Hello all!

EDIT: We renamed the blog: http://berserkirwargamers.blogspot.be/

I'm part of a close group of friends who enjoy painting and gaming with our collection of miniatures. All of us hail from Leuven, a Belgian town best known for it's university and tasty beer.

Lately, we discovered the tabletop game Darklands and are hooked! I decided to make a blog and hope to regulary post painted miniatures and bloody battle reports. Enjoy!

Awesome, while I love the look of Mierce Miniatures I shudder at the thought of playing a game which requires them (from a cost perspective). Can't wait to see more of what you guys put together.

Leuven

I can confirm the sheer awesomeness of Darklands and it's beautiful models.

As far as the cost is concerned, I don't think it differs that much from games like wh40k or warmachine.

Very cool!

Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless and perfunctory gift nobody ever asked for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So you're stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down because there's nothing left to drink. Sure once in a while there's a peanut butter cup or a English toffee, but they're gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits of hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts. If you're desperate enough to eat those all you've got left is a. An empty box, filled with useless brown paper wrappers.

@Elbows: Mierce miniatures are indeed expensive when you buy them at retail prices. But they host a lot of kickstarters. There are big discounts and good deals on these kickstarters. The latest kickstarter focuses on starter hosts at a decent price. The models are top notch and, in my opinion, by the best on the market.

TILL VALHALL!

The year is 650 AD. The small Norse town of Mannarsfell is the scene of a brutal Ysian raid. It is autumn and heavy rain pours down from the skies. The field of battle is transformed in a thick muddy field.

Jarl Skäldi leads his warband of troll warriors through the woods, intend on defending the village from the foul Ysian raiders.

The trolls are reinforced by two holumann units. Gothi Laugär, a renowed sorcerer, also joins battle. The Norse set up for battle:

The Ysian raiders set up near the south of the village. A unit of brutes will be spearheading the assault. This bunch of frenzied maniacs is lead by a feared Deathbrute The second wave of attack consists of an immens flesh-hulk named Druc. The last wave of attackers are a unit of axe-drunes, lead by War-drune Kai and Battle-drune Vance.

The Ysians gain the initiative and the frenzied brutes race forward. Jarl Skäldi sends his first unit of trolls forward to meet them. A bloody combat ensues and the trolls manage to cut one of the brutes down. But the two surviving brutes hit back and one troll has only a couple of wounds left.

War-drune Kai keeps the pressure on and sends Druc into the thick of battle. The enraged monstrosity charges into the trolls and totally obliterates the entire units with his big meaty fists!

The horrified Holumann unit watches how the trolls are being eaten by Druc.

Druc gains an impressive 18 blood tokens for his achievements!

But the carnage is far from over. Frenzied Druc makes a breakthrough move and slams into the Holumann unit. The Norse humans remain disciplined and advance through the thick mud towards Druc. They start hacking away at the flesh-hulk but only manage to do a couple of wounds. The still frenzied Ysian warbeast immediately retaliates and eats 8 humans. The two surviving Holumann decide that enough is enough and flee.

Rain is still pouring over the battlefield. Troll Gothi Laugär decides to take matters into his own hands and calls upon his sorcerous powers. He sends a series of crackling lightning bolts at the two remaining brutes and totally obliterates them. Another lightning bolt is send at Druc and manages to take away half of his wounds!

Jarl Skäldi is emboldened by this show of force from the Gothi and charges the wounded beast. His bodyguard of elite troll warriors also enters the fray.

The brutal shock attack is too much for the wounded Druc and he is killed by the troll's great cleavers.

The Ysian deathbrute commander joins the melee and challenges the troll Jarl for a duel. A short exchange of blows ensues and Jarl Skäldi cuts the deathbrute in half!

War-Drune Kai tries gain back the initiative and personally leads his axe-drunes into the exulted trolls.

The War-drune swift charges into Skäldi and decapitates the troll with his great weapon. All remaining units in the Norse host take their woe tests and remain firm. Gothi Laugär takes over command and orders the great cleaver trolls to hack away at the remaining Ysians.

War-drune Kai and his personal guard of axe-drunes are chopped into tiny bits. The Ysian invaders are repelled, victory to the Norse!

Aftertoughts: Wow, what a great battle! Darklands has become my favorite wargame and this battle shows why. Brutal combat, epic duels, terrifying beasts, deadly magic, .. this game had it all.

Playing my gaming buddy Krikke is always great fun. His Ysians are painted to a very high standard and I like their savage battle tactics. Frenzied units are very good because they double their blood and they are always on alert. But their downside is that they are very hard to control. So I had to lure them away from the main action. Sadly, because of the thick mud (slow going) it was impossible to lure them away with the holumann units. The puny humans were stuck in the mud and the brutes raced towards my lines.

Krikke played his Ysians very aggresively and the outcome of battle was uncertain untill the end. The game went smoothly and we only had to interrupt the game a handfull of times because of rules issues. The Darklands rulebook looks quite intimidating, but the basic priciples are quite easy to learn. We are now in the process of learning all the master rules, they add a lot of dept to your game.

I must say that I am very impressed by this ruleset and look forward to my next battle!

This game looks like a lot of fun, and this batrep makes it all the more enticing. When can we expect the next epic battle?

The game looks like it plays somewhat like warmachine, is that the feeling while playing as well?

Thanks for the kind replies guys!

@youidiotkid: My gaming group is now playing the game Darklands on a weekly base so I hope to post a new battle report soon!

@Illumini: We are still quite new at learning Darklands but it doesn't feel entirely like Warmachine to me. I've played Warmachine for the last two years now and Darklands is somewhat different.

In Warmachine you have a warcaster who uses spells and a powerful feat. Your force consists of some beast/jacks, an infantry unit (or two) and some solo's. Synergy is key in Warmachine. The game can be brutal because of the usage of feats, combo's and (sometimes) not knowing what your opponent's tricks are.

