Does't seem to be a joke: http://www.peta.org.uk/media/news-releases/peta-asks-games-workshop-ban-fur-warhammer-characters/

Does this make any sense? Does anyone think that a character in a fantasy game is going to get someone to buy real fur?

Luckily they don't seem to have noticed the amount of animals being ridden or pulling chariots let alone my screen of disposable warhounds.

Possibly, you do see the odd sort with long hair, beards, leather jackets gently emulating their favourite game/movie characters irl.
Most people discover GW during their formative years so normalising the wearing of fur probably sinks pretty deep.
I Larp and have leather on all and fur on one of my characters. I'm fairly sure that without GW I wouldn't be Larping.

PETA Wrote:
“From the mighty Leman Russ and Horus Lupercal to Chaos Warriors and the Sisters of Silence, Warhammer features an abundance of characters who wear what appear to be animal pelts, which just doesn’t add up”, the group says in the letter. “These battle-hardened warriors are known for their martial prowess – but wearing the skins of dead animals doesn’t take any skill.”

These skins are most likely trophies so I'd say there is some skill involved in taking down a Fenrisian wolf with your bare hands or strapping a Carnifex skull to the front of your Rhino.

Wearing it doesn't but slaying Doomwolf of Mt Killyoueasily did take skill and the warrior is going to damn well let you know it by wearing his trophy. It's also cold out there.

Nah, they're okay. It's human skin, not animal skin/fur. Everything's good.

That's ok because it's Human skin and Humans don't matter to PETA.

I would guess someones parents saw some images...

They can ask - if there is a reply I would hope its along the lines of the furs and skins are:

Symbols of decandence
Hard earned trophies - often from highly dangerous beasts

Necrons and Dark Eldar wear the skins of humans and others.

It's amusing they would use Leman Russ as an example when, ya know, he walks in to battle alongside 2 giant wolves that tear people apart.

Think of the poor Thousand Sons getting ripped apart by Freki and Geri...

They are against pet ownership too, thus Leman Russ is an example of animal slavery as well!

Lets all laugh and point at PETA, who only does this to get a news spot so they remain 'relevant'.

Banning fur in a table top game sounds a bit too much.

Speaking as a lefty, mostly vegetarian, occasional environmental activist, I'd just like to point out that PETA are a bunch of idiots who give animal rights activism a bad name.

PETA is the demonstration that bigotry and fanaticism can be present in anything. Is pointless to listen to them - is like listen fanatic islamists.

Generic characters disappearing? Elite units of your army losing options and customizations? No longer finding that motivation to convert?

this is so incredibly bad :v
1) there are no wolfs on Fenris
2) there are surely not foxes or little rabbit anywhere in the galaxy anymore
3) surely there is no peta in 40K cause there are no animals
4) the only animals that some rich has are at best cloned, but probably 100% totally artificial creation since original dna will surely been lost long ago
5) peta should go send her letters to all the tribal people that are still around or learn that in some civilization maybe there are tradition and not everybody wear a dead seal pup for fun
6) i reeeeaaaallly hope that GW will answer: "its synthetic adamantin fur you idiot, how do you think real fur can survive plasma shots? go help with real problems"

7) most important: poor tyranids, peta defends rabbits but feth them ugly insects cause they have no fur! shame on you peta

*edited a typo on wolfs

Ogres butcher and eat animals though and animals are real. Ogres enslave animals (which are real) to be ridden or even abuse them as walking fridges.
