So, I've been thinking about the las vegas open, it's not very far and sounds like it could be fun.

Trouble is, I play orks, which aren't terribly powerful, and furthermore, I don't really like playing either of the two competitive, netlist, gimmicky ork options (zhardsnark biker spam and buzzgob stompa).

That being said, I understand this is a national tournament, and gimmicky netlists will win the day, more than likely.

Which I suppose begs the question - is it worth going to if you're not going to bring a top-tier list? Are there not-so-competitive tournament or play options?

I suppose there's just classes and events, and the like, but it'd be a shame to go and not play. However, I don't really want to spend 3 days getting trashed by scatbikes and invisible gravstars.

So, what are your thoughts on the LAO for the not-so-competitive minded? For reference, my go-to 1850 tournament list is the dread mob formation, so I'd be the idiot bringing orkanauts and deff dreads to a grand tournament.

As an aside, the dread mob is my favored choice because A) It's a small model count army, which helps for timed events, B) Mork help me, I love ork walkers. and C) Bringing an all walker army can be surprisingly effective against well balanced armies, who may lack the volume of anti-armor shots necessary to stop me. That being said, ones that do have it, or have things like knights, are going to annihilate me.

The Narrative event is a more laid back 'friendly' option if you dont want to play in the 40K championships

We've also got the 40k Friendly, the narrative as Wren pointed out, the 40k apocalypse event, the WAAAGH on Railz narrative ork train battle, and more. Check out the list of events in the casual and open gaming areas: https://lasvegasopen.squarespace.com/home-1

Bottom tier player input:

For the first 2LVOs, I was one table away from the wooden spoon, no joke. However, I still had loads of fun. Srsly, I went 1 and 5.

I finished 2-4 last year with standard eldar. Still a blast.

I have done better at the BAOs, but I still see and know how the lower scoring players are doing. And they're having fun.

With sooo many players, if you end up with a couple losses to start, I think you'll still find upper number tables a great place to play. The atmosphere is really mellow. Given it's in the casino, the beer fueled mellow fibe is awesome.

IMHO, you can't go wrong either way.

Ive been to every LVO. Ive taken Orks 2 of 3 times. 40k champs are my favorite just because I see the same people from all over and I get good games. Only a few with TFG. But they are more funny to me than upsetting. You might consider just taking a novel ork list like gun line, psyker heavy, Bully + Brigade, Daemon or Chaos Allies. Take FUN list. Maybe something that can hammer a popular netlist thats mid to top tier like WolfStar Superfriends, Gladius, Baronial Court. We're just not gonna make the top tables with greenskins. Also you could try for top Ork.

I've played the championship with sisters the last two years. Bring a list you enjoy, hop in the deep end and have fun. 99% of my opponents in Vegas were great.

Try and run a list that you enjoy - and is not easy to defeat.

You'll have great opponents, run into some nasty lists, so bring something that won't get easily tabled but can still throw down. Green tide with Khorne Daemons / BTs or something silly. Dred Mob would probably get stomped out nearly every game.

Also depends on how much you're drinking during the event

Thanks for all the great feedback, everyone! It makes us really happy to hear that everyone is having fun as ultimately, that is the goal of the event.