Darklands uses various commanders within each Host. Each commander then commands some infantry and/or beasts. This game is brutal because of the carnage that each unit can bring to the table. Synergy can be useful but is not key like in Warmachine. You have dozens of different actions that each unit can do (charge, grab, gaze, ...). You are not vulnerable to an alpha strike because some of your units can withdraw or retreat when ordered to. The game is really deep and the rules look quite intimidating on first sight. But when you start to play the game, you start to appreciate that level of detail.

Here you can read a very well written 'intro to Darklands' article: http://hardchaff.tumblr.com/post/127164407201/darklands-on-the-edge-of-town-darklands-intro-by

'DAWN ATTACK!'

The year is 650 AD. A small warband of Norse raiders embarks from their longships after a long journey at sea. Scout parties detect a small Albainn host that prepares to meet the raiders head on.

Troll Gothi Laugär takes command and orders his men and trolls to take up battle formations. It is the dawn of a very hot summer day and the Norse ready themselves for the coming bloodshed.

Drast the Hunched surveys the battlefield. The Norse raiders are deploying around a large building nearby. But the Albainn warlord anticipated this raid and is preparing to set up his trap...

Bagseg, the oghurithne Umaer leads his fellow oghurithnis through the thick woods. They have succesfully outflanked the bulk of the Norse forces.

The Norse holumann unit detects the oghurithne war party and charges into battle. But fear engulfs the otherwise brave men from the north and their charge is unsuccesfully. The oghurithnes retaliate and they start butchering their opponents. Three holumann manage to escape the carnage.

After this show of force the Oghurithnes breakthrough into the second unit of Holumann. The Norse Visi Haäkon Ingvarsson enters the fray and starts hacking at the giant brutes. But thanks to their parry saves, the oghurithnes only take minor damage.

The Norse battle line is barely holding after the Albainn shock attack. The fell troll roars at the enemy but fails to make an impression...

Troll Gothi Laugär desperately tries to swing the tide of battle. He launches a couple of lightning bolts at Ettu, the stone giant. But Ettu, the great stone construct, only takes minor damage. The Gothi orders the Trolls to press forward but they are too far out of position.

A giant melee ensues when the brave Albainn Gairlom charge the fell troll. They manage to hack big chunks of meat out of him. But the lumbering troll is not fast (and skilled) enough to damage the gairlom in return.

Uhmaer Gudhlagg scans the battlefield for a worthy opponent. He spots the unit of trolls (and some tasty beers!) and decides to charge in. After a brutal combat in wich the trolls totally screw up, the Uhmaer emerges victorious.

The Norse have taken a tremendous beating and even the fell troll is brought down by the puny Gairlom spearmen. Troll Gothi Laugär decides that he has made enough mistakes on this hot and sunny morning. He scrambles what is left of his host and decides to head for the beachhead. This battle is lost but he will return. One day...

Victory to the Albainn!

Amazing terrain, really looks professional.

All the miniatures look great as well.

Which miniature is the guy with a bear skin on his head? He would make a great priest of Ursun for my Kislev army

Hello Illumini

Thanks for your feedback!

The bearskin guy is from the boardgame 'Blood Rage'.

You can buy some of the miniatures separately at ebay for a couple of Euro's. They are cast in some kind of PVC but once painted, they look fantastic!

I know it's slightly off topic, but I really like the idea of using a doormat to simulate a crop field!

May have to steal that

Excellent minis and board

Lol D4V1D0 . Doormats are indeed a very good source for crop fields. These add a lot of character to your gameboard for almost no money and work!

Our wargaming club 'The Wargaming Monkeys' hosted a small gaming convention called 'Wargaming for life'. The goal was to raise money for the Kinderkankerfonds, this is a Belgian organisation wich helps children who suffer from cancer. Various Belgian wargaming clubs attended the convention and collected money for this charity. Thomas and I decided to host a large gaming table featering all our painted dark ages/medieval models. We played a modified version of the game Saga:

Great looking stuff as usual, I like that you are able to use stuff from lots of different ranges so well together. The terrain is also great and really brings it together

Now for something a little bit different, a SAGA battle report. Enjoy!

It's a cold morning when Ulric hears the sound of the hooves of galloping steeds. The towering blacksmith reaches for his warhammer and goes outside to have a look.

A band of Hunnic tribesmen, intend on looting , advances at a rapid pace towards the small village.

Suddenly a deafening war cry erupts from the woods around the village. "Deus vult! Montjoie Saint Denis!!" A contignent of valiant French knights and mercenary crossbowmen confronts the Hunns.

Hunnic archers enter the outskirts of the village and lay down a barrage of arrows.

The Hunnic commander sends his swift horsemen into the fray. Their mission is to harass the knights so they won't be able to launch a combined charge.

But the swift horsemen are easily repelled by a volley of crossbowfire.

Bloody combat erupts all around the village.

Another wave of savage Hunns descends upon the French lines. French knights counter charge and cut down the horsemen.

Casualties start to mount on both sides of the battlefield. Who will prevail?

The French cavalry charges at the center of the Hunnic lines. After a short but brutal melee, the Hunnic chieftain is cut down by Guy D'Artois, the French commander. The village is saved and the barbarians are driven off. But at what cost? A lot of French knights have sacrificed their lives to defend the homeland from the invaders. And a lot of French noblewomen are left behind alone...

Hello guys!

We hosted a big Saga/Darklands game at the Hamburg Tactica convention. There was a great atmosphere and we met a lot of very cool people. I really like the Tactica concept of keeping the display tables limited and the show small scaled. There were a lot of high quality tables and we enjoyed chatting to the other gamers.
