Hi! I'm a long time Dakka lurker (I remember getting excited about the first pics of the new Grey Knight minis ... the metal ones? This was like, when?) and just recently thought about getting back into the hobby and painting up some of the various minis I've hoarded over the years ... and keeping log of my 'progress' here on Dakka!

As I guess many in my generation I started with Space Crusade & Hero Quest somewhere in the 90ies as a kid, and then got into 40k/WFB even though I never really played the games - none of my friends were into this even though we played pen&paper RPGs rather regularly. Years passed & now I'm working at an arts uni - and thought that the HHHobby might be a nice distraction from teaching and staring at my PC screen trying to finish my PhD, even more so with GW's recent nostalgia trip! So, I bought the DW:OK box and painted the termie, and then started rummaging through the boxes of stuff I had bought somewhere along the way as a kid or later as student. Sooo ... these first three minis I painted during the last weekends are a bit of a trip back:

Painting the Space Crusade grot and the termie really showed how much has happened in mini design over the last decades - painting the grot was rather a chore; it's a fun mini but the sculpt is pretty horrid (the fingers of the hand holding the gun don't even align with the arm ...). I might try out some different colour schemes on some of his brothers, though. The DW:OK termie, on the other hand, was quite intimidating with all the details ... also I'm not really happy with the somehow dull armour, maybe I'll touch it up with some better black paint than the cheap acrylics I had at hand.

This sorry heap of half-painted pewter is the next mini on my list:

Guess I'll go for yellow for all of the armour parts, rather then the scheme I tried when I bought this guy.

Nice to see more oldhammer stuff in the P&M blogs

Like you, I started with Hero Quest and Space Crusade (and have recently repainted the Hero Quest heroes). I'm trying to renew all my metal models at the moment. I'm currently working on some 2nd ed devastators.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Well, this boy was much more fun to paint then I thought! Took ages though. Lots of nice details, I just added some green stuff to the arm joints to make him look a bit bulkier. Here we go:

Guess I'll do something with his Boss Pole if I find any suitable bits - this is still from the time were people were meant to make paper banners. I remember printing out some self-made designs and colouring them in, surely a good thing those were lost somewhere on the way ...

So ... that's an old Space Marine Sarge from the 3rd ed box. I thought of painting the marines as Dark Angels then but obviously didn't get very far, and now repainted this guy with a colour scheme for a yet unnamed homebrew SM chapter. The idea is that these marines start with whitish armour and paint parts of it after participating in a campaign or mission - so, in theory, a veteran would eventually have a completely crimson set of armour. But then, some marines re-paint their entire armour white for one reason or the other - a failed mission, losing an important battle bro etc. Might look good as an army ... (?)

(yeah, have too come up with something for the banner pole yet)

Ok, these guys might be next:

Huh? What are those, even, you might ask, why did this silly man glue guns to his Orruk™ Swyneryders?! Well you'd have to ask early 90ies GW why they thought Boarboys in Space were a good idea, but I found them hilarious as a kid, so I bought a box and, uh, applied some paint to some spots before forgetting about them for the next decade.

I guess they could work as 'count as' Stormboyz in modern 40K, I'd just have to replace the plasma gun. Or maybe count-as warbikes, but I'm not sure how this would work as a conversion. I could get a box of Lootas/Burna Boyz and try to somehow use the heavy weapons, but then I'd have to remove the CCW/pistol arms of the Boarboys to make them fit ... any suggestions?!

Nice vintage stuff.

For the boar boys, I think bikes is the best counts-as. Roughly the same footprint on the table. No idea about gear options though.

Ok so I'll go for the 'Boarbike' count-as version ... having to somehow deal with the lack of boar-mounted Dakkagunz I came up with this

Fits well with an idea I had for the painting scheme. I'll put a little greenstuff on top of his fist for the gun grip, maybe even sculpt some leather strips that'd 'bandage' the autocannon to his arm?! Also, all of the boyz will move to the larger oval bases.

Haha I'm the slowest HHHobbyist ever. Finished the Nob lately, pigs & conversions for the other Boyz are done, in general. Also there's this new thing that I had to buy slowly taking shape in the background:

Hmm maybe I overdid it a bit with the 'dynamic' pose. Let's imagine him trying to flank some kind of large critter or dread, or maybe engaging in a bizarro duel with a jetbike.

