Hi all!

I usually play historicals but I have recently been toying around with the idea of playing KoW. Since I dont play too much fantasy, I was hoping to be able to use my old WHFB army and not have to build too much new to get started. Unfortunately its a Skaven army. From what I have been able to find on line it looks like Mantic was playing with the idea of releasing a 'Ratkin' book/line a few years ago but it never happened. What happened? Am I out of luck? Do really have to start building something from scratch?

Thanks in advance,

Walt

You will still need the basic rulebook, but the complete army lists for the Ratkin are in the Uncharted Empires book, which also has several other factions based on Warhammer in it. Also the basic stats for any of the armies can be found here:

Hi and welcome to KoW.

Ratkin are a very nice and effective army with lots of options, your skaven models will have a nice home.

Note that there are some options that might not seem obvious at first for using some models.

For exemple Rat-ogres are Brutes in the ratkin list, but the option for the shooting Rat-ogres from the End times might seems to be missing, until you realize that you can do something like give a rat-ogre unit the diadem of dragon kind, (an artefact that can be equipped to any unit and that give it a breath attack).

Also, note that the Death Engine has several upgrades, giving options for several different skaven models.

Usually I recommand the following :

- Death Engine without upgrade
=> wheel

- Death Engine with bloody carnage upgrade
=> plague furnace

- Death Engine with Vile sorcery
=> Screaming bell

In short, if you have a specific model that you are not sure how to use in KoW, don't hesitate to ask for suggestions.

You'll find that Skaven are great in KOW. Ratkin are amongst the strongest lists - it's amazing what your army can get done when it doesn't blow up all the time

Seconded! KOW is extremely forgiving when it comes to modeling, especially if you decide to rebase your dudes onto multi-bases. But that's for later.

So far, the Ratkin have been one of the most effective armies against me.

But there was that one game where my Zombie Legion attacked his Slave Legion.... and the two huge units sat in the middle of the table for the entirety of the game, blocking both sides like an enormous living wall....

I suspect that in some parallel universe, those two units are there to this day...

Huge nerve values, wet handbags for attacks, yeah those will take a while to whittle each other down w/o external interference

It did not help that I had gotten lucky with a Surge roll, and managed to hit the Slaves in my round of the first turn... for seven turns, those two just sat there, like a huge, drippy sponge....

I can imagine all the other units on the table sitting there watching it for 3 turns, before turning to each other and saying "Well what are we supposed to do now?"

That's possibly the most peculiar thing about it. I really can't imagine a game of KoW which would last more than a turn or two before something would be flank-charging into that combat with gusto
