Questioning Maelstrom Believer
|
I only recently discovered Maelstrom's Edge, but it didn't take long to sell me on the game. Thanks to the extensively descriptive gameplay examples, sprue breakdowns, and the awesome Let's Play recently done for the game, I sold a friend of mine on splitting a core box (And have since ordered myself a second box)
Assembly on these guys was a breeze! Mold lines are minimal and customization is high, just how I like it!
Anyway, I thought I'd share my progress in the game here as I paint up first my Epirians and then my Karists. I'll also take the time to post some battle reports as I get in games with friends!
To start us off, my Epirian forces assembled and based:
Whole army shot as of yesterday, still VERY MUCH WIP for everyone but the Contractors:
Epirian Contractors finished, might add some tufts but other than that...
And finally some Dig Site objective markers I put together for the missions that use them:
EDIT: Yeesh... for some reason the thumbnails on these look blurry. If you click on them and zoom even a tiny bit they clear up.

Off to a great start!
The contractors look great, and the drones with the yellow accents are really striking.

Whoa, I am really impressed by the contractors! I assume they started out just like the rest? Is it mostly toning down the base colors with a wash and then adding highlighting? Would love a brief description of how you're painting them

Unfortunately, this is a known bug . I described it and my workaround here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/634838.page
It is on legoburner (the site admin's) list to fix, I'm hoping soon as it also drives me crazy . In the meantime, a quick resize before uploading (and saving it as a .png to avoid loss of detail) works great!

Thank you!
The basic process I'm using for pretty much all my purple is the same:
Vallejo Air Alien Purple
Army Painter Purple Tone
Highlight 70/30 VA Alien Purple/VA Warlord Purple (Alien is a bit pale, need a little extra vivid color in there)
1-2 highlights working up to VA Squid Pink for edges
I do it a little different every time, but it gives me a nice rich purple that I like so far. This is my basic process for MOST colors. Base, wash, base color again, highlight up to edges.

After playing a few games with my wife (Who likes the Epirians as they remind her of Weyland-Yutani) I've started to become really attached to my Karist troopers.
After a particularly outstanding performance, I decided my Tempest Elites deserved a proper paint job:
Having received my Expansion Sprues, I realized that I lack the Karist Trooper sprues to make Praetorians, so I'm getting some more of those, but I DID have some extra Contractors and a Scarecrow, so I got to work making a Suppression Team:
And I started on a Scarecrow idea I had for a Bot Handler's personal Scarecrow, figuring the guy probably likes to snipe the old fashioned way:

The paintjob on those karists looks great! I love the crystal glow
Also something about those dig site objectives really floats my boat, terrific work!

After I did the first of them, I realized how much like Tiberium it looked, and that immediately decided it for me: All the cloth parts HAVE to be red.
I mean... a fanatical militaristic cult centralized around a prophet or prophets who worship a universal resource that also happens to be extremely dangerous? Karists may as well be NOD.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k. Rule #1 - BBAP

That's totally awesome and really fits what I had in my head when writing Wynn's first encounter with a winged Angel.
