Hey guys I really need some help with putting together a space marine list. I want the model count to be quite low and everything to be quite suped up. Basically what I want is it to feel like a small but elite force where every model is very tough and every loss matters greatly. I'm very open in terms of chapters and would Ideally like some detachmsnts and formations to support this. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks very much in advance I've only been playing again for the past few months.

Try greyknights or maybe deathwatch. Alternatively the blood angels have a detatchment and two formations where the only things you can take are vanguard and sternguard vets, standard and assault termies and dreadnoughts with termi armoured hqs

Welcome to Dakka.

GK and DW are the hyper-elite of the marines. So that’s probably your best starting point.

The basic marine codex also has a number of formations that are composed of nothing but veterans. If you want to build a slightly more normal/flexible list, you can stick with the basic CAD and use some minimal scout units to fill your troops. They can infiltrate the table, and call down the hammer in the form of DSing terminators and sternguard in pods. Can make for a fun list.

Librarian conclave, potential for a 500pt formation with 5 models and all sort of cool tricks!

Grey Knights - 3500pts
SKitarii - 4000pts
Ad mech - 2000pts
Imperial Knights - 1000pts
Black Templars - 3200pts
Genestealer cults - 1750

True.

I know it’s also often considered a dirty word, but there is always Unbound.

One of these days I want to put together a Seven Samurai list, composed of nothing but SM captains. I don’t think it would do well, but just having 7 marines running around the table would be a blast.

That and it would help justify the fact that I own more captains then should be in a chapter...

I wanted t do that with black templars, just characters and drop pods. It could actually be competitive when you think how many multi wound models with decent invuls you get, once they're in combat they can just tie up every unit.

You're still 'that guy' but it'd make for an interesting friendly game.

Well, I'd consider a GK army with GK Terminators, some power armor Grey Knights, and Dreadknights.
