I just bought some Demigryph Knights, and I cant decide to put a lance or a halberd on them for my upcoming game against wood elves.

Lances all the way.

You don't want to lose on that 1+ (assuming we're talking 8th edition WHFB, 2+ if it's 9th age, though since halberds are cheaper there's a case for them too).

Let the chicken do the grinding, it's just not worth it to lose a pip of armour save for +1S on a single attack.

Besides the +2 strength charge stacks with the improved save. You don't really want demigryphs to grind, you want them to win and win quickly.

But what if they do end up getting stuck into a grind, and my opponent has a forest dragon.

You can't plan for every "if" like that. What if your opponent gets 3 consecutive Purple Suns off before you can do anything with those knights? See, can't focus on all of that, just plan on letting them do what they do best. Also, if you don't think you can take down a forest dragon, stay away from it.

Just remember, the Knights themselves aren't doing the work here. All the killing is being done by the Demigryphs themselves. Don't worry about the knights, they only have a single attack. When it comes to grinding with another unit, the 1+ save will benefit you more.

You don't really want demigryphs to grind, you want them to win and win quickly.

I'll second this, Knights in general should be used for flank purposes, or a head on attack if winning is almost a certainty. Try not to get cavalry bogged down as much as possible.

AoS is pure garbage
Kill Primaris, Kill the Primarchs. They don't belong in 40K
40K is fantasy in space, not sci-fi

Lance is the best option in 8th. If you do end up getting stuck in a fight the extra armour save is far more useful then +1 strength. Especially since the knight only has the 1 attack.

Remember, the Demigryph is there to do damage, the Knight is just there for the armour save.

As stated by others, you will be fine.

I wouldnt mind a forest dragon vs demigryphs, the demis have a chance of tanking a dragon long enough to be of use, and the unit will be considerably cheaper than its opponent. What makes demis so effective is that they dont cost too much and are effective in small numbers, three or four is fine. And you are the side with the massed artillery.

The shield is the most valuable option for the unit because of maxed out protection. Even against that dragon you get 4+, not bad really.
The lance is the second as it helps you win quickly, and if it doesnt then its still not getting in the way of the shield..
I dont see much use for the halberd, I would prefer a hand weapon and shield option to halberd.
