Now that I (finally!) finished my nids, I was looking at going Deathwing and getting rid of a good portion of my original Dark Angels force that I started to play with back in 3rd ed, but given a new Codex will be here sooner or later, I decided the best thing to do was wait and look at reworking (and very possibly repainting) my current force to play a little better.

<?

Obviously all those Rhinos and Razorbacks aren?t useful anymore, and my Land Raider?s better as a conversation piece, but there?s a hardware store near by, so going ?podder seems like a fun alternative, and it?s fairly easy to set DA squads up for sitting on objectives and holding, or to deep strike in and seize targets.

So, I?m playing with a possible list here and wanted to get some feedback, since I haven?t honestly touched my marines much since the new codex came out.

-HQ-

Terminator Librarian (Fear, Fury, Force Weapon & Stormbolter)

 -Terminator Command Squad (4 ? 2 ACs, Sarge w/ Power Weapon & Combi-plas)

 -Drop Pod

-Elites-

Terminator Squad (5)

-2 ACs, Sarge w/ Power Sword & Storm Bolter

 -Drop Pod

Dreadnaught

 -AC, CCW, E. Armor, Smoke

 -Drop Pod

-Troops-

Tactical Squad (10)

-Multimelta, Melta, Kraks, Vet. Sarge w/ 2 lightning claws

 -Drop Pod

Tactical Squad (10)

-Lascannon, Plasmagun, Frags, Vet. Sarge w/ Plasma Pistol, Power Sword

 -Drop Pod

Tactical Squad (10)

-Lascannon, Plasmagun, Frags, Vet. Sarge w/ Plasma Pistol, Power Sword

 -Drop Pod

-Fast Attack-

Assault Squad (10)

-2 Plasma Pistols, Meltabombs, Vet. Sarge w/ Power Sword, Plasma Pistol

Assault Squad (10)

-2 Plasma Pistols, Meltabombs, Vet. Sarge w/ Power Fist, Plasma Pistol

-Heavy-

Devastator Squad (8)

-2 Heavy Bolters, 2 Plasma Cannons, Sargeant* w/ bolter

-Drop Pod

*I didn?t think Stubborn/No Retreat would help Devastators that much?if they fall back, they can?t shoot but might regroup and shoot next turn. If they stand and get assaulted, they can?t shoot and may well get lost in CC.

Thoughts?

Personally I like the idea of using combi weapons on the tac sgts too. One of the real strengths of drop pods is the ability to unleash a withering hail of fire on the turn they drop. Combi-plas or combi-meltas will do that job well. The heavy weapons, on the other hand, can't do that. I'm not sure they'll really work out well for you.

The dev squad, too, will be doing nothing on the turn they drop in. Also, while stubborn might not be good for the devs, a power weapon of some kind might. Of all your units, the devs are most vulnerable and likely to be assaulted. You could free up a bunch of points by dropping the lightning claws. That's a huge expense for a sgt. model.

I like alot about the list.  I've been messing around with making my space wolves into an all drop pod army.  I'd drop the assault squads and the devistators.  I like using two terminator squads.  I just run the two termie squads with three squads of grey hunters and a dreadnaught.  There is nothing so fun as dropping in behind a couple of loaded up wave serpents and blowing them to hell in a hail of bolter fire with a melta gun for added effect.  You might drop the dreadnaught to.  My dreadnaught drops in and gets toasted on the next turn every game.  I have to take one as a command unit because I am compelled to take three HQ's once I go over 1500 pts, but otherwise they just can't hold out on their own.  The more terminators you can squeeze in the better.  They can withstand tremendous amounts of fire and dish it right back out in the shooting phase or assault phase.

Forget about taking the deathwind missile launchers on the pods.  With only a 12 inch range they are likely to scatter right on top of the disembarking marines.

Good luck with your drop pod army.  They are really fun to play.

Thanks for the feedback.

If I don't use Devastators, that's fine - I think I'll put enough firepower down anyhow. But what do people reccomend for taking objectives in a DP army if I don't use some sort of fast option? Just drop in and hope I don't scatter too badly?

Well if you're going pure drop pods, then pretty much your only options are tac marines or terminators. If you're willing to leave a bit more to chance, you have some options for other deep striking units. Battle Company land speeders would work. I've seen several drop lists that use them. Likewise, for DA, I think a full out Stubborn Assault Squad would do all right. It won't fall back from shooting, even without stubborn, so the worst that can happen to it is have it sit in one spot, hopefully right on top of an objective. You've already got the assault squads in your list, so it seems like you're ok with using them. Give them Stubborn and they should do just fine for your purposes.
