Hi everyone! If you are attending the Battle for Salvation GT or are in the area this event will be hot this year! I am personally overseeing construction of new beautiful terrain tables, and we welcome all types from the tournament goer to casual gamer to beginner! If you are new to 40k, or would rather play in our xwing tournament this year, or you want to play your pet project 'allied contingent', this event is for you!

The event is 400 points with some special rules for playing 40k at such low points values, all are detailed on the battle for salvation website here:

http://www.battleforsalvation.com/40k-tournament-rules/

missions have been updated from last year to be super simple and eliminate bookkeeping.... feel free to ask any questions here.

Thanks for posting this Meade. I expect nothing but the best Combat patrol Friday night gaming as we have in the past..

I highly recommend anyone coming in a little early (Firday) to take advantage of the Combat Patrol Tournament as well as open gaming on our awesome tables throughout the late afternoon.

Thanks for posting this! I wasn't going to go this year as none of my "competitive" armies are painted up, or close enough to it, but this is perfect.

I'll be there!

Is it fair to ask... for this format, in your experience, do people take fun, fluffy lists, or should we be list-building expecting people to stretch the list-building restrictions to their limits? You can squeeze a lot of Eldar Jetbikes and Warp Spiders into 400pts... *ick*

Well, I can't ban Eldar, as a faction, but D weapons are banned for this event. There are some restrictions, for instance jetbikes that are also troops are limited to one unit, and the unit cannot be more than 150 pts.

Last year we had a good mix of everything really, so there will definitely be some casual fluffy lists. I'll be playing in the event myself (as a ringer, not eligible for prizes) and be sure to bring something casual. But the tournament champion prize and the renaissance man prize are equal, so the main thing i would say to people is that if you bring a very well painted army and you are at least a decent player with an army that is not super low-tier, you have a good chance of winning that prize vs. a player that has a competitive but not so well painted/themed army. It is a combo painting/theme rank so things like cool conversions and diversity of units also count towards that ren man prize.

I saw it mentioned in the main BFS thread, but the GW FAQs (the draft ones) are in-use for this, correct?

The "official" faqs did not make a 30 day cut off, therefore the GW faq's are not in place for the GT. I cannot speak for the Combat Patrol

0000 - Rest Period - BUT YOU BETTER NOT SPEND FOUR WHOLE HOURS SLEEPING. IF YOU DO YOU ARE NOT ANGRY ENOUGH AND TOMORROW YOU GET THE FIRST CHANCE TO PLAY PIN THE TAU ON THE CARNIFEX.

no GW Draft Faqs

Considering it sounds like a much friendlier, and more laid back side-event/format, i'm going to imagine players will be left to figure out in a gentlemanly way, the nuances. I'm sure someone fighting to have Drop-Pod fins counting for area denial are not playing in the spirit of the event. :-p

Edit: For the record, the wife and I will be playing in the event, and will be mostly running hot garbage that never gets to see the table otherwise. :-p

The Faq used for combat patrol will be ITC, same as for the GT, and no GW faqs, if there are any questions as far as rules are concerned we will just follow the policies of the GT, that makes it easier for everyone. The only difference is the Combat Patrol has some special rules to (attempt to) re-balance it for playing at 400 pts.

@ Neo Truth: I'm happy to hear it! Yes the spirit of this event is casual. I don't want to discourage the competitive crowd, or anyone that plays to win, but rather encourage them to try playing with an army or list they wouldn't normally play with... I honestly expect a range of people, certainly hobbyists like myself and we have a few younger players who are interested as well. I also hope the Ren man prize encourages casual players that if you come with a well themed, painted, or converted army you have a good chance at that prize.

We've been testing out the missions at the club, and the other night I managed to pull out a win with my chaos against my friend playing an Eldar list using max jetbikes according to the rules for the event. It was close of course... and he had terrible luck at penetrating my forgefiends' armor, but at least the game was fun, quick and free of any bookkeeping! But interesting enough because while playing you have to think twice about whether you are going for a win by objectives, or by kill points. It's not always an easy decision since camping on your own side of the board will get you no closer to a win.

A couple of us tested the scenarios as well, using a wide range of armies, and the mix of objective and VP from killing units (based on their value), proved to keep things really close even with very atypical lists.

Hordes of cheap bodies did well in one regard, and some VP denial, whereas other armies shined doing objective grabbing tricks.

All-in-all, we're pretty impressed with how hard it was to cheese an assured victory.

All I know is that the Inquisition is rolling, and rolling deep on this one. Fun times, begin!

Oh, I meant to ask. But when I read the army comp rules it has a mandatory and an optional setup. Are the two combined for a max or 3 troops / 2 elites? Or is the overall max 2 troops and 1 elite slot?

Edit:

Nevermind, just realized that you can still use a regular cad or formation and that the smaller one is simply an alternative option! Let the good times roll!

Yes, as long as it's a single CAD or formation, and not a detachment/formation that is composite like the Decurion.

Then there is the alternative formation for this event that does not require you to take an HQ, basically.. but limits the other non-troop options. All the other rules still apply, such as the limits on troops that are also 2+ armor save or non-infantry.

Less than a week out! any last minute list submissions, i will still give bonus battle points if received by midnight tonight.

There was a small typo in the tournament packet, concerning the penalty for units with greater than 3 wounds, it should now read:

Any unit with greater than 2 wounds instead has 2 wounds, with the following exceptions:

Any Troop unit, this rule does not apply.
Any unit for which it's best invulnerable or armor save is no better than 4+, 5+, 6+ or none, and has less than toughness 6, this rule does not apply.
Any unit with the swarm USR, this rule does not apply.

Wow... That's actually a pretty substantial change. I spent a fair amount of my 400pts on the ability to deal with MCs that would've slipped through the old rule (pre-typo correction), and now don't really need to. If only I had time to paint up something different. :-p

Should still be a really fun time. I'm really looking forward to getting blown off the table Friday. :-)

there may still be some MC's, you never know. Anyhow sorry about that, one of those weird things i wasn't paying attention to where in my head it made perfect sense but wrote it out the opposite way. It can be tricky writing rules as i'm sure you're aware! If you see anything else that seems funny, let me know... i spent a lot of time trying to write out the missions the proper way.

No worries man. When I started working in this industry I definitely had a harsh reality check as to how different it is being an enthusiast and thinking you can design something, versus actually getting it to paper exactly as you envisioned.

I should've guessed the original release had a typo. The fact that Riptides and Mawlocs could slip into a format that they would just absolutely have dominated should've tipped me off. :-p

Meanwhile, i'm looking forward to it. I think the scenarios look great, but I do suspect n future years you might alter the final scenario to be holding table thirds, versus quarters. I imagine at this size of game, you will be seeing a LOT of armies with two units, and if there are a number of draws I would wager a guess they'll happen in that scenario.

There still can be riptides and mawlocs but they will have two wounds

That's a good point. Perhaps in the future we'll try table thirds or a circle in the middle to make fifths. But i doubt there will be actual draws, there will always be a way to determine the winner unless the armies are virtually identical and did nothing to each other or tabled each other simultaneously. In which case we have bigger problems!

You can just show up. Just be sure to read the packet, and I also made a small correction in this thread, to be sure your list is legal, and of course you can ask me questions and send me your list to be sure.

There are a few rules or restrictions you might miss if you only read the packet once, so that's why i wanted to encourage everyone to submit lists early to cut down on issues when everyone shows up.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also another public service announcement, the start time on the packet is 5:00, but the hard limit for when we start playing is 6:00, and we will probably go late until around 10:00. the rounds will be 75 minutes, three rounds, 5 minute breaks. So it's crucial we start on time or a little early.
