I was cleaning out my basement the other day, when I came across my poor, unloved copy of Dreadfleet.

When it came out, I was a bit put off by the setting - the Vampire Counts weren't close enough to the sea I guess, so they decided there was a pocket dimension the villains lived in, called the "Galleon's Graveyard," which was full of silliness like skull shaped islands and giant turtles.

But, some years later... this all looks much more sensible in the mortal realms. The enormous human ship with a steam operated Sigmar on the prow feels more in scale with the Sigmar worship of AOS, while the skull-encrusted setting could easily be within Shyish, and explained simply as a result of the magic running around there.

I'll have to give it a second look, imagining it as an AOS story. And maybe, one day, finally actually play this thing...

Hmm, that's a interesting thought. Definitely could've been a influence from AoS early stage planning.

In the map you posted for the "what does the world look like" thread you can even see the sea beast the Skaven used as a ship.

I will say though that skull shaped islands aren't to farfetched for the Old World since the mountains have massive skulls on them as well.

I like this idea - might have to pull Dreadfleet out (and finally get round to painting the models), and do a little re-write on the background to set it in one of the Mortal Realms (which do you reckon... Beasts?).

Ohh, Dreadfleet models painted by MongooseMatt? Yes please!

I think the Beast realm would be the best bet, it'd be the most "normal" ocean and let you add in massive seabeasts for added fun.

I'd set the time-line to the Age of myth to put emphasis that these factions are all pirates and law-breakers in a time with relative peace.

The diverse human kingdoms of the time would also justify the Araby fleet. You could even put in that their meddling with djinns and lesser daemons opened a way for the chaos dwarves and Skaven.

That could tie-in to a good pirates-turned-heroes story as the battle becomes a mission to stop the chaos forces from using that early foot-hold to bring about a earlier age of chaos right under the Order pantheon's noses.

It's crazy how well that works out! I almost wonder if Dreadfleet would have been successful if released now instead of back then?

Eh, I remember the design videos back when 8th hit - Phil Kelly was speaking about how the warhammer world was one of "magic everywhere, living forests, mountains of screaming skulls" etc. To be honest dreadfleet seemed pretty ok for the warhammer world for me, back then. Even the game was decent and the many negative reviews were mostly dealing with some pretty bad results from the injury deck (which you didn't draw 99% of the time), some random events and the effect of the wind, which I can't remember right now, but I recall that it wasn't that much of a big deal. I regret I didn't buy it back then...

I CALL UPON THE POWERS OF THREADROMANCY!!

(cough, cough)

Ahem, sorry for bringing up this old topic but just had a literal shower thought while thinking about this topic.

The Empire ship has Sigmar depicted with a beard. He doesn't grow a beard until AoS.(barring two artwork examples that contradict all the clean shaven ones)

Was there any Old World statue depictions of bearded Sigmar? As far as I know he's always clean shaven or a little scruffy.

Azyrites definitely would have put that on.

You're absolutely right! Dreadfleet does make far more sense in AoS. Now I want it returned.

I would have brought that game in a heartbeat when it was out but I was a poor student at the time. I have a feeling GW won't feel comfortable touching naval games now after how it went down. Which is a shame really.

Plus aren't those beardless pieces of artwork set back in the age of myth and the age of chaos? (Sigmar fighting a giant beast and Sigmar fighting with archaon)? All artwork set in the current points of the timeline depict him with a mighty beard.

^ Exactly right, he gained the beard during his years of taking the mantle of king and leader rather than warrior and adventurer of his previous years.

Thinking more about the game side of things, would Man-of-war be better AoSified? I mean they could definitely bring Dreadfleet back into things but the way MoW had sea and air units would play right into the factions with skyborne forces and the increased shipping status of the cities due to the lands being more dangerous due to chaos corruption would fit exceedingly well wit the current timeline.

Dreadfleet was GW´s vietnam. Expect it to never sail the seas again.

That's depressing and true.

Maybe us here in dakka dakka could give it a try?

The main problem with the game was that random events were sufficient to cripple your opponent´s fleet. An appaling design flaw. The ships on the other hand were great.

GW´s new boargames/boxed games all cater to 40K and AoS players. It would be amazing, if a boxed game would be published that has no connection whatsoever to the existing 40K or AoS background. Something new or even old school. Dark Future would fit the bill and it will be soon available for video gamers. Mad Max-Fury Road was a huge success and GW could reap huge amounts of cash by pushing this retrogame.

However, the near future for us wargamers is bleak indeed. Endless formations of Uber-Marines stand ready to be forced down our throats. Sigh.

Well the thing about Dreadfleet is that it was a pet project more than anything. The designers said they made it on a whim so there's always the chance to get another.

But really I'm placing my bets on a MoA game more than anything for AoS to incorporate the Overlords small(ish) airships.

Also, definitely feel bad for 40k players and their flood of Space marines. Luckily we AoS gamers have entire new factions opened up to us.

Models of those bigger than ironclad overlord ships would be nice.

Oh heck yes!

The Grot pirates using massive leviathans would be amazing as well. (Imagine if they actually captured a God-beast and all you could get on the table is it's head while the base was clouds/water? )

Something akin to the Juggernaut of Age of Wonders III?

How about instead of Dreadfleet it's sky fleets? Or no.... fleet makes it sound so... boring.

Go with something like Sky Raiders. Nah even that is too generic, but it needs to have a good wind sounding name and get across combat.

Dark Skies
Air combat and survival in the mortal realms.

Sounds a little better in my opinion, but I'm sure someone else can do better.

Brimstone Skies also sounds great too.

You need a supplement for AoS that allows naval combat. For example, the german pirate skirmish game Freebooter´s Fate allows this with the rules in Raging Rivers. Crews are able to afford boats in order to navigate the streams.
However, you need an entire board consisting of water for AoS and perhaps one or two islands. An appropriate supplement term for it could be Wings of Fury - Beards in the Sky. Have a look for yourself:

Wings of Fury (Amiga-Version):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZSwdqg6VE4

Scenario (Bomb the Greenskins):
Dwemer airplane carrier (naval Juggernaut version of AoW III) launches a bomber balloon to bomb the living daylights out of carribean goblin forts. Meanwhile sneaky goblin submarines try to sink the juggernaut. Dwemers have scuba divers for submarine protection as Orks in 40K attack planes with Stormboyz. There is room for lots of other possible units. GW, do something interesting for a change!
