Hey Dakka,

It’s been a while since I’ve posted. I like to create dioramas and I posted some I made a few years back. They are in my sig. Anyway — I’m making another one(!) so I thought I’ll come back and write about my progress, seeing as it’s folks like your good selves that help keep me going (and coming back) in the hobby.

As per usual, I will be writing each and every step in my blog here: www.rusty-robot.co.uk, but I’ll be re-posting most of the progress here so I can reap the rewards of your guys comments along the way.

So… the new project. The scene features a young man, stood from a back alley fire escape, watch his date walk away down the alley as they are unknowingly photographed by a hidden paparazzi.

I’ll keep you all updated as I go. Here’s the first thing I put together:

I've started on many finer details of the diorama already, putting the cart somewhat before the horse. I say that because I'm still skirting around constructing the buildings for the alley itself. I'm still working out various plans of where things will go and how... so it's fruitless building major components if things are only going to change. So, I'm doing things like:

Making scale ventilation ducting:

Making the fire escape:

Planning (and making) the plinth base. The alley plans can be seen sketched in pencil:

This is all being made to a 1:35 scale. I will be scratch building most, but other details will be made from kits.

Looking cool so far. Strange how I'm so impressed by the ventilation duct and fire door, probably because the attention to detail really nails the look.

Thanks guys. Only a few things done so far, but I'm looking to start work on things like the buildings soon, so they will be more to show. I've got a shopping cart and waste container to show off soon. The aim is to super detail this particular diorama.

Set of stairs done:

And just built (but not finished) this radiator which will be spotted just inside the fire escape doorway:

Here is a rough plan and size of one of the four buildings I will be constructing for this diorama. It's the end of an apartment block and will feature iron fire escape stairs, sach windows (with Venetian blinds!), Victorian archways and more detailing.

Other buildings will have metal shutters, cladding, doorways etc...

After realising MiniArt's window sections are way too big (even at 1:35 scale), everything here will be scratch built - apart from the iron stairs.

Looking to start construction on the buildings soon.

Wooowweeee... If the buildings match the level of detailing on those smalle rcomponents this is going to be epic!

FAV for me is that staircase! VVV pro looking job! Looks like plastic sections?? V cool anyway!

Looking forward to seeing more!

As my father once said to me : You cant polish a turd... but you can roll it in glitter!

Thanks! And yes, the detailing will continue on the buildings. I'm using scale brick section mounds to build the buildings so it'll all be scratchbuilt. I can't take credit for the stairs as it's a plastic kit but, as written on my blog, I did a lot of chopping (scaling mostly) from its original self.

More soon!

In effort to make some more leaps and bounds, as opposed to concentrating on details, I've begun constructing some buildings. I'm using foam board as the skeleton, upon which a brick plaster will be applied later.

The foam board I'm using isn't the best so I may end up replacing it all. Above is the apartment block which will later have details like a shop front and an iron fire escape on the side.

I've begun making the sach windows too. Each measures 45mm x 25mm. I started by making a jig, which not only makes the job easier but also will keep a uniformity throughout each one:

The jig on the left makes the window frame and the one on the right makes the sach windows themselves. Depending on the success, I'll post how to make these. Unfortunately I can't make the entire window from wood strip as it's seemingly impossible to source strip so small. So I'm using half wood and half styrene to complete it.

I've also did a test round of the Venetian blinds. These will fit perfectly into the frames I'm making above. I need to perfect the jig to drill each slat still, but I'm happy with this as a test:

Finally, here's a mock test I quickly threw together to get a sense of scale and size. This gives a decent idea of what's happening:

Thanks buddy. They are a little fiddly to make but the results are worth it. I'll be making more later this week so I'll be sure to share. I'm aiming to get some major construction done by week's end too.

I love your dioramas Rusty - I can't help but hear the voice of Max Payne from the original PC game narrate the scene like some form of film noir.

The fire-escape is fantastic, as is the radiator. Your work and that of MagosBiff are what inspire me to pack as much detail into my miniatures as possible.

Incidentally, fancy having a go at real sash windows? Me and the missus want the front of our house doing

Very kind of you to say, Elnibbus. Loving the Max Payne reference. I have fond memories of playing that, the slo mo was always the dogs balls.

I'm really striving for super detail on this one, which I know will take me longer, but it'll be worth it.

Incidentally, I'm thinking of changing the scene. I was thinking of the following: a team of soldiers ominously scout an urban alleyway as a photographer snaps photos of them from an open fire door. The main reason for the potential swap is MAiM's models I'm using just aren't cutting the mustard for me. I think their casting process is inferior on these particular models. Instead, I'm thinking about using Legend, who are unparalleled in casting quality:

What do you guys think to the narrative swap?

In regards to your offer, can I bring the Dremel?

Sounds like an interesting narrative swap... Would this be a covert black-ops mission? Possibly on US soil? I know the Yanks are forever paranoid about deployed troops on home turf (it's as if they're worried about guvmint control or something).

Plus you may need something a bit bigger than a Dremel - I have one of those but it's speed control is busted. As such, it's either off or OOOOOONNNNNNN.

That's exactly what it could be. The fact it's military in an urban environment - and a photographer snapping them - raises a whole bunch of questions. Which is what I like. I'm torn, as this was the other idea I originally had. Hmmm...

And I've a jack hammer somewhere that could do the job!

Mini update: I've just bought six LEGEND PRODUCTION figures to execute the alternative narrative. Let's see which way the wind blows!

Looking to start some brick work on Friday.

Hooray! Bricks!

How are you going to apply them? I've seen a method I'd like to replicate by peeling the top layer of card from foamboard and using a shaper to punch in the individual bricks. Time consuming as fook but the effect is great.

Oh wow, that does sound quite the effort! I will be using two techniques. The first is a 1/35 brick mould, which makes medium sized wall sections in one. The other is a stencil technique, which is also 1/35, that you can apply to a sheet of foam board, lay on the plaster and then peel away for the brick effect. Both are very successful and each handy in different applications. I'll be using a combination of both and I will document the steps.

Ah you pre-empted my request for a guide on your approach!

I'll give the technique I mentioned a go and we can compare

Small update, finished the windows:

Unfortunately had to finish them in styrene as sourcing wood strip small enough (without cutting) is seemingly impossible!

I also molded loads of brick sections which I will post a photo of soon.

Very kind. Still a long way to go yet, but with each detail I'm getting that one step further. I do, however, consistently remind myself it's about the journey not the destination!

Thanks! Lots more construction happening on Friday. I'm hoping to have most of the apartment block built (there are five part buildings in this one diorama!)

Hopefully we'll both see on Friday! I'm thinking I will have 4 but possibly 5. One I receive them, I'll try some dry placements and see how they fit
