a film I like.

But U-571

I've been waiting for an offical apology from the White House for that god awful mess!

I wasn't expecting 100% historical accuray, but neither was I expecting that!!!!

It set back Anglo-American relations by about 260 years

And don't get me started on the Patriot!

That church burning scene was the Nazis in occupied France 1994, not the Redcoats in colonial South Carolina.

Anybody with even a tiny bit of knowledge about the American revolution knows that British policy was to get the southern loyalists on board, not drive them away, and you don't get people on your side by burning down their property and killing them!

That was a disgusting slur against Britain

Rant over!
