I'm in the process of planning a 15mm army based on Copplestone's barbarian models. I've always wanted to use the 15mm Copplestone miniatures for something worthwhile, and when one of my friends told me he had been talking with some of his regular opponents about creating historical 15mm armies for KoW, I knew this was the opportunity I had been waiting for.

As far as I can tell, they've been planning to use 15mm miniatures, while all the distances in the game remains the same. This prescribes that the units adhere to the conventional table of unit base sizes, such as troop unit being 100x40mm big, although the number of actual 15mm miniatures used would be 12-16, and mounted on one large or several smaller bases. I originally considered using 50x40mm sized bases, each with 7 miniatures on average, because I felt it would make my units more flexible, and allow me to combine them to create regiment and horde sized units. At this point, I tried to find examples of other 15mm KoW-armies, but a quick web search only revealed one such project: http://ittybittysoldiers.blogspot.no/2016/06/15mm-kow-tons-of-starks-and-baratheons.html , - the other people who play KoW using 15mm miniatures, appear to either use armies they already own, which were collected originally for a different system and are therefore based differently, or they invent their own system of measurement, or both.

That's when I decided to try out bases which are size 50x20mm. Each base has 4 miniatures, which means a troop unit will consist of 16 miniatures, a regiment 32 miniatures, and so on. I already own a handful of the Copplestone 15mm miniatures from an earlier project, and I've experimented with them, gluing them to cardboard bases.

My idea is to base the miniatures in such a way that the army is also suitable for other game systems which utilizes 10-15mm miniatures, such as Warmaster, Hail Caesar and Hordes of the Things. At the same time, I would like the army to adhere to conventional KoW rules. However 40mm is really the standard width used by other 10-15mm game systems, such as Warmaster and HotT, and I'm now considering switching to 40mm bases. In which case, my troops would only be 80mm wide and not 100mm.

I suppose I could use five 40x20mm bases to create a troop, with the fifth base placed sideways either in the middle or at one of the sides of the unit (with the miniatures facing in the appropriate direction, this base would not be used if I was playing by other rule sets).

I would really appreciate any input and/or advice. I would include photos of my mock-ups, but I prefer taking photos of miniatures in daylight, and it will have to wait.

My advice would be to base on 40x40mm but make unit trays that would had some space between the individual bases to bring you to the standard KoW area when needed

For exemple :

Troop : two 40x40mm bases in 2x1 formation on a 100x40mm unit tray
Regiment : four 40x40mm bases in 2x2 formation on a 100x80mm unit tray
Horde : ten 40x40mm bases in 5x2 formation on a 200x80mm unit tray
Legion : fifteen 40x40mm bases in 5x3 formation on a 200x120mm unit tray

Note that for the hordes and legion you don't need to leave space on the unit tray, the area match perfectly when adding an additionnal base per line

If you don't want to leave empty space on the unit trays, then you can make small 20x40mm bases (and not 40x20) that would be used for troops and regiments with normal square bases, and those could even be reused for other historical wargames.

I feel your pain. I've got a bunch of 10mm and 28mm minis that I'm trying to dream up flexible basing for, with not much less agonising than your own. But one question first:

Does that mean that they are sticking to the 28mm base dimensions, or are you assuming that?

Otherwise, personally, I'd go with 40x20 bases to be compatible with Warmaster or HoTT. Although, not to muddy the waters further, but with 15mm minis, would you be better going with 50x25mm bases? If I recall HoTT, that's in the basing suggestions. Ditto for a couple of other multi-scale games. It'd solve your problems with building up 100mm-frontage units, but then you'd have deeper-than-usual units. But that's something I've been meaning to ask about KoW myself. Watch this space...

Sticking with 40x20 bases, I like the idea of a filler base to make up the dimensions. Wondered about that myself. Although, considering that a KoW regiment base would need ten 40x20 bases, I'd lean towards Jtrowell's suggestion of a movement tray. (Although pushing and wheeling a load of bases that are meant to be one solid block, is a bugbear of mine. Even for as few as ten bases!) I'd encourage you to search for 'sabot bases' around gaming forums and blogs, to see how others do it. Here's one to start with:

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.
