Greetings all! I am hoping to start up a 30k army, and was looking for some advice. I have had great luck here in the past, and you fine folk have also been able to point out a few battlescribe errors that got me on the right track previously. I'll try to keep this short and sweet, since I am asking for a lot. I can't decide between Night Lords or Alpha Legion. I have built two lists, that play to the fluff of each legion. I was hoping to see which one you all think I should start aspiring to build and what changes I could make to one or the other to make it better.

Night Lords- Terror Assault

Legion Praetor: Artificer Armor, Iron Halo, Jump Pack, Pair of Lightning Claws, Trophies of Judgement, and Cloaking Array.

Legion Apothecary with Jump Pack.

Contemptor Dreadnought with Twin Linked Lascannon and Heavy Flamer.

x3 10 man Terror Squads with Flamer, Bolters, Headsman with Artificer Armor and Power Fist (Note, due to points, one of these Headsman has a chainglaive).

10 Night Raptors with 2 meltaguns, 4 power swords and a Huntmaster with Artificer Armor and Power Sword.

Primaris Lightning Strike Fighter with Ground Tracking, 1 Kraken penetrator heavy missile, and 2 phospex bombs.

Sicaran Venator with Armored Ceramite, Dozer Blade, Heavy Bolter, Hunter Killer Missile, and Lascannon sponsons.

Konrad Kurze.

The idea is to put the primarch, praetor, and apothercary into the the raptors to try to create a death star type like unit. The terror squads infiltrate and try to hold objectives while the dread and heavy tank provide a fire support. The flier is there to try provide anti infantry support and a one shot chance on anything big like a spartan.

Alpha Legion- Coils of the Hydra.

Dynat.

3 Apothercaries (No upgrades)

Lernaen Terminator Squad (9 man squad) with 2 chain fists on regular dudes.

Iron Havoc Support Squad (8 man Squad) sergeant with artificer armor and all equipped with Lascannons.

15 man Legion Breacher Squad with meltabombs, 3 graviton guns, and sarge with Artificer Armor, Breaching Charge, Power Dagger, and Power Fist.

18 man Legion Tactical Squad with additional CCWs and sarge with artificer armor, power dagger, and power fist.

17 man Legion Tactical Squad with additional CCWs and sarge with artificer armor, power dagger, and power fist.

Alpharius.

This list is similar to the Night Lords one, but features infiltrate on all units due to the alpha legion special rule. Apothecary goes into each troops choice squad to provide survivability bonuses. Alpharius and Dynat can join the tactical squads so they get a +1 to BS skill with the signis making fury of the legion that much better. Havocs and Lernaen are already BS 5 and when combined with Alpharius' army wide preferred enemy, they should never miss. I am concerned about the lack of heavy and fast attack, but infiltrate should make up for the slow plodding nature, and the anti tank should be covered with the havocs, and the power fist sergeants.

Again, thanks for taking the time to read this, and thank you in advance for any ideas, or helping me decide which legion to go with!

Those big tactical/breacher squads are basically cannon fodder. Easily killed, really low dmg out put, hard to move on field, fury of the legion happens really rarely. Usually you will get charged before you can do it. On paper it does look nice, but in reality, not much. When I Started AL, I thought, oh boy, lets get 3x20 tacticals with apotecharies, they you see that this actually doesn't do very much on field, and most of the time just dies.

Iron havocs will be enemy priority number 1, and after they die, and they will die turn 1, you more or less have no AT.

How do you counter some phosphex rapiers/typhoon/vidnicators/medusas...enemy can easilly have al that in 2k. You get 1st turn, and kill 1 of those threaths with havocs, after which they die.

Smurfornot, thank you for the insight. So blobs, tempting they may be, are going to fall victim to the abundance of ap3 available. Are you suggesting that I throw veterans in rhinos and back them up with vehicles? Or would terminators alongside contemptors be better?

I always put stuff in rhinos. Vets in rhinos are good, since you can simply choose do you wanna inflitrate them or outflank with sniper. ANd multi melta on rhino is not bad investment for 15pts, this way after rhino unloads troops, it can't really be ignored, he can still blow up a lot of stuff with a bit of luck.

Also you get mobility, which is important for objectives. slogging 6'' across open space is just asking to get killed by some blast, and there really is a lot of them in 30k.

I am not really fan of terminators footsloging, you will either get charged or shoot at. I use spartan for mine, expensive, but gets them where I want, especially since it infiltrates. And laerns are kinda, we wanna shoot with volkites, but at same time, we are not that good in shooting, since volkites are not gonna do that much in the end, but if you just use them for cc, why pay for volkite. That's why I just use normal terminators, or normal terminators+chaplain instead of extra cost for laerns. They are not as good as those special 2w terminators some legion have...

My apologies for being all over the board here, but smurfornot got me thinking about phosphex bombs. I was unaware that quad mortars had the option to upgrade to that cannister. Would the following list be stronger?

Legion Praetor, tartaros armor, teleportation transponder, storm shield, and paragon blade.

Legion Centurion, cataphracti armor, chainfist, phosphex bombs, teleportation transponder, and siege breaker consul.

10 Legion terminators, tartaros armor, teleportation transponder, storm shields, and thunder hammers.

10 man breaches squad, 2 gravity guns, vexilla, sarge with artifice armor, power fist, melta bombs, and breaches charge. Dedicated transport land raider phobos with armored ceramite, dozer blade, extra armor, and multi melta. (2 identical units).

2 quad launcher support batteries, 3 guns each upgraded to phosphex.

Consul, quad guns, and breaches mounted in landraiders start on the board and chip away at infantry and vehicles. The Praetor and terminators deep strike in to clean up and have the ability to perform sweeping advances. The glaring issue I see is the lack of anti-air, and the comments online about bringing that many quad guns. Obviously this deviates from the 2 legions noted above and swings to imperial fists using pride of the Legion. Thoughts?

Are we talking Imperial Fists now? Tartaros can't take stormShields.
