I'm not overly bothered, cannot really say I'm a fan of the original story.
Looks pretty enough though.
The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.
"the play's the thing wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king,
Can't say I'm thrilled by them turning the Major into another generic "who am I really" super special bad ass. One of the things that was nice about her character was the sheer unadulterated confidence.
They've already done the Bourne Identity meets Sci-Fi (twice, and the first one was sort of okay). I'd rather see a more faithful adaptation of GitS focused on the mystery and existential philosophy is all (which I suppose this could still be, it is just a trailer).
Wasn't the struggle in the original film not her searching for her identity, but her struggling to maintain that individual sense of self in an increasingly connected world?
which could have been rather poignant given that the developed world is hooked up to their smartphones 24/7...
The only way we can ever solve anything is to look in the mirror and find no enemy
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the animes refer to her as The Major, in reference to her rank? This seems to be calling her just Major like it's her proper name.

In Stand Alone Complex she was often simply called "Major."
I actually don't know if that even is her current rank, or just a reference to her time in the SDF before the series. The only people who ever call her by her real nae that I can remember is Batou who occasionally called her Motoko.

They are lifting a lot of scenes / moments from the original though, either as homage or because they can't think of new stuff.
Definitely a number of shots/frames lifted straight from the anime movie.
Somewhat surprised that they did the whole 'naked' thing - a cunning way of getting more blokes into the movie theater if there ever was one!
Actually does have quite a cool cyber-punk feel to it, which there isn't much of these days. I'm moving away from thinking it would stink (when I heard that they had white-washed the Majors character) to a cautious optimism.
Looks gorgeous, and the Depeche Mode remix sounds killer.
Hopefully the storyline is coherent and well scripted. Then this will be a great film.
If this is done well, I'd like to see the same treatment given to Akira. That story is fantastic.
We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".
“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”
I still need to actually watch the original show...
You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!
*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs.
Here's the whole song off the trailer, a cover/remix of Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode:

Visually it's hitting all the right marks. I actually like the scenes lifted from the animation. I think they've done a very good job of translating them to live action (particularly liked the guy who gets hit and spins in the air).
The whole "they've taken my past", "who am I", "everything is a lie" stuff though is very off putting (assuming the whole "lie" thing is referring to who the Major is).
They need to put the intro music from the original in. For me that chanting soundtrack is iconic.

Yeah, it is seriously missing that traditional Bulgarian singing.
I really want to like this. There isn't anywhere near enough cyberpunk on our screens, and the original story could be told in a new, really interesting way.
But the trailer leaves me a bit meh. They've put in a new plot that doesn't sound very interesting at all. I hope the Major searching for her identity is just the starting point, it takes her in to a mystery about artificial AI or something. But I kind of worry that it'll end being a lot like the latest Robocop.
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
I guess I'm disappointed that they got away from the original music (see above) as it was so iconic and really set the mood for the Anime. Try playing the original music and then watch the trailer with the sound off & I think you'll see what I mean.
I'll remain cautiously optimistic. Definitely some things pulled right out of the Anime so perhaps it'll be OK.

Anvildude: "Honestly, it's kinda refreshing to see an Ork vehicle that doesn't look like a rainbow threw up on it."
It looks like they took all the cool action scenes from the GITS 1995 movie, and the Stand Alone Complex tv show seasons 1 and 2. Cut the story out and put in 'generic hollywood "plot" of amnesia can't remember past but you made me into a bad ass machine and i'll use it to find out my past .
I have the same expectations of this movie as I have when I buy a lotto ticket. It would be nice to win the millions but it's really not going to happen. The visual effects in this movie will be fantastic. The 'plot' will be horribad. It will be a o0o look at the pretty effects and ignore the story.
I always thought the original was kind of an over rated thing to begin with (Blade Runner with breasts, essentially), with some neat elements, so don't have particularly high expectations. The territory has already been tread for a while, and ScarJo is no great actress, so I am hoping the SFX and scenery will at least make it a spectacle and give some visual inspiration.
I've got a bad feelin about this. Scarlet has an almost "Green Lantern" vibe about her. It clearly isn't as bad as what they did to Ryan Renalds but the CGI still doesn't fit up well with her non-CGI hair and face.

Subsequent trailers have not made me very optimistic for this. It just feels like someone decided to take Total Recall and slap a Ghost in the Shell skin over it without giving a damn that the final product wouldn't even look like Ghost in the Shell if not for the several recognizable set pieces lifted right out of SAC.

The scene in the latest trailer where an adult Major wakes up in an artificial body for what seems to be the first time definitely got a raised eyebrow from me. Being a full conversion borg from an early age is IMO a important part of her background and the franchises recurring theme of what makes a person human. That said, the "creative" editing we seem to get in trailers these days combined with the usual GITS false memory shenanigans could explain a lot.
