Hey all, and please forgive me in advance for the rant, but I have to say that after my experience at regionals this weekend, Fantasy Flight needs to come up with a better way of resolving draws than final salvo.
No disrespect to the guy who ultimately won the CT regionals (Brian of Battleground Games in Mass.) But he made the cut on a record that included two victories (including one against me) via final Salvo.
I really think that a draw - possibly including what used to be modified wins (and if so, i'd also include modified losses) - should get some points, but not the same as a clear victory. I know that mov accounts for some of that. But I think folks with a 4-1-1 record should rank a bit higher than actual 4-2.
If I had to design the way to rank swiss pairing, I'd probably set it so a win gets 4 points. A modified win gets 3, A draw 2, a "modified loss" 1 and a loss 0. ... or maybe 2 for a victory, 1 for a draw (including mov +/- 10 points, or 5) and zero for a loss. After that MOV settles different rankings with the same number of "record points".
The first version would set a clear disincentive to the intentional draw problem (except perhaps for two players with perfect records going into the final swiss round, but those folks would likely make the cut anyway). Most players in a tight tournament wouldn't be able to risk losing a relatively large number of "record points " going to the cut.
What do you think?
