A while back, while discussing the most useless units in 40k on Dakka, I mentioned that it was too bad Hellions suck so hard, since their models are so great, and I have so many sitting around.
And someone said: "Why don't you use them as Corsairs with jetpacks?"
Mind. Blown.
So I ran a test game to see how a prospective Corsairs list would play out.
Reaver Band (Jump packs, Flamer x2)

Reaver Band (Fusion gun x2, Venom with Scatter Laser, Splinter Cannon)

Cloud Dancer band (Scatter Laser x3)
Cloud Dancer band (Scatter Laser x3)
Malevolents (x10, Power Lance x4)
Promethium Relay Pipes
It went GREAT! The Relay Pipe plan went off flipping perfectly. The Flamer squads would hop out, hose down an enemy with their Torrent flamers, (making sure they were just barely inside 12" so they could get the Reckless Abandon move) and then hightail it back to cover and away from retaliation.
My opponent was Blood Angels, and with every unit on the table able to move 2-3 times per turn, I was able to keep all of his units running in circles the entire game.
The Corsair Venoms kicked major butt, as did the Reavers.
The Malevolents were a let down. They didn't have much in the way of combat oomph, although they did do a good job of drawing the enemy's fire. I may try them one more time, but if they're disappointing a second time around I'm going to try to find a unit to replace them.
I don't think I'll be able to win major events with this, but I can definitely see it working in a casual-competitive setting.
I ran corsair for a bit - I'd consider swapping malvolents for balestrikes with dark lances. Gets you some long range anti-tank. Throw on jetpacks and now they're relentless, Jump-shoot-Jump to your hearts desire!
How did your prince fare? Did he see combat? Also, how was your void dreamer? Any bad perils? Lol
I might do that, although that would require retooling the list a bit, since the HQs were kitted for CC.
The Prince and the Void Dreamer did okay. The Prince kept up my running trend of failing Shadowfield saves on the very first attempt, but then made all her LOS rolls, so at least there was that. The Void Dreamer took one bad Perils (the 2-3 result) but there wasn't any other valid target for the power, so it just fizzled. They only made it into CC with a single unit, which was an assault squad that had already taken quite a bit of a beating from shooting attacks. Even with the numbers reduced to 5, it still took them two turns of combat to wipe it.
