Hey all,

So I really haven't played Warhammer Fantasy Battle since 1st and 2nd edition. My cousin and I (maybe 2 years ago) have started playing 8th edition. We have been playing a couple of times a month and I have a question. I play Chaos Warriors and my cousin plays Lizardmen.

Just recently he came to the table with a new item in his list...Harmonic Convergence. The way he has presented this to me it that every time he tries to cast a spell during his magic phase, he can add two additional dice to cast his spell (or each time he channels dice).

So lets say he rolled for how many dice in his pool and he rolled (2) 6's. And he wants to cast a low level spell that costs say...10. He has been choosing 1 die, then adding 2 addition dice (Harmonic Convergence). Is this correct? If he kept trying to cast the same spell (the same way) over and over during his magic phase he would essentially have 36 dice during his magic phase to keep casting that spell. Choosing 1 die each time, then adding 2 for Harmonic Convergence? 36 dice during the magic phase seems excessive.

If this is the case, guess I better find a way to deal with him! LOL!

...see ya Chaos

Thanks for any help.

J

For starters, you cannot attempt to cast the same spell twice in one magic phase from the same wizard.

The extra two dice to cast must come from a special ability or magic item. The power stone magic item allows you to add two extra magic dice to cast a spell. This is a one use only item though, and cannot be used multiple times.

The lizardmen might have a special ability to cast on the lore of heavens. I'm not really sure as I've never played lizardmen, the only guy I know of who has bonuses to the lore of heavens is tetoeko, but I'm pretty sure that's just loremaster: heavens and a special rule for comet of cassandora.

It sounds to me like he's cheating, or doesn't know the rules. You should probably refer to the magic section of the 8th edition rules.

edit:

Ok, I got confused between the spell: Harmonic Convergence and the Slaan ability: Harmonic Convergence. He gets to roll two extra times to channel dice, so three times in total. That means he can generate dice on a 6 when determining how many dice you get for your casting/dispel pool at the beginning of the magic phase. It has absolutely nothing to do with casting spells. And remember you are still capped at 12 dice maximum for your power dice pool. So it doesn't matter how many extra dice he generates if you've already hit the maximum of 12.

Thanks for the reply. I don't believe he is cheating, we just haven't played a whole lot yet and are inexperienced still. Great news though for me! I now that people have talked about how the armies through the years has been imbalancedone, but I knew that this seemed very powerful. Thanks again!

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Slaan magic is not really a problem, as a Slaan is hard to hide and vulnerable to a lot of stuff you can take. Chimera especially. Alt option is to get a Chaos lord in challenge range, kill the frog then mop up, there are a number of ways you can tool up a Chaos lord for assassination, including flight.

Yes you can expect the lizards will have their 12 dice every magic phase, but you can take that. Warriors of Chaos armies have good saves vs save or die magics. Good I, good T, good S, even dwellers isnt as scary as it is for most other armies.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Honestly if you're playing them according to the rules Slann tend to be giant lumps that do very little beyond cost 300+pts. The way the 8e magic phase is balanced the statistically expected result of any given magic phase will be that nothing happens; I started a Lizardmen army to play 8th with during the great army sell-off around the AoS launch and in closing on a dozen games now my Slann has yet to successfully cast a spell.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

Sorry, I have to ask.

How has your Slaan been unable to cast a spell in a dozen games?

I've been able to use magic more effectively in 8th ed. than any other edition of warhammer ever.

You must be having terrible luck or your opponent great luck.

I can easily get through 1-2 spells per magic phase with the 8th edition system.

Just like Brutus, I find 8th edition the best edition for actually managing to get spells through.