Alright, thanks to the Dakka monthly challenge I actually managed to get back to painting regularly, so let's resurrect this sorry thing ^^

Finished a wacky take on Yvraine via One Piece in December:

Now, first steps into Warcry territory - I think Warcry is my favorite current GW range, but it took a while to even cut these folks from their sprues. I'm not a fan of the original Iron Golem scheme, so I'll try to make them properly grimdark, try out some new techniques, too ...

... aaand then I got distracted by some other Chaos dudes

Painting him in a scheme I used for a Lord of Possession last year. I'd like them to look somewhere between 'modern' CSM and Rogue Trader ones - kinda fancy but without every armour panel being painted in a different garish primary or pastel colour
No idea yet what they'd be fluff-wise, I guess something tzeentchy or slaaneshy?

Hey mate,

Obviously going for quality over quantity in updates here!

Yvraine's dress is really beautiful - colour choice, transitions and flowers all. Great job on her!

Chaos dudes look promising - the different coloured flames on the MoP are a great idea.

4 years on - any progress on the orks?

4 years on - any progress on the orks?

umm I'll definitely get back to these, like, soon I have so many half-painted or unassembled orks (starting with the late 80ies RTB 13 Space Orks plastic kit!!), IDK, guess I need some kind of overall project or inspiration for these ...

Those are some nice looking Chaos dudes. What Legion are they representing?

Good question! Originally I just wanted to go for an updated version of the dark blue / red scheme of ye olde Space Crusade Chaos Marines/Dreadnought minis but now they look like either too bright Night Lords or too dark Emperor's Children. Maybe some warband or renegade chapter? First idea off the top of my head that would fit the kinda flashy coulours - warband of pirates moving from planet to planet & corrupting the survivors to join them in their quest for riches & glory?

Some progress on the Warcry minis for this month's Dakka challenge:

Needs more highlights, then I'll move on to the others from his gang while I wait for my paint order (inks + technicals, including moar BLOOD) to arrive

The glowing face plate is really something, I think that's the favourite thing I've seen for this specific warband.

Thanks a lot! I really like those minis' "Bioshock Big Daddy meets 80ies fantasy movie extras" feel & wanted to make them look a bit industrial and eerie.

Started adding gunk to the bases (and weapons):

The burned looking things are sprue pieces covered with one of the Citadel Argellan technical paints.

So the "Showing Off" Dakka challenge was a great excuse to finally get a bunch of Luminälfs. They are so pretty! And so ridiculous. I want to use a lot of colour gradients on these so I also got a set of Kimera Kolors. These are acrylics which only use one pigment per colour with a quite restricted palette - a couple of yellows, reds, blues, but only one (1) green, so you have to do a lot of mixing yourself.

Started off with the Stonemage yesterday - I have NO IDEA what I'm doing but its lot of fun! More like, painting ON a mini, rather than painting a mini? Hmmm.

Your Iron Golems turned out great, the basing works well and their bronze armour is well done.

Keen to see what you bring to your Lumineth, I've been looking for ideas for my own! Nice to see another trying out Kimera Kolors, they're weird at the start. I was used to mixing paint anyway but never from single pigment paints.

Thanks Tyranid Horde! Still lots of things to figure out with the Kimera Kolors, mixing is fun but I really need to get used to the specific differences in regards to opacity.
Been messing around with the colour scheme for the Lumineth. Think I figured out where to go with the capes, the rest, not so much ^^

Stonemage WIP ... ugh I'm so slow, still lots to do till the challenge deadline on Sunday :|
(legs/staff aren't glued in place yet, also I'm not even sure what colour the boots/gloves will have - maybe a deeper, reddish brown? Or just a very plain grey & get rid of the brown hues?)

Also I found an old Kislev winged lancer I bought on a whim like, 20 years ago (I guess when the With Fire and Sword movie came out, LOL) and never finished painting, will try to work a bit on him whenever I'm too stressed out by this complicated aelf

Finished this one, at least. Quite happy overall, but lots of trial and error here ... repainted the top piece of the staff 3 times in different schemes and am still not really convinced by the way it's looking now. Kimera Paints are interesting to use (and work very well together with Vallejo washes!), let's see how I can incorporate them in my usual painting styles for other stuff than wacky fantasy elves. Anyway, the Lumineth aren't the easiest to paint, but quite fun once it all comes together - might be a interesting project for an Army on Parades display, centered around the ones from Underworlds box & adding the respective units, the new floating terrain thingy and maybe one centerpiece model. Looks like a busy year for me at work though, have two books to finish and already a couple of conferences lined up, which is good for me but obviously less good for hhhobbying :p
