Wanting to start the game, I wondered whether or not the Haqq-islam part of Operation Red Veil was (while eye-catchy) good or not. For me a solid rule-set is relevant (I mean, I don't mind losing, but it's not like I want to be constantly in an uphill battle unless I proactively seek it.)

There is some info below on how to expand each side of Red Veil into a competitive army:

http://www.data-sphere.net/bostrias-challenge-red-veil-yu-jing/

and the infinity Haaq-islam section can give you more details on where they sit as a faction power wise:

Well I can't comment on how competitive the red veil starter is but I would say both operations (both Red Veil and Icestorm) are a really good place to start the game. They come with two factions but also some scenery, a mat and a starter rule-book with some missions to help you learn the game. It may be worth it just to help you get started in infinity since the game is rather complex and different from other miniature games in my experience as someone who just started infinity myself.

The Haqqislam set in Red Veil is pretty good.

You get 3 Rifle/Light Shotgun Ghulam, which are your go-to light infantry. I don't think I've ever made a list without 2 or 3 of these guys.

A Zhayedan with Breaker Rifle, which is probably the most useful profile out of that unit. Breaker Rifles might not sound scary until you get to grips with the rules. They're pretty terrifying once you understand how they work.

A Rifle/Light Shotgun Khawarij, which is a good flanker unit. With super jump there's pretty much nowhere they can't go, and their combination of Rifle, Light Shotgun and Grenades makes them good at short to medium ranges.

An Al Fasid with HMG, Light Grenade Launcher with Smoke, Heavy Pistol and Mines with Minelayer. All on a tough Heavy Infantry. That's a pretty awesome package. He's a little pricey, but a great option.

The only model that people aren't so keen on is the Tuareg Sniper. Their best profiles are their specialist profiles, but a TO Camo sniper is still an unexpected surprised covering long fire lanes. Unfortunately there's just cheaper options that can do the same thing.

I'd suggest also trying to get a hold of the Haqqislam model from Dire Foes 6 Defiant Truth. Her name is Leila Sherif and she's a badass. Short to mid range firepower with a Shock Marksman Rifle, Killer Hacking Device so she can do some Hacking Classified Objectives as well as push buttons, and the ability to put herself in Impersonation which is pretty nasty.

Thanks for the advice! (though I was honestly looking out for saladin).

Saladin is a fine model to use. Bit of 'obvious commander syndrome' but he has an ability that gives you an extra Regular order (because his Lieutenant order can be used by anyone), but if you can manage that (either through hiding him or with a Chain of Command model, the Hassassin Farzan) he can give you a bit of an edge. Regular orders are the lifeblood of the game. In fact the Red Veil starter is all units that will be in the Ramah Taskforce sectorial, which will be the sectorial Saladin will be in. So he's a pretty thematic choice as well.

If you need *just* the Haqqislam side of Red Veil, then that's something I can help with if you like.

You can easily hide Saladhin by using a few Hafzas that are holo'd to look like Saladhin. I usually run around 3-4 Saladhin models in my list. Makes for a fun shell game!

Shae can obtain anything you want. He is like the mafia, but without the ilegal part. He runs a pretty useful service where he splits boxes and sells the separate contents to people.

There's lots of Infinity platers here in Barcelona tho, so I'd say you have a pretty good chance to find someone to split the box with.

I'd get a demo before buying anything thought, having played a game makes reading the rules a lot easier to understand. I don't know where you usually go (if you usually go to any shop) but Goblintrader (C/Girona 25) and Infernal Forge (C/Velia 83) have leagues starting/going on right now. And I guess Drobbit still exists (C/ Melcior de Palau 143), and they have somthing going on, but I dunno.

And just in case you live out there in the steppes, I know there's a community in Cerdanyola del Vallès.

There's this little thing:

You can get in contact with people who kind of represent Infinity and make demos and things.

Don't worry, the Haqqislam portion of Red Veil(the 6 starter models, but not the Al Fasid) is slated to be a Januabuary release.

Shae can totally take care of your requests. Some of the best prices even after you add in shipping for someone who wants piecemeal of sets instead of the whole set.

The HMG Al Fasid is a pretty great unit though, so I'm not sure missing out on it is a great idea.

Still alive and strong. But I'll try to get Norman's fat ass to work, that or go to infernal forge, turns out it's next to the L5 line.
