This question came about in the Kingdom Death thread, specifically on page 149 when a user asked for some of the new images to be spoilered due to their NSFW nature.

To which a Mod responded with this: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/4440/503919.page#9117548

Seriously!

You clicked on a Kingdom Death thread.

While you were at work.

You get what you deserve.

Because of the "known" nature of Kingdom Death's aesthetic, spoilers aren't needed as it is assumed that every reader knows what they are getting in a KD thread.

How is that possibly a responsible ruling for a site with as much traffic and as many new users as Dakka has? Is this really a good precedent to set?

Not everyone knows about Kingdom Death, and not everyone starts a thread on page 1 and reads from there. Some people click on the latest post to read, or jump to the last page.

The point is you cannot assume everyone is armed with the knowledge of what a Kingdom Death (or Brother Vinni, or Prodos Space Crusade, or any of the multitude of niche model/game makers) thread will contain.

Alpharius clarified his position here:

For better or for worse, KD is an 'art' of sorts - a WELL established sort at that.

If you're worried about that sort of thing - especially at work - you shouldn't go anywhere near a KD thread.

At work.

But it again assumes that the user knows about KD's aesthetic and can make the choice to avoid a thread based on that knowledge.

So, when are NSFW tags appropriate?

I mean judging by the rules the stuff should not even be on the site..

"It also should go without saying that swearing, profanity, sexual references, etc, are strictly forbidden, including all images that are posted on or uploaded to our site. Remember that we have users of all ages and that Dakka should be a welcoming place for everyone to enjoy."

"Graphic or otherwise inappropriate images (and even links to such images) will be removed on sight"

I honestly do not see how that thread is even still up.

When 'that stuff' is part of minatures or game materials, it is allowed here.

Not to get too Potter Stewart on everyone here, but it really is not that hard to figure out - common sense and all that.

And my initial post was intended to be in good sport humor - but I realize that doesn't always translate on The Internet, so absolutely, my apologies if anyone's sensibilities were offended.

But as for the rest, I think this reply:

I am sympathetic to the idea that maybe there should be a spoiler there (I was a little surprised there wasn't), but I am having trouble imagining the person who is new to Dakka, doesn't know anything about Kingdom Death, is at work, and didn't start at page 1 of the thread. It shouldn't take more than 5-6 posts to realize that you don't want your co-workers walking by and asking "What are you doing here that is not work?" while in that particular thread! At some point, people have to take responsibility for their own actions, such as reading through a hundred plus pages of a Kingdom Death thread at work and not realizing that it was perhaps not appropriate.

sums it up perfectly.

One thing I would ask is that people be proactive in adding NSFW tags to the gallery whether for their own stuff or others.

Among other things NSFW will stop the images from being pushed out on FB and other platforms where people are not clicking on them by choice but they are showing up next to mom's vacation photos and your old room mate's baby pics.

My general criteria is... if you have to ask the answer is yes. If you look at an image and say 'should this be NSFW?' then do it. It hurts no one and helps the site and users avoid embarrassment.

Kindom death mini's are risque, but NSFW? depends off course also in which country you are, but as far as i know only when nudity is involved should there be an NSFW tag

One of the recent KS updates is a lady with a gigantic penis-snake jutting out of her abdomen.
So yeah, actually NSFW occasionally.

Nope the humour did not come across. At All

I had seen this Kingdom of Death mentioned in passing in other threads - saw there was a huge thread on it and figured I would click on the latest thread to see what the fuss was about.

Looked quite interesting but was a little surprised with a couple of the images - not a problem for me as was not at work but given that other threads - say Cousin Vini's have been called out directly and told to NSFW spoiler or pt it on the thread title I do nto understand the terse replies stating it was my fault for not being aware of the content before I saw it!

I am not bothered by the depictions personally but I do think that a little consistency would be in order in stating something is or is not Safe for Work.

I've added a NSFW warning to the thread title - hopefully this will work for everyone!

This is why I was surprised by the "you came in to the thread you get what you get" response from Alpharius.

This is my stance summed up perfectly. Consistency is key, and the site purports to be a welcoming place for everyone, and some people have problems with breasts and penises even when depicted in resin and plastic.

Huh! I did not know that. Will try to remember to add NSFW to any images I come across in the gallery that require it.

It's pretty new, we had an incident a few months ago and Lego added that safeguard.

Is there any way to update the quick rate page to allow tagging images? Even if it is just a nsfw button to auto tag images?
