I've gotten a couple of games in, and thus far I'm fairly impressed. The
Team Covenant video of them playing with the starters seems to sum up the game pretty well.
Yes, it's a
CCG. That will reasonably put some people off. There are certainly powerful Legendary cards, which will be viewed by some as 'pay to win'. I haven't got enough games under my belt to say one way or the other.
BUT, with 30 card decks and a limit of 2 of each card, along with a smaller set size, and what seems to be a reasonable release schedule (I think 3 sets per year is the target?), of all the '
ccg sins', I think they've reduced or even minimized a number of them.
My experiences with the game have been positive. The dice are very high quality, cracking boosters for a bit was fun (I'll probably go with singles purchases from here on out, I learned long ago when to walk away from cracking packs in my Magic days). I hope to play casually with friends over beers, and perhaps $5 or $10 tournaments locally, nothing extravagant or hyper costly beyond a couple starters and some cards to round things out.
If you're familiar with
FFG's LCGs, there is some of the 'buy multiples of starters' that they're known for (especially with Netrunner), in that there are some cards you only get 1 of in the starters, and are limited to *only* starters. With most singles sites I've seen putting the cost of cards found in said starters astronomically high, that can be a consideration if one wanted to play in tournaments or 'competitively'.
Why pay $15 for a second Finn when you can get the full Rey starter that Finn is found in for about that much?
It'll be interesting to see how things develop from here on out, I'm hoping to get some more games in over the next week, and definitely before I make much more in terms of purchases. If nothing else, I can currently sell my valuable cards at a stiff discount and still likely come out ahead, so it's fairly low pressure for me, but that's certainly not going to be the case for everyone.
