In breif - I really like what I see! I plan to stat out a Squad ASAP. It seems like that part is a minigame unto itself ...

Sounds great.

Tinkering with lists is probably my favorite part of gaming.

Definitely going to try and convince my sci fi group into this.

Playing: Droids (Legion), Starks (ASOIAF), BB2
Working on: Starks (ASOIAF), Twilight Kin (KoW). Droids (Legion)

Got my copy yesterday, looks very fun. Lots of tables and modifiers, but lots of freedom too. Should be a great ruleset for forging a narrative

A good write up. I agree with all stated.

I enjoyed over through the book myself. I really like how combat is, and not having stat lines per say, save the armor stats.

I feel this can be a much faster version of Infinity. I love their models, and the game was fun, but its gotten way way way to deep for our groups liking. There far to much to do in that game.

In its place ive taken my Aleph and Pan Oceana models and made 2 warbands to hopefully try after Christmas.

I did break the one rul of 30-70 exp per character. I don't know how much it will off set any balance, Achilles being 86 points and Joan being 76. Both bands are still 199pts!

What I didn't like is so many tables. It cries for a QRS. I'm glad you said they plan to release it. Where did you see that?

It also needs more weapons. No sniper rifle is really weird. Needs missile launchers also of various types. More weapons in general really.

I also don't understand Energy weapons. Do they just ignore your armor value? It doesent really say...unless I'm missing it

The Lead Adventurer's Forum and the Rogue Stars Fan Facebook group is where there has been mention of a QRS. I think the needler rifles are intended to be your sniper rifles. They have silent which allows the user to remain hidden when shooting. I think there are no missile launchers due to space limitations, only 64 pages to use, and the focus being on infantry as opposed to vehicles. IMHO, shooting a person with a missile launcher would be overkill. Save that for when there is a supplement that adds light vehicles. The main thing which energy weapons is they can react differently with certain atmospheric conditions rolled when determining the mission, location, and complication. Same goes for some other weapons. Energy in and of itself does nothing, but it can act differently with different situations. I hope this helps with your questions.

Dang it! I pre-ordered mine and haven't gotten it or Chosen Men yet! There goes my credibility as a reviewer!

Thanks for the write up.

This might be a personal pet-peeve, but i'd definitely love reading more reviews that happen after people have sufficiently tested a game. :-p Back in the day I worked in print game's journalism (video-games), and it would be like me submitting a review based on trailers and the design document. :-p

A pet peeve of mine is when people confuse my overviews with reviews ...

No worries, I sympathize with your point which is why I call these things overviews.

Hey, I really appreciate your overview of the game. I have been very curious about this one.

Nice Overview.

I've only given my copy a brief glance through. I'm waiting til the QRS comes out, but I'm looking forward to trying it out at some point.

Thanks for the overview. I asked elsewhere but can you make a space marine squad (i.e. supersoldiers in power armor) with the rules? That would be a big selling point for me locally with the exGW crowd.

Technically yes, but you'd have to increase the points limit allowed for individuals and the squad as a whole. You couldn't make a whole squad of them with the default confines. But the rules definately support it if you relax the squad building parameters.

I get that feeling that if you increase the Exp for squads, you can make a very good game of "movie marines" vs normal humans.

Thanks for the answers. I don't know if it makes a difference for squad building rules but at most I was refering to a combat squad of 5 guys or more realistically maybe three "movie marines" in the ruleset as a way to entice former GW (mainly marine) players.

Heavy Power Armor costs 50XP and you have a starting limit of 70XP per character. So yeah you would need to disregard the Squad building rules but you could stat up a BL style SM.

I wrote up some background and another squad list, this time inspired by some cool minis I ordered from CP Models.

Another miniatures-inspired Squad write up as well as some musings on making stock enemy squads for campaigns:

It's so fun, going through all these ranges that are already available with a new perspective thanks to a new rule set.

After re-reading your overview, something about the scenario generation system rung a bell. I am pretty sure In Her Majesty's Name uses a similar approach where you determine the scenario, complications, and then location all of which can impact each other.

However, I can not remember if this is a staple of Ganesha Games/Andrea Sfiligoi as well, or something new that was brought to the table for Rogue Stars.

This is not in Advanced Song of Blades and Heroes. I am not sure about any of Andrea's other games though.
